  1. Ugh, the Rybackis. Who else remembers Mary Lee Tracy at the 2000 Trials with Alyssa Beckerman where Alyssa made a mistake and MLT is caught on camera berating her saying, "How many times, Alyssa?" And Morgan White said she was forced to hide the injury that eventually led to her withdrawing from the Olympics and that an eating disorder and overtraining led her to need compete hip replacement surgery in her 30s.
  2. Simone confirmed via her IG account that she has the twisties and while she's had it before, it's "only" been on vault and floor before and right now it's all four events. She has moved to a private gym in Tokyo that has a foam pit and more mats so she can try to work through it safely. She is unsure herself of the role of stress in developing or managing the twisties but she is clearly very frustrated with the timing. She re-iterated for the keyboard warriors that she was not struggling with this before she got to Tokyo - it started the day after prelims/before team finals, and when she pulled herself, it was for her own safety but also because she felt her scores would be so low that they would be a liability for the team medaling at all. In the past, it's taken her 2-3 weeks to work through the twisties but since this is the Olympics, she is being medically evaluated everyday and trying to work through it step by step. It's worth noting, although she didn't mention this in her video, that for event finals, the gymnasts do NOT get a one-touch warm-up. (But we care about athlete safety you guys!) So I have to imagine if she competes, she's REALLY ready since she won't get a look at the podium equipment until she's going for real.
  3. New here, looking for a place to let out my gymnastics feelings. Regarding US men's gymnastics, the big factor is funding. Allan Bower, an alternate for the Olympic team this year, wasn't chosen to receive funding. They only have enough money for funding for 9 people and the team (including the specialist and the alternates) is 10 people, so they expected him to pay to train for the Games on his own dime. There was a GFM started to fund him. The biggest issue the US men have had for the better part of a decade is start value, but they're afraid to substantially upgrade because making a big mistake can get them removed from the National Team with such little money to go around. Alec Yoder who has the individual spot and made PH finals, is not even on the National Team! They also didn't fund Paul Juda, whose second place finish at the Pan Am Games allowed the US to get their individual slot in the first place. So...thanks for nothing, Paul? By their own disastrous making, USAG is now bleeding money so it's going to be very difficult to get the men's team to be more competitive without incentivizing it. They really did the best they absolutely could up until the final rotation and even then they were in a distant fourth place. The women are more well funded since that's where the stars are but of course the problems there are far more profound.
  4. Who had Kayla in the pool? Posted on her own verified Insta, Kayla is pregnant again. Due in July. She posted pics of Izaiah wearing a tshirt annoucing the impending arrival. Sigh.
  5. Saoirse Ronan in "The Crucible," the year she was Oscar nominated for "Brooklyn," IIRC.
  6. And on the flip side, Nastia would have made the 2004 team were she age-eligible. I believe at the time Marta was very open about that, and her scores as a junior were competitive with the senior scores.
  7. Nationals were on NBC (women on Saturday primetime, men on Sunday afternoon) but for the most part, the competitions these days are only on Universal Sports, which sometimes is an upgraded package depending on your cable provider. The next major competition is Worlds, which is not until October.
  8. She also was one of those who did a last-minute comeback attempt. I could talk forever about the 2000 team and who should/shouldn't have been on, but Dawes and Chow both qualified from the Magnificent Seven team, and they are the last repeat Olympians the US women's gymnastics team has had. So should any or any combination of Gabby/Aly/Kyla make it, it will be a tremendous accomplishment. Also, as was oft-mentioned on the broadcast, if Gabby returns, she will be the first Olympic AA champion to compete in the next Olympics since Nadia Comaneci in 1980! (Nadia won silver in a hotly contested AA final so, if Gabby were to medal again, she would also be the first AA champ to medal in another AA since Comaneci in 1980.) The race to make this team, assuming everyone stays healthy, is going to be more difficult than the competition to actually win the Olympics, I suspect. We could send two teams right now and win gold and silver with them. Tremendous.
  9. The Emmys rotate among the four major networks (CBS, ABC, NBC, and Fox). They were on CBS two years ago, so CBS obviously would have called upon JM as one of their biggest stars to be a presenter. Fox is airing them this year (the host is Andy Samberg because of "Brooklyn Nine-Nine") so I doubt JM will be there in any capacity. My big hope is that the opening monologue has a strongly worded joke about the feud. I was surprised that AC got a nomination this year. He was dropped last year and he didn't have a particularly strong storyline and the voters didn't love the show overall. But kudos to him, CB, and MFJ on their nominations!
  10. Long time lurker (here and TWOP), first time DM poster. The most prophetic part of this episode was the girls getting to choose what kind of character to play - and Maddie chose a "girl who hates herself."
