Young kids (and adults) see themselves of extensions of their parents. So if their parent is bad, they think they are somehow bad too. There's plenty of time when they're older to find out what a creep their dad is. Hopefully then they'll be able to separate who they are from who their dad is.

Even the oldest are far too young to know the real allegations and the reality of the conviction.  I said yesterday in response to the idea that the kids should know the truth that it was far too heavy a burden and I hope a genuinely loving, caring adult has merely explained to them that dad has broken some rules/laws and has to spend some time in jail as his punishment for doing so.   Sufficiently sums up the truth of the situation without doing damage to the kids who are old enough to need an explanation.

I think it's at least possible that the oldest Ms have already heard the truth from someone. The question is whether or not they believe it, or are believing their mother.

Whatever the kids have been told, I hope it came from a loving adult who has their genuine best interest at heart and knew enough to explain that dad has hurt some people and broken some laws and needs to spend some time in jail as punishment.  I don't think any of their children are old enough yet to handle the full and unvarnished truth about what he's done.   That would be a heavy burden for an adolescent heading for puberty and the teen years to even begin to wrap their brain around.

  3. I have a niggling anxiety from all of the mentions of the sentence being more than what those who know about these matters in federal court, and with this judge particularly, anticipated.  At the state court level where I am that can indicate an outlier situation where the case gets remanded by a higher court for sentencing reconsideration.

I'm comforting myself that the sentence nowhere exceeds the guidelines and the Judge has ample evidence to support the sentence.  I have absolutely no tolerance for the idea that a predator gets even a millimeter of satisfaction of having so much as a few seconds of a sentence reduced.  Hopefully this smugly arrogant narcissist settles in and decides he can put something over on those in charge of his oversight and lands himself in a spot (or twelve) of trouble and lengthens his stint in the FBOP.

I have never gotten the impression that Josh believes in anything but himself.  He used his parent's religious beliefs as a means to an end.  His family and Anna may believe that Josh is being persecuted for being the "correct" type of Christian, but he never has.  Josh believes he is entitled to do whatever he wants because he is Josh.  JB and Michelle did nothing to disabuse of this notion.  He was allowed to continue failing up from being on TV to getting a wife to service him to that job at the FRC.

Apple didn't fall far from the tree in that case.   JB's whole schtick is ultimately not about faith or adherence to the teachings of Christ.   It's simply the means by which JB can bend as many of those around him to what he wants and desires.   Luckily it seems his wants and desires are different from Josh's, but are also repugnant in many ways.

She will be 34 next month (approximately 46 when he gets out). She could still possibly have a few more children, but would she want to start over with a baby after dealing with teenagers for the past 12 years. Also, if he’s a sex offender, could they be on her if she allows him back into the house with minor children.

Isn't it about God's will rather than what she wants?

Just trying to comprehend what they've been spouting to the unwashed masses all these years.

I’m guessing 14 years. I would be pleased with that. And no statement from Josh. He has to maintain his innocence, and presumably someone on his defense team has warned him to keep his mouth shut.

The mindset of predators doesn't generally lend itself to submitting to the reality that others know more/know better and following recommendations.   Is he currently operating from the position of scared out of his wits, or angry that he listened pretrial and in the trial phase when the idiots around him didn't do their jobs?

Personally I'm very happy to hear he has what seems to be a paper with prepared statement in hand while he's demonstrating a relaxed and jovial attitude in the courtroom.   At the end of the day no matter how brilliantly his team may have prepared remarks for him in an attempt to mitigate the length of any sentence and/or to shine up his image for appeal, Josh alone is in control of what comes out of his mouth when it's his turn to speak.

Please let him speak from the depths of his soul in front of God and everybody.   Let him shape his destiny with his own filthy hands.

I got the super fast, super nice forensic laptops I've been begging for the last two years. I got to purchase off government contract, which is a HUGE deal, so yes, I'm happy.  And now I'm sucking Cheeto dust off my fingers and enjoying a diet coke and schadenfreude about Josh.  The points the prosecution has lost to the defense are not that big.  The pattern of behavior and S/M content is. It allows the Judge to say that Josh is a danger as proven by his past behavior and content downloaded.  I still think anything more than 10 years is a gift.  I've never seen the points add up to years. I think Judges just get a number in their head and go with it.

Nice to hear that someone wearing a white hat in these types of cases is working with a lot of firepower and will bring it to bear against some of the worst humanity offers.

The problem with that statement, in THIS case, is that prosecution can turn around and say "do any of your in life, real sister victims' want to make a statement?"  They would never do it, but it's not like Josh has all KINDS of VICTIMS.

That feels like such an opportunity for a satisfying takedown -- until I remember what it would be asking of the actual victims.   Even if any of them had the grace and courage to step up and do it, I'm too much of a coward and don't have the stomach to watch it happen.

My totally armchair guess for a while has been he'll get 15 years. That is not based on any of the guidelines used for sentencing. But I definitely don't think he's slithering out of there with only the minimum 5.

I don't believe he'll get the minimum either.   I will gratefully take every millisecond that lousy excuse for a human is sentenced to and I will greedily lust after more with the gluttonous appetite of the eldest Duggar spawn.

That reporter on Twitter has good details on the objections. More helpful than anything The Sun has written

Apparently the judge overruled the defense's objection to the enhancements regarding prior acts and the content of the material he had downloaded. The defense also tried to claim the victims of the CSAM are not specifically his victims and the judge overruled that one too. He did sustain the defense's objection concerning Josh knowingly distributing.

The 2 objections the judge shutdown are good signs for the prospective sentence.

And another issue I've not seen much discussion on:  Duggar's download timeframe.  I've had defense attorneys say "it was only over a period of two years, following his divorce, that Mr. Scumbag engaged in this sad behavior".

Josh's download period was over a couple of days, if I'm not mistaken?  Now, he could have just been getting started.  He might have engaged in downloading for years if not caught.  But there is a discussion about belonging to a CP community, i.e. interacting with pervs online in groups, etc.  And that engagement takes into consideration how long you've been downloading.

I personally think one day is enough.  But it's something to consider, that the Judge might apply to the sentence in a deductive way.

If the duration of time he is proven to actively been downloading can be used as a mitigating factor, can the bifurcation of the hard drive in order to evade the monitoring software be used to demonstrate he was setting up a longer-term plan to go forward also?

I don't know what the situation was prior to 2018. But, as of 2018, and again now in 2022, the current guidelines at the official federal website for the Bureau of Prisons say nothing about the nature/type of crimes, only the length of the sentence, and state that these guidelines apply to all inmates. The only exclusions are for people serving life sentences and people serving sentences of less than one year.

These are federal guidelines, not state guidelines. It's extremely possible that Arkansas, for instance, does not allow for time off for good behavior for anyone convicted of a CSAM crime.

He was tried federally, so Arkansas laws do not apply regarding his sentencing, only the federal ones.

  12. I like JoJo, but for me she's misplaced in her role on the judging panel.  I find it particularly annoying she's the (overly) dominant voice on the panel -- Twitch Boss is right there for Pete's sake!  I wouldn't bat an eye watching her give tips and commentary to 15 and unders at a dance convention or at a dance studio, but sorry, she does not yet have the gravitas or experience to sit on a panel like this and offer up her opinions IMO.  I also do not enjoy when the bulk of the focus is on the judging panel -- I'm here to watch the dancers.   Just because you've picked up the cast off WOD stage, don't model the show after that one, thank you very much.

Montage the auditions of dancers with the most solid chops, so back to normal.   Didn't find much to enjoy in the "featured" auditions and backstories.

Wonder what song the ballroom couple actually danced to that the show couldn't, or wouldn't, get the music clearance for?

Scott going on to Khloe about how difficult a time Travis will have with Kourtney was a hoot!

Agreed.   Although I don't know that he necessarily was incorrect.

Scott's problems are publicly acknowledged, including by himself.   Kourtney's problems may be of a different variety, but still problematic, particularly if stubbornly and deliberately unrecognized.

  14. I thought the nonstop, in your face, graphic PDA was beyond ridiculous -- until I heard him babytalking her in response to what he wanted to drink and wouldn't even express an independent opinion as to a beverage.

These two deserve each other.   Each of them should keep guzzling the poison cup of revenge, hoping it takes out their former partners.  At least this family knows the value of a great prenup by this point.   Just a shame their kids have a front row seat to this, heaven only knows what kind of marks this will leave.

I call it like I see it. To me Derick is the same asshole he was before JB stopped liking him. He is not a hero in my eyes. IMO, Jill went from a temperamental asshole father to a temperamental asshole husband.

He may very well be a miserable jerk.   That doesn't however mean that each and every scrap of info at all adjacent to him must be negative and picked apart to reinforce the fact he's an asshole.   After all, we don't know, he very well could be a conscientious recycler and might not kick the dog.    It won't wipe away the legitimate assholery, which will no doubt demonstrate itself without any help from anyone.

Or just unfortunate overlap. It's pretty common for graduations to collide with Mother's Day, I remember being at Syracuse for my brother's college graduation and it was Mother's Day weekend.

State universities here have done that when it falls after finals conclude -- including some disciplines having their ceremonies on Mother's Day itself because there are simply too many colleges to have all on Saturday.

ETA  My younger DD actually graduated this past Saturday.  She chose not to walk so I have no idea if some of the colleges at her university were walking Sunday or not.
