Was the Canadian anthem broadcast on FOX?  I didn't see it but I wish I had so I too could decide to be outraged/not outraged at the apparent political statement.

Of course Fox didn't show the Canadian anthem. I can't remember the last time they did.

And apparently the political statement was all due to a Rogue Tenor.

  2. If anyone wants to get lost for hours, the Emmy ballots have been posted at the Emmys site.

I'm worried that with the some of the more recent high profile miniseries (The People vs OJ Simpson, Roots, etc) that Fargo could get largely forgotten. I still think it's the best thing I've seen on TV this past year.

On the series front, I'm all about The Americans getting anything outside of the lazy Margo Martindale for Guest Actress one we've seen the last couple years.

Oh and I would love to see someone from Veep's great supporting cast get a nomination beyond Tony Hale and Anna Chlumsky.

  3. So without any prior mention that I can think of, Volleyball is now Shay's big dream? Well, that's Degrassi for you! That little bit in the beginning with the close up on the girls' faces was pretty sweet, and I did like seeing Goldi being one of the girls.

It was mentioned that students were returning from winter break, which I guess would mean January, right? I imagine there's tons of people riding around Toronto with the top down on their convertibles in January. I did like the Hunter and Miles scenes, those two actors play well off each other. I wish we had gotten more focus on the Hunter/Miles stuff and less focus on Miles and the godawful Tristan, as well as Maya and her various whatevers, although, hey welcome back, Peter.

  4. The movie will take place in the 70's, so I guess the pretending to be gay concept might make some sense. However, the people watching the film will be seeing it through a 2016 prism and it's hard to imagine the casual homophobic jokes that were a staple of that show landing with anything but a thud. Oh and let's face it, what made that show work when it did was John Ritter, and sadly, he's not walking through the door anytime soon.

Regarding The Girl on the Train, as someone who just finished the novel I gotta say that I'm disappointed they switched the locale from London to New York. The setting was probably my favorite part of the book.

  5. Were there any TS? If so, I didn't get any.

I remember two of them, one about Wisconsin being the state in which Paul Ryan and Heather Graham were born on the same day, which I actually thought was a pretty bad one for them to miss, and then Zac Brown was the answer to one of the clues in the Country music category.

I never get worked up board hopping and starting categories at the bottom, but I have to admit that I did get a perverse pleasure out of McKinnie failing to find that Daily Double he was obviously intent on getting.

Add me to the group that has never read any Grafton books (a male reader too), who found FJ to be a pretty easy get. The way she titles her books is pretty memorable.

  6. I howled at Davis serenading Ruby with 'I Don't Have The Heart' as the bathroom caught fire.

I had to rewind that scene a couple of times because I was laughing so hard when Davis was yelling "fire!"

Also loved the Diff'rent Strokes sequence.

  7. Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the LaSalle/Percy thing either. The whole "we've been working together for a long time" thing made me roll my eyes too. No, you haven't been working together for a long time. Percy, you have't even been an NCIS agent for a full year- there's plenty about LaSalle and the rest of team that you probably don't know, and that's the way it should be at this point in their relationship.

So, yes, show, please avoid the hammer with LaSalle/Percy.

  8. I'll say this much for Crowe, the movie he'll be promoting on that appearance looks hilarious, not that it really means much in terms of how successful he'll be on this show.

As for JLD, I'm a big fan, but I have to admit that the last season or two I've been enjoying the supporting characters on Veep more than her.

  9. Interesting that it ended up winning the first and last awards of the night, but nothing in between.

I finally got around to seeing it this past weekend and it was well worth the wait. A terrific piece of film making with a superb cast. I was very happy to see it win Best Picture.

  10. The "keep calm" phrases are rather ubiquitous, but the original is a bit less so - I can't say where you "should" have seen it (at least one of the parodies) because they're everywhere. I can't go to the mall without seeing at least one piece of merchandise with a keep calm phrase, and they're all over the internet as well.

That probably helps explain why I was unaware of the phrase when the answer was revealed as well. Outside of the attached movie theaters, I don't think I've been to a mall to go shopping in about ten years. The one closest to me closed and I don't like shopping enough to go out of my way to another one. As for the internet, not going on Facebook seems to help in avoiding some (not all) ubiquitous items.

It seems like forever since we've had a TOC qualifying run from a player, so I'm hoping Tim sticks around for at least a bit more.

  11. I liked the Eagles and the Glenn Frey tribute. What am I missing that some of you don't like? I am still so sad about this.

I do think, however, that Jackson Browne needs a haircut. :)

I liked the Eagles performance too, and Jackson Browne was a perfect choice to perform with them considering he co-wrote that song.

I wish the Hamilton performance had been live at the Staples Center, but I understand why it wasn't.
