I am confused as to why Trig and Imani are in Chicago trying to get Jake. Kankakee is a very affluent Chicago suburb. Also, if they can afford to have a home in Kankakee, they can afford to have a better home than they do in Chicago.

I don't know about Kankakee being affluent. They could have stayed in Kankakee and fought for custody from there. Kankakee is a hour, hour and a half tops from the Southside.

Did you catch the documentary about Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher? I think it’s on HBO.  Carrie is on a treadmill giving interview and it appears she’s  high or drunk. She said she was in good shape. I wonder about that.

I read a article on her last days (Carrie) and talk about sad. May her and her Mom rest in peace.

Queena, I know this isn't the book recommendation thread, but have you ever read City of Shadows by Ariana Franklin? It sounds right up your alley, with the Russian history. It's a great historical novel of suspense, in any case.

Thank you! I'm adding it to Amazon now.

Oh my gods, y'all - Dixie Carter spent 18 pages of her book lecturing in meticulous detail how people should groom and dress themselves:  two paragraphs for men, two pages for babies (yes, babies) and children, and the rest for women.  Yep, 15 pages of specific instructions on how to bathe, brush our teeth, and dress.

I'll give her points for self awareness: after she spent two paragraphs declaring babies should be dressed only in white, she wrote:  "Yes, a pterodactyl flew through the centuries into my window and pecked out these last paragraphs".

But then I'll deduct a few, because, I shit you not, on the next page she criticized the do and don't type of articles on celebrity fashion, asking, "Why do we need the catty comments?"

I'm not even halfway through the book, but I'm going to have to just start skimming for tidbits about the show.  Because, rest her soul, this woman was batshit crazy.

😂 I didn't finish the book. I didn't want to ruin DW, I would have never been able to look at her the way.

One of the best Julia Sugarbaker rants is this one.

It has been the men who have done the law making and the money making and the most of the mischief making! So if the world isn't quite what you had in mind you have only yourselves to thank!!

I recall reading that Linda had to promise a singing opportunity for Dixie each time "Julia" had to rail away about a liberal cause (since Dixie did not share those beliefs). I only sat through her singing one time. After that ear shattering experience, I knew I had to hit the mute button.

I remember that wonderful actor who played the eccentric wealthy client (who gave Anthony some pieces from Clue). Loved that fellow.

I just watched the episode with the preacher who doesn't believe that women should be ministers. Julia started singing and my son turned the TV off. I wasn't upset.

I don't think I've ever met anyone who ever mentioned that book. But I loved it when I was around 12. Never forgot it, it was very haunting. I tracked down a copy not long ago and re-read it. My biggest surprise was that I thought it would be a bleak and grim reread, which is why it took me so long to even decide to re-read it. But, to my surprise, reading it as an adult, there is a clear tone of hopefulness and optimism throughout, and definitely at the end, despite the subject matter! And still an excellent read, so poignant, especially in the acknowledgements where she thanked the taxi driver who shared his father's life story.

I've always been a big reader. So I don't have a specific book that changed my life or turned me on to reading. That said, here are some impactful books I read in my teens--books that I loved, read over and over, and enjoyed making up day dreams about story plot continuations:

    Term Paper by Ann Rinaldi

The Truth Trap by Frances Miller

Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones

Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell

    April Morning by Howard Fast

    Perdita by Isabelle Holland

I've met very few people who have read it. It started a long love affair with pre revolutionary Russia. The Unsolved Mysteries episode on the Anna Anderson only deepened my love for Russian history.

I think that my  most life changing book is Flowers in the Attic. I remember my Mama reading it and it just fascinated me that kids were locked away. It was the first adult book that I read.

The second book would be Where the Sidewalk Ends. It was the first long book that I read at 7.

If she adopted a teenager, that makes more sense to me.

That seemed very thrown much thrown together at the end - by the way, I have a new heir now! And I know I was pushing you to get married and give birth, but you looked unhappy talking to that one man, so never mind!

I think they could have used at least six episodes. We barely got to see Madam Walker actually enjoying her newfound wealth.

I guess the idea was just that she tinkered with the basic formula to give it a better smell?

In real life, they were both using an old formula (petroleum jelly and sulfur) that had been around for ages. It seems kind of unfair that the miniseries presents it as Madam Walker "stealing" something from a rival.

I haven't watched the last episode yet, but my biggest gripe so far is the Addie Munroe character. I realize this is a fictionalized account, and that she's probably a mixture of Mrs. Walker's competitors, but I just don't think they really needed this 'nemesis' character. Especially since I'm sure, as a black woman trying to grow a business at the turn of the century, she had enough struggles, so they didn't need to invent any.

Love the production design: costumes, wigs, sets. Casting is good, with Haddish as a weak spot; but she did fine in general.

Definitely going to check out the book this is based on.

(Also, I thought this would be in the Specials forum since it's a one-time mini-series.)

In the beginning, Madam took the labels off of Annie Malone's products. Malone was Madam's teacher at one point.

I really hated the way that Annie Malone was portrayed. The lady was darker skin, and most likely had 4c hair.

Of course I’ve heard of a teen hating someone, but an adult hating a teen?  No, that’s extremely messed up.  They said Hillary hated Garrett.

There's been quite a few teens I didn't like. I won't say that I hate them, but dislike? Most certainly. I probably would hate them if they called me the N word or used racist rethoric towards me.

Linda Bloodworth is an excellent writer for mature women so let's hope she can get another series with such females. I understand she had another one ready to go but that creep Les Moonves wasn't interested.

That's surprising re: Dixie Carter's book. But then, Dixie was not at all like "Julia" so maybe it shouldn't be.

I didn't know that she wasn't Julia. Her and Kelsey Grammer do very good jobs at saying things that they may not agree with.

There's supposed to be a DW reboot, but nothing else has been said.

"The Rowdy Girls" is another one where I have to just accept that the situation setting the stage for hilarious hijinks would never have actually happened to begin with:  When Suzanne showed up covered in black make-up, Julia would have hog tied her and shoved her in a closet rather than just warning her not to get on stage with them, not to mention letting her go out there with Anthony.  The talent show was a competition (and fundraiser of some sort?) among design firms, so both acts represent Sugarbaker's; Julia wouldn't want the bad publicity of one of the firm's partners going on stage in blackface (especially after she promised the local NAACP chapter it wouldn't happen)!

"Suzanne, Dustin Hoffman would never play Martin Luther King; that part would go to a black actor."
    "Well, I think that's racist."

I also watched the episode where Mary Jo pretends - to impress her snooty classmate Belva - the grand mansion they're decorating is her home, a home to which Anthony crawls after escaping Suzanne's house where he's about to be injected with collagen, and the homeowners come home a day early to find this motley crew.  Julia's explanation cracks me up:  "I'm terribly sorry.  Against billion to one odds, I seem to have three friends who have lost their minds at the exact same time."

I love in the episode with Charlene's baby shower when she describes running into people who haven't seen her since the wedding:  "I have never seen so many people mentally counting to nine."

In case anyone doesn't know/remember this little bit of DW trivia:  Jean Smart found out she was pregnant while filming the episode in which Charlene and Bill get married, and thought, "Boy, they married her off just in time."

Some how, and I don't know how, but Suzanne in Black face wasn't that offensive, not at all. I don't know if it's because Delta Burke meant no harm, and I don't think that Suzanne would have meant harm.

I bought Dixie Carter's book and I was so disappointed to find lessons on dieting and other things. She came off judgemental.

Linda Bloodworth needs another series. Stat!

I just wonder what kind of adult doesn't "get along" with kids?  The fact that Garrett didn't like him and vice versa told me a lot.  I know that sometimes kids don't like having a new person in their mom's life, but something doesn't smell right with this scenario.  Why didn't Hillary like Garrett?

The fact that they broke up because of this animosity tells me a lot about an adult who can't get along with a kid.  There is more to that story.

Am I the only person on here who thinks Hillary was guilty?  Everyone I talk to in "real life" thinks he did it.

You've never heard of a teen hating someone who is their mom's boyfriend? Combine it with the teasing that he endured because his mom was dating a Black man and I can see why they didn't get along.

It is nice to see Joe Biden on MJ this morning.  I like his talking points and him.  He always seems to be squinting. It makes him look as if he is uncomfortable or in pain.  I wonder if it would help if he wore glasses.

I was thinking the same thing as Joe Biden is just a likable person. I won't pull a Lindsay Graham 1.0 and cry, but 8 agree with everything Lindsay Graham 1.0 said.

I'm not sure what Lindsay Graham 2.0 thinks.

Is it just me or did Joe say that liberal lawyers weren't required to be as smart as conservative lawyers?

Ok, my pop culture IQ sucks. In the new series episode where they are considering selling the apartment and Ira finds the stinky cheese, who is the "celebrity" or who are they supposed to be?

I thought that I was the only person who had no idea a who he was.

  16. What R. Kelly did at Kenwood wasn't a secret. Hell, I met him in music class. I remember when Tia (Tiffany) told me about her man R. Kelly. You do the crime you do the time. Just leave Aaliyah out of this. She's gone. There should be enough to lock him up without.

    R. Kelly was wrong, but there should never be a price on protecting your children. Never!

Oh my God, I hate Mabel!  She pretty much ruins the show for me.  And it worries me that it might be a fairly accurate description of college kids her age, from my experience and from what I've read/seen.

In that episode in which Paul spoke to Mabel's film class -- those students were so rude, nasty and obnoxious to him, and so convinced that they had the moral high ground giving them the right to behave horribly.  It was very difficult to continue suffering through these episodes.

I feel like the show/writers have lost everything that gave the original its humor and charm.

She's not in a lot of them.

Having recently raised a teen, she's exactly like the teens of today. Exactly.

Joe and Mika are off.  Elyse and Jonathan Lemire are hosting today with Yasmin from the early morning show.

The show opened with testimony by Dr. Fiona Hill.  The NY Times reports that former NS Advisor John Bolton asked the president to release aid.

Elyse says the budget process was politicized. It was 84 days of confusion according to the New York Times.  Eddie Glaude says there was wrongdoing.

The panel speculated about what will happen in a Senate trial.

So this is basically the same show from two weeks ago with Elyse and Jonathan Lemire playing Mika and Joe?

Were they off last week? I don't understand why they aren't working today, I had my morning Joe waiting for Joe to express Faux outrage and taunt Trump.

    Maybe tomorrow
