Right?????  I'm glad that me and DH aren't the only ones who have no clue why he's dead.

What was with the blood on Decoursey's shirt at the end?  Was that from Antoin?  The miscarriage?  He murdered someone?  This show is all over the place.

The blood must have been from Anton’s shooting scene.  He wasn’t wearing the white shirt when he helped Siobhan to the hospital.  I don’t think he got it while getting dressed at home afterwards but I guess anything is possible.

  2. They have made DeCourcy so unlikeable this year.  How can it be that I like Jackie over him?

I do wonder if Jenny has been duped.  All things point to this.  I guess Maeve was able to easily spot someone she could find sympathy from.

After everything that Anton has done I actually felt bad that he took one to the head.  I was hoping he would be caught and put in jail for a long time but he seemed ready to surrender when the cop decided to be the judge and jury.

The last episode looks like it won't be a happy one.  With these crimes stories it never is.

  3. They have made Billy Ross seem pretty shady.  Maybe everyone from this town looks shady but he has had these weird looks in several scenes.

Cops planting evidence is pretty common on these shows.  There was a pretty serious version of it on The Wire, season 3, if I recall correctly.

I can understand why Mare may have stolen the drugs to plant on Carrie but why did she change the log?  Doing both things nailed her.

I think it is great that they have set this in a small town where everyone knows everyone else.  I think more towns are like this than the big cities where no one know anyone.  This is the kind of town I grew up in and we were only 45 minutes from Manhattan.

Cathy Ryan loses her own hair salon and her alternative is slinging drugs?

Why not get some kind of welfare?  Food stamps at least for the kids?

Why not go work for another place?  Even a minimum wage job at Supercuts with tips?

Does she have a steep mortgage or something?

Why not move in with parents at least temporarily?  Or aunts and uncles.  I thought the Ryans was a large extended family.

Maybe the point is, she's a criminal, participated in her husband's schemes and isn't interested in any other way.  I guess they're trying to show how glamorized crime is in Southie?

Or they're trying to force her arc together with the Braxton arc -- Grace, Anton, Decourcy, Siobhan, etc.  I don't know how likely Charlestown people were to mix with black people in the projects, though Cathy is only looking for supply.

It seems as though she (and her business) are ostracized given what went down with her husband.  So, while some form of welfare may be possible, getting a job in that town is probably not.  She had a legitimate business and tried to make a go of it after her husband was arrested but customers weren’t showing up.  There is nothing she can do about that.

  5. I thought this was another very good episode.  I like that there are several interesting storylines with the main one being with Jackie and Dee.

I don't know if Kelvin will survive the shooting but one would think this would be the last straw with Grace and Anton.  Anton is doing everything he can to destroy what she has worked so hard to build.  Friggin' kids...

I like that they have gone deeper into Jackie's past to give us some sense as to why he is such a jerk.  My vote is low self-esteem created by his parents.  Friggin' parents...

Cathy Ryan may have some undesirable traits but she is dealing with a very bad situation created by her now dead husband.  I hope she can find her way out of this for her kids' sake.

Definitely the best episode of the season. They finally gave the actors, especially Kevin Bacon, a lot of good material, and stuff is actually happening again. The best part of last season was the fraught but mutually beneficial partnership between Jackie and Decourcy, which seems like it is finally back (although you know Jackie is playing an angle) and will hopefully be a lot more fun than their bitter sniping.

Now Grace's willful ignorance of how awful her son is has almost gotten people killed, and she is crossing lines to bail him out of trouble. At this point I mostly feel bad for her younger son, who seems to be mostly just following his brother and desperately wants out.

It does seem as though at some point the younger son will be Anton's downfall.  He will never get past the killing of the young girl in her bedroom.

  7. Great episode.  Kevin Bacon carries this show.  There are a lot of other good characters and actors but every scene he is in is good, even the kitchen confession one.

Grace is heading for a rude awakening when she finds out what her sons are up to. Especially the son who doesn't even care at all about killing a kid, and can write her off as "meh, not my problem" and then talk about going to visit her parents with his mom in the next scene. I did laugh at her dropping off pamphlets in her sons room, that is some mom shit.

The show seems to be set in the early 90s given the clothes and hair. The style of the 80s isn't really gone but you can tell who is still holding onto that 80s hair and who is starting to move into the more 90s style.

Jackie's plan to mess with Decourcy by digging up dirt on him for his college days really backfired (ex girlfriends might not be the best place to get reliable unbiased information) but now he has a new angle. So how long will this back and fourth keep going?

It does seem like the younger brother is going to tell his mom about what’s going on and then she will have to decide what to do about the information.  My guess is that she will try to protect them (and herself).

Am I supposed to forget that Cathy Moriarty played Jenny Rohr's mother?  Ok.  I forgot...

Cathy Moriarty played the Ryan boys’ mother.  Catherine Wolf still plays Jenny’s mom.

  10. There is so much of this show that I do not like, but this episode is definitely in the top 3 for the series.  It is so much better when they concentrate on a single character or 2 and really dive in.

Both Griffin Dunne and Michael Angarano were amazing while tag-teaming on Nicky.  Poor Nicky has struggled his entire life.  Maybe his role as Uncle Nicky will provide him with some peace.  He also has Cassidy to thank for helping keep things together.

  11. To no one’s surprise, Wilford has re-claimed the throne.  The only remaining question is who is going to double cross him and hand the reigns back to Melanie.  I say Alex, with Ruth’s help. I was thinking it could be Audrey but I think she has fully swallowed the kool-aid.

As to why Layton would hide the sabotage, he has no proof that it was sabotage. Ben and Javi are the only ones who could attest to it

And Boki who actually found it, not that anyone would believe him either although he is probably the least biased of the group.

Wouldn't you think that if these are the last people on Earth they shouldn't be trying so hard to kill each other?

That's the question Till posed to the pastor.  I guess it shows that people live in their own microcosm and changing their behavior is difficult to do.  There is always a struggle for power even when winning just means you hang out in a different enclosed space on a train.

Alex foolishly told LJ that she has deeper feelings for Melanie than she thought she would and to please not tell that to anyone. LJ will be knocking on Wilford’s door in 3....2.....1

That's what I thought too.  Big mistake.

  15. I guess I am in the minority but I am enjoying this season more than last.  I prefer watching each of the characters deal with the new reality and playing off each other.  I thought the scenes with Melanie and Alex were great.  I like seeing Ruth navigate the space between her devotion to Mr W and her role on Snowpiercer.  This won’t go down as a top-notch written drama but the character interactions have been good enough to keep me interested.

  16. It seems pretty obvious what's going to happen.  The question is how it is handled and how people react.

The first episode showed how immature and foolish HS boys are, but we all knew that already.

  17. Meh. Could the storyline be more cookie cutter?  “Everything in my life is not what I thought it was.” “All the facts leading up to the murder are true and I saw her the night she was murdered but I didn’t do it.”

    Come on.

I gasped when she threw the doll away.  She must know twenty little girls who would have loved it.  I'd like to see her show just a tiny bit of kindness toward someone, she never even apologized for swearing at her chess teacher.

She didn’t really even know what she was saying.  In the next scene in the bathroom she asked Jolene what that meant.

  19. Despite Randall being Randall, I thought the present day scenes were good.  They looped in COVID (just to make it realistic) and the Kevin storyline with Madison was well done.  Some how I even enjoyed the scenes with Kate and Toby.  However, if they couldn't find 2 hours of non-flashback material they should have had a 1 hour return instead of 2.  Not only did the scenes from 40 years ago break up the momentum of the other storylines, they covered stuff we have scene over and over again.  Can they please just let it go?

On a side note, we had also seen the "Rebecca is confused in the Asian restaurant" scene before.  Was that a flash forward when they showed it the first time? It had to have been since the restaurant workers would have been wearing masks if it was filmed today.

But we cannot say for sure that she did not know that George was going to kidnap her son and get ransom money, or that she didn't want to run away with him. We can say pretty much for sure there was a conspiracy to ransom Charlie to cover the church's debts, but nothing about that makes it impossible or even improbable that George hadn't brought Emily into the kidnapping plot and that she helped out in order to run away with him.

Assuming what Emily said on the stand was the truth, why would she have had to be on the phone with George to allow the kidnappers to take Charlie?  I guess we can say everything she said was a lie but if her testimony about that night was true then I would conclude she had no knowledge of the plot.

That was revealed in an earlier episode, I don’t remember when. They showed her talking on the phone and laughing. I think she was seen by a neighbor.

I am not sure that was the same night as the kidnapping.  I am sure there was more than one phone conversation especially since the husband was never home.

Meanwhile, I noted in the thread for the previous episode that the church was turning out to be an irrelevant sideshow, and I stand by that. In all honesty, Tatiana Maslany’s role could have been excised in its entirety without any problem, and it really hurts me to say that. She was completely wasted.

How was the church an irrelevant sideshow when it was the sole reason for the kidnapping?  The church needed money, George discovered through Emily that her father-in-law was rich, and, thus, a plot to get the 100k via the ransom money was hatched.  Yes, some of the Sister Alice stuff was "extra" but it painted a picture of the church infrastructure and how it was a money making enterprise that was failing.
