  1. I know the thread is titled Afterbuzz Show. I often see you guys complaining about what Jake and others say, so I was adding my opinion about why I think it's understandable. Strictly Come Dancing is from England, where ballroom dancing is far more popular than contemporary/jazz dancing so like the opposite of this country. It doesn't translate directly, imo. And yes you're entitled to get annoyed, I was just trying to add a different perspective. I would be very happy to not have them on the show either, trust me. Elated. And you don't have to be sorry for your opinion, but should maybe remember that that's what it is and not a fact. I can tell you that the contemporary and jazz done on this show is a literal disgrace, and I try not to be that openly negative because I enjoy the show for what it is, but I will put it out there when I see this kind of attitude. And I also find it like endlessly hilarious how dwts fans alway, like without fail, talk about ARM extensions in contemporary like that kills me. Probably because the judges like always mention it in their 'critiques' for no discernible reason.
  2. No CAI was talking 100 percent out of her ass. Idk what the fascination with Fosse is here but he is one (his own) very specific style of jazz. He is not the creator. Musical theater was not the birthplace of jazz. The only thing I can think of is if she is a former competition kid or something. This is how it goes: ballet and tap starting at 2/3-->jazz and musical theater at like 5-->'lyrical' (which is ballet set to an interpretation of of the LYRICS, tells a story) at like 6/7-->contemporary (can be similar to 'lyrical' but usually more abstract) a few years later when they can handle it. Contemporary is new to THESE KIDS in this comp circuit progression, as of maybe like 10/15 years ago at the max.
  3. Since they deleted my post again I'm going to go ahead and reiterate that the post from the previous page saying Casey is dating Makenzie is not in any way shape or form true or anything that would actually ever happen and I won't go farther into it because they'd probably delete my post again. But SYTYCD alumni have been killing it lately with --Amy as Peter Pan --Melanie in Fiddler --Jacque danced at the Governor's Ball with Maks from dancing with the stars --Ricky joined shaping sound --Cat and Allison+tWitch pregnant, Witney engaged, Lindsay just married --Travis and Tessandra won emmys
  4. I don't think Allison can be blamed for the bad ratings. The way people watch TV is changing, in 10 years I doubt it will even be recognizable. Ratings will go down, there's nothing they can do about it, young people don't watch live TV and the older people who do are going to die (eventually). I can't blame the panel for being honest about how they feel. They are not ballroom dancers. Ballroom dance exists in a different sphere from most professional dancers in America/LA. The show is trying to make up for that, with their recent hiring practices and bad attempts at anything outside the ballroom umbrella. I think a more appropriate complaint if we don't like those comments from afterbuzz hosts would be to get people who are ballroom dancers/care about ballroom dance. Not to force the contemporary dancers to care. I mean this is the whole point though. There are 9s and 10s given CONSTANTLY to really bad contemporaries and jazzes that are often not even recognizable as the genre they are pretending to be. If they can do that, why can't they do the same to the cha chas? Is where Jake is coming from, as a contemporary dancer watching people do a terrible job to his genre and get nothing but rave reviews.
  5. This has got to mean they're canceling sytycd.
  6. Freestyle is a ballroom competition category that has nothing to do with jazz and contemporary. Contemporary and jazz have similarities and crossovers but jazz is a very broad style--pop jazz is what Sharna and Nick's thing was going for (what you see in most music videos). Contemporary is a newer style, it is a combination of ballet/modern/jazz. Neither of them is done remotely correctly on this show so you won't get a good idea. sytycd does a little better job, if you're interested this is a pretty pure jazz routine--https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hp8k0Rizzc&list=PL2uLxqwq8yw6o1f6B3L1L2BAU-Fufgpwg&index=65 and this is a pretty pure contemporary routine--https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUNVCqUo0dY You could also read the wikipedia articles for some summaries :) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jazz_dance https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_dance https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contemporary_dance
  7. Alright I have come around a bit on the Bindi contemporary. I realized that the hopping part was probably part of the storytelling of the dance, I guess (since he like took her hand and she followed him) it was about their 'adventures' they had when she was little? I will choose to believe that. The song did kind of jar me a little in parts like 'you belong to me' and 'every vow you break.' I think she performed it beautifully and that she has a lovely movement quality as well and really danced it which is something that often doesn't happen with contemporaries on this show.
  8. Nope literally hated the choreo in Bindi's contemporary (like even worse than usual--- the hopping part?! and I'm so tired of all the arm dancing, I understand we can't dance with our legs and feet because we aren't trained but I'm done with it), but her facial expressions and acting/emoting were amazing, she is very talented in my opinion!
  9. I am loathe to admit this but I thought Emma's choreography in that contemporary was actually good. Like not great or anything, but good and I am THOROUGHLY impressed and I thought Hayes did about half as good as Riker did in his contemporary, which is a huge compliment and not something I ever wanted to say about Hayes Grier.
  10. yeah no apostrophe. It's been Stephen tWitch Boss since he was first on SYTYCD back in like 2008. https://twitter.com/official_tWitch
  11. I am so happy for them. And BW it's supposed to be tWitch << like that but I always just write Twitch lol.
  12. It's the 'most memorable year' week they have to exploit something in their life, I'm fine with her exploiting you know... what probably WAS the most formative year in her 17 years of living......... I really like Bindi so even though I'm 95 percent sure I'm not going to like Derek's choreography, 100 percent sure I'm not going to like the 'best dance ever choreographed in the history of dance' comments that are certainly coming from judges and fans of the show, I'm happy for Bindi she gets to have this experience for herself and her family and I'm excited to see how it turns out. Like someone else said upthread, I was sad when Steve Irwin died too hahaha. She may annoy some people (not me) but she seems to me a genuine, sweet young woman.
  13. Can anyone tell me if there's two dances this week (two nights) or one? I feel like one, but I saw on Witney's instagram something about her memorable year as well as Carlos's (both 2012) so I thought maybe they're doing two, one for each, like they did the hometown episode? I mean because I can't imagine they'd want to do it for the pros when probably for three of them it's the year they got their big break and they don't seem to want to acknowledge sytycd on the show.
  14. I just want to add that I really do love Allison as a whole but I have seen contemporary dancers do better quicksteps (and much better) on sytycd, and they were learning in a week while she's had several years now to train in this style to be on this show... it's just a little frustrating.
  15. I just watch on youtube so I didn't catch the judging, and while Alfonso annoys me sometimes too I really love when a guest judge gives actual critiques. That's what the judges are there for. But since I didn't actually see it there is a good chance I would still find him annoying idk. -Carlos and Witney: this was cute. Reminded me a lot in tone, choreography, music, and even set (the bench/sofa) of her jazz with Alfonso. I think compared to the other jazz on this show Witney does a pretty good job. Strongly dislike those moments of hold these pros always put into their jazzes and contemporaries though. I don't think the theme gave Carlos too much room to show off which is too bad because I think he could have in this style. But that's not his or Witney's fault. -Paula and Louis: omg I'm sorry I loved EVERYTHING about this. Don't think I saw too much (any?) samba but this was hilarious/adorable. Loved the troupe addition in this, loved the band, loved the set and costumes and lighting, and I actually thought Paula's performance was quite good (not the dancing though obvs). -Tamar and Val: could not love her any more, could not love her making fun of Val's macho shit any more and using the word sexist. I think she's one of the best dancers this season but this felt a little clunky to me and her performance seemed a little off. -Alexa and Mark: this is a contemporary, like 100 percent. I wish they would do this instead of what they think is contemporary. The choreography wasn't outright bad for once but it was definitely unoriginal, to me it seems like he is picking up stylistic tics and accents that he's seen in other places with professional contemporary choreographers. To be specific I saw a ton of this in there https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVUZ2AZRmD0&list=PL2uLxqwq8yw6o1f6B3L1L2BAU-Fufgpwg&index=28 But I think that's a good thing haha. Mark's contemporaries can sometimes be really okay, much better than Derek's. -Andy and Allison: I really love how eager he seems. He seems like a nice guy. Not danced well by either of them but I enjoyed his performance. -Gary and Anna: um why didn't they make him Lurch? -Alek and Lindsay: wow I thought this was so good! He really impressed me. -Bindi and Derek: yes she struggled but who wouldn't with only two days to rehearse? I still think she was quite good in places. I don't think it deserved a 32 though. She has a lot of stage presence and charisma in my opinion. -Nick and Sharna: ok I thought this was great. Best dancing by a celeb in the episode imo (but I'm not a ballroom expert by any means so this is just to my untrained eye). I thought he did so well and the performance by both of them was really beautiful as well. -Hayes and Emma: the jive part was terrible, even I could see that.
  16. I think all of this comes from trying to get the pros (Derek, Val, Tony) to choreograph outside of their expertise. They don't know what they're doing, and when they can resort to copying the source material especially when given music which is associated with a famous choreography, they'll do it.
  17. I wondered about this for Derek and Nastia's jazz, which was the entire dance just pulled from the movie exactly as it was. I always wondered how they got away with that?
  18. I don't think the song clearance thing is for drama. That happens on sytycd too, I've seen the choreographers and dancers say many times that sometimes songs don't cleared until the night before the show or they get rejected and they have to make an entire new routine in that short amount of time or use music that doesn't fit.
  19. Ok but to say something positive, I thought that Derek and Bindi, Mark and Alexa (these two were my favorite of the night by far), and Tamar and Val had really great dances that made me remember why I really enjoy this show sometimes.
  20. I thought Allison's contemporary was really terrible. She is a great contemporary dancer but it is confusing to me why people assume that that translates to contemporary choreographer as well. She was able to choreograph a good contemporary (and good, nothing more) for Riker because he was actually a natural dancer and obviously picked it up well. Not the same for Andy, and that dance was plain awful, in terms of dancing AND choreography.
  21. I agree with you that I wish they wouldn't bastardize the ballroom and latin dances, but they already bastardize everything else so it's not really surprising to me. What they do to the ballroom dances does not compare to what they do to the dances outside of the ballroom genre.
  22. I agree, if they are rigging it for him to win they're doing a bad job lol. I think they want him to stay around to the end but I don't think they care so much if he actually wins or not.
  23. Jenna is a good example of that. She competed and won high level awards in both youth ballroom competitions with her partner Landon and also on the mainly contemp/jazz circuit at national competitions like The Dance Awards with contemporary. All the other Vibe girls that have come onto these shows seem to have been more focused on one than the other but she did both. Lindsay Witney and Brittany more focused on ballroom, Brooklyn and Tanisha on contemporary and jazz.
  24. Honestly if that is the case then I have nothing to do but apologize for severely misunderstanding....... so if so original poster I'm really sorry!
  25. Wait are you seriously saying there is not technique to jazz. Please read this, this is just the beginning..... https://twitter.com/ChristinaRicucc/status/644261963246137344 I will really never understand this attitude some fans of this show have that the only type of dance that has technique is ballroom. It's actually backward, quite frankly. It's not done correctly on dwts and it's not a fair representation, which is why I wish they would just leave it out. Because of these kinds of comments. I mean you really, seriously think every single thing you listed, bent knees foot placement hunched back, are not critiqued in jazz dancing as well? When critiqued by people qualified to do so? Please watch the first dance in this video and tell me again that jazz doesn't have rules? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Y1CIPtRxYo
