  1. It was too long, should have probably just been an hour or a little longer. The music business, and that era in particular, is always going to be a draw for me, so there's enough there for me to keep watching. It helps that the acting was pretty terrific all the way around.

One thing that pulled me out of the story was the casting of Peter Grant, whose whole persona was predicated on his hulking size (6′ 5″, 300 lbs) that he used to great intimidation. That was a serious misstep in casting.

  2. I was rooting for Sarah, but blanking on who John Paul Jones was on that Daily Double just killed her. Poor Niki said more than she ever hoped to with that story about her mother.

As for Sam? It was quite the couple weeks for him, he got to express his love for his idol, win a boatload of money and play with himself, all on national TV.

  3. It might have taken to the morning of the Oscar nominations, but I think we finally might have favorites in all of the acting categories (Leo, Larson, Sly & Vikander), although Leo is probably the only heavy one.

With two actors getting nominated and editing nomination, Spotlight comes out of this morning looking in pretty good shape.

The biggest surprise snub is Ridley Scott. Otherwise, I don't think there's too many big surprises, Carol not getting in to Picture/Director will no doubt get some mention, but it had been trending that way.

Mad Max: Fury Road did about as well as expected right down to missing out on Actress/Screenplay.

Still, the story of the morning is the showing by The Revenant.  I knew it would probably end up with 7-8 nominations, but 12? I didn't see that one coming at all.

  4. The voting for nominations ended on Friday so the effect these have on the Oscars should be limited. I don't think it will have any effect on the Best Picture race, although both winners tonight will be in that lineup for the Oscars. I do think people may be underestimating the chances of The Martian to take the top prize, even if it didn't get a Cast nod at the SAGs. Spotlight would seem to remain a pretty weak favorite. As for the acting awards, Leo seems damn near a sure thing at this point, Larson is probably a slight favorite over Ronan, but that could still go either way. If someone forced me to pick a Supporting Actor favorite it would be Rylance, but he's a weak favorite at best. I will say this. If Stallone can pull off the nomination he'll become the favorite for me. Supporting Actress is even more up in the air, so much to the point that I actually think Winslet has as good a chance of not being nominated as she does of winning.

Yeah, this is the most up in the air awards season I can remember and those rules we all like to follow when predicting who will get nominated and who will win? I don't think half of them will apply this year.

  5. I could see enough Sabermetrics types who wouldn't vote for Jeter to keep his vote in the 95 % range, maybe 96-97. Still very high, but I don't think he'll threaten Griffey's record. Rivera might be another story.

Still, at the end of the day, whatever anger I may have towards the vote isn't going to be directed by those who didn't vote for Griffey on a stacked ballot, but rather those who did vote for the likes of David Eckstein (3 votes), Mike Sweeney (8 votes), Jason Kendall (2 votes) and Garrett Anderson (1 vote). The people who made those 14 votes, those are the ones who have a lot more explaining to do in my mind.

  6. The opening bits where Brian kept imagining how he might be exposed with Sands and the FBI in the same room was funny, but my favorite was Rebecca and Sands being in his head in his debate over who to trust.  Complete with Rebecca in that silly sweater, and Sands in the "bad boy" get-up.  And then Jason just shows up for no reason.  Heh.

And his father shows up with the advice that he ends up listening to, which I think makes sense given his relationship with him.

I liked that we saw Morra in the beginning using his NZT brain to not only figure out what was going to happen with the attempted assassination, but we also saw him run through the possible headlines from the different outcomes.

I'm inclined to believe Piper as well, but that might just be because Morra and Sands always seems so shady. I do like that there's someone else involved with NZT outside of the FBI and the Morra faction.

  7. So much of Carol's discussion seemed to focus on the two leads (especially Mara's category placement) that I wonder if it blotted out its chances in the rest of the categories it may have had a shot including Best Picture/Director? It's been such a hard year to get any type of read on the major categories, so who knows for sure?

My guess on the 5 films getting DGA nominations:

    The Big Short
    Mad Max: Fury Road
    The Martian
    The Revenant
    Spotlight

  8. The PGA nominees:

    The Big Short
    Bridge of Spies
    Brooklyn
    Ex Machina
    Mad Max: Fury Road
    The Martian
    The Revenant
    Sicario
    Spotlight
    Straight Outta Compton

The movies that seemed to be getting the most mention of being "snubbed" are Carol, Room and The Hateful Eight. I'm personally disappointed by Creed's lack of nomination, although I admit I didn't see many of the movies nominated. I would say it's a boost for Bridge of Spies, Straight Outta Compton and Sicario, although I'm sill not sold on the latter getting nominated for BP.

Also of note, are the Ace Eddie Awards, for editing, and the Art Directors Guild awards.

  9. First Pernell Roberts, now Wayne Rogers.

    Is Elliot Gould next?

Parnell Roberts died nearly 6 years ago.

The reference is to actors who had played the character of Trapper John. Rogers played him in the M*A*S*H TV series, Roberts played him on the show Trapper John, M.D., and Gould played him in the original movie that proceeded them both.

I loved Rogers on M*A*S*H, also enjoyed him as Charlie Garrett on Murder, She Wrote. RIP.

  10. I never did get to see the Globetrotters when I was a kid, but I did watch them on TV a lot and I loved watching Meadowlark, who was quite the showman.

And Lemmy...oh man, that's a tough one for me. A true legend. Lemmy was God.

  11. The 2016 inductees have been announced. They are:

    Cheap Trick

    Chicago

    Deep Purple

    N.W.A

    Steve Miller

Miller is going in by himself. I don't follow the Steve Miller Band that closely, but I imagine there's a few other guys who were around long enough (especially during the 60's and 70's) that they could have been inducted with him.

Deep Purple is the best in class among this group for me, truly a band that I think should have been a long time ago. I'm fine with the others, although I think N.W.A is probably the only other one of the five besides Deep Purple that I would vote for.

  12.

What the what was with Granger and that girl?? I half expected him to tell her she was his daughter!

I'm still not convinced that she isn't his daughter, or that we're supposed to believe that. Very odd scene that stands out like a sore thumb unless there's some kind of payoff later, at least more than Granger isn't as much of a Grinch as we thought he was.

I know it would have cost a lot to bring the actors in, but I would have loved to have seen everyone at Sam's house.

  13. No clue about my grandfathers' underwear (thankfully), but my mother, while not on the level of my father in the swearing department, did swear enough that it didn't startle us or anything when she did it. She was from New York and we lived in Maryland, so again there's that northeast connection.

  14. Judd Hirsch stepping in for Paul Sorvino? I like him a lot, but I'm not sure he's the best fit for a mean old grump. A lovable old grump, yep, but I don't get the idea Murray's father is supposed to be very lovable.

Cats in the Cradle has been used so much in entertainment that I was ready to hate that plot, but damn if they didn't make it work. So much is made of relationship between Beverly and Adam, but I actually think I like the Murray/Adam relationship more.

Marv was great, as always. This show does Thanksgiving episodes as well as anybody.

Oh and on a shallow note, wow did Erica look great in that Phillies uniform.

  15. I realize I'm in a pretty distinct minority, but I generally like Andy and Haley together. I do agree they need to get a move on with their relationship, though.

As for the episode, it was pretty silly, but I enjoyed it and liked that for the most part, the couples and characters featured weren't at each other's throats or trying to one up each other like is so often the case with this show. The bit with everyone being still while Phil was playing his game made me laugh a lot, as did the adventures with the remote control.
