  1. I thought this episode was pretty strong.  I found myself laughing out loud most during this episode than others in the season.

I especially like how Larry was feeling thrown about having slept with someone who is now a man but, other than a brief comment by Jeff, the people in the room were unfazed by that fact. Instead, they were obsessed with the fact that Larry's a floor fucker.  And why he did that.

If she’s Vietnamese, most of them would be second generation or later.  They escaped Vietnam in the ‘70s so most of them the age of the masseuse would have been born and raised in the US.

The actress isn't Vietnamese. Her name is Tania Gunudi  She's from Indonesia and moved to the US when she was a teenager.  Her real voice does have a slight accent, although she likely exaggerated it for the show.

Oh, was the other one an actual RH as well? I only recognized Phaedra.

I only recognized Phaedra because of The Traitors but she and another guest star, Shamea Morton*, got special position in the credits.  Plus, I remember seeing something in my feed about housewives guest starring so I'm assuming the other one was a housewife.

But I'm pretty sure the assistant character wasn't a reality star but rather a regular actress playing a reality star.

*Yes, I had to Google it. :) And in doing so, apparently, Shamea's actually an actress too but appearas as a "friend" on RHOA.  The more you know.

They really seemed to enjoy each other’s company, but it was clear that the consensus was that Jimmy F was the last in line when the brains were passed out.

That's a great podcast, especially after it gets going.  I do think it displayed Fallon's rumored moodiness because I don't think his issue is smarts (although I do think the other guys probably know more things--but Fallon is quick too), but rather he seemed kind of checked out in earlier episodes.  Once he engaged more fully, the podcast improved.

But the amazing mess that he ended up creating in Ep. 5 either showed us why his producers are so important or was a brilliantly intentional disaster.  Either way, it was one of my favorite podcast episodes I've ever listened to.

The contestants in the latest episode were so frustrating at their guessing half of the response.  Also frustrating was for none of the clue givers to just say "combine" as a clue.  I get that it's hard in front of the lights compared to my couch but I did think it was hilarious.  At least they were evenly matched.

Angie and Ormewood are still on their own show, doing their own things, and Ormewood's wife finally left him, which we all saw coming so I'm not sure why that was supposed to be shocking or whatever.

I think what was surprising is that she didn't just leave  Ormewood but left their children as well.  The note said they were at the neighbor's house.   If she were just going to leave him, as in divorcing him, I suspect she would have asked him to leave the house.

  5. I don't think Soo is an alternate.  Since this show lives on streaming, they could have easily waited until the third week to start it.

I suspect Soo was the plan all the long to do something different and it's why I expect him to show up in week 5 or 6--just to see the chefs go "who's that?"

Actually, Tom said at one point a lot of the chefs didn't understand the challenge and were just turning snacks into other snacks so maybe there's an overall communication issue?

I didn't really agree with his take there.  Putting them into two groups who had to work together basically gave them the impression they'd be presenting competing tasting menus.  Usually in tasting menus, the courses are small and that's what they gave them.  The whole experience isn't something they normally think about when working on their own.

I did not know that it's possible to cook with hops.  I'd never seen one and had no idea what those green things were when the segment opened.

I believe an Iron Chef episode had "hops" as a secret ingredient.  I know I've seen it once before.

I ate at the Driftless Cafe this summer so it was exciting to see the chef/owner at the table.

  7. Awwww, I'm a bit bummed about Julian.  He was a scamp and a con man but I enjoyed him nevertheless.

One thing I liked about 9-1-1 was a relatively low body count. I hope they don't change that at ABC.  It might be unrealistic, but I enjoy few deaths.

I suppose it depends on how contracts are written, but do writers get residuals from reruns? I agree, either way, he doesn't need the money to pay the bills.

They do get residuals but Phil wasn't just a writer. He was the creator.  Every time the show gets sold into reruns or a foreign adaptation is made, he gets paid.

He probably enjoys a lot of the trips he's taking.

He's working with the same production company as Anthony Bourdain's travel show.  I do think he likes working with his family on this but I don't think that's the reason he does the show.  I was just reading an article about his choice to do the show.  After Everyone Loves Raymond, he was looking at what to do next and he felt like he could combine traveling with filming.  And thus, the show was born.

Phil’s back! I started with Kyoto, because I’ve always wanted to go. It’s beautiful—hope you like fish. Plus, Monica.

I'm half way through the Dubai episode.  Kyoto really was magical.  I've never felt compelled to travel to Japan but Kyoto flipped that switch.

I have to admit that I feel a little Iceland-d out because it feels like everyone is going there or filming there but this show has a way of making everything look exceptional and I started to love it again.

I really like the approach they're taking with Dubai since there are so many immigrants there.  It's a way to travel to many different countries they might not otherwise visit. I can't decide if the dropped most expensive hamburger was real or a bit.

  9. I loved the cooking challenge.  It's not a physically daunting challenge but cooking in the same kitchen really brings out a certain dynamic in couples that they might not experience anywhere else. They can be super supportive everywhere else but at each other's throats in the kitchen. Didn't Derek say he's not allowed in the kitchen while Shelisa is cooking?

I'm happy Ricky and Cesar won the challenge.  It really seemed crafted for them.  Language skills.  Professional cooking skills.  I bet they saved a lot of time at the cooking challenge because of that.

She's on for about 30 seconds so if you feel like watching, her part is really easy to skip.  Heck, the whole plot is pretty easy to skip.

Has a third season been confirmed or is that still waiting for an announcement?

    No announcement yet.

I hope it gets a third season.  The writing might not be top-tier calibre yet but I do think it has improved from the first season.  But one area where it absolutely did hit it out of the park this season is with the guest cast. They landed some big comedy guest stars.  They're not necessarily big names but they're the type of comedic actors who typically deliver if there's anything there to deliver and even sometimes when there's nothing.

I am somewhat surprised - I always assumed they had actors sign multiple  year contracts so they could plan out story arcs like this.

On American TV they do but I've always assumed the UK contracts are shorter as there has historically been more cast turnover in the British shows I've watched that last beyond 3 seasons than American shows.  Some have been mentioned above but there has also been Ben Miller (or any detective) from Death In Paradise, the clergy in Grantchester, Nicola Walker in Unforgotten,  and the biggie, Dan Stevens from Downton Abbey

I just heard about his departure being permanent and I've read some discussion of his departure online to cope but one thing I don't recall seeing come up is that family logistics might have played a big part in his decision.  For one, he's married to a working actress and they have two kids.  Then, there's the fact that production moved from Dublin in the first season to Belgrade, Serbia for the subsequent seasons.  If his wife and kids are London-based, travel between Dublin and London was probably much easier than traveling to Serbia.  He might have gotten tired of it after three seasons.

And if that's the case, I'm slightly hopeful we'll see him again.

I don't believe Lucy's article indicated she was advocating for a "bodice ripper" at all.  And she was dead on when she said: "The overarching cases of the week have consistently been Miss Scarlet’s weakest elements. Sure, the show has done a frequently remarkable job finding ways to ground its weekly stories in specific and unique female experiences – a welcome shift from many shows of its ilk! – but it’s never been that compelling as a straight mystery series."

One place I don't agree with Lucy's article that William leaving abandons the premise of the show.  It might diverge from the title and logline she described but the show did that as early as Season 1. It was pretty clear from early on that the show was centered around Eliza and her relationships.  She was the lead and everyone else, even the Duke, was supporting.

Another place I disagree is that no one would have watched it if it were just a Victorian lady detective show.  That's not true.  I liked the sexual tension but I would have watched the show without it.

As for a possible new love interest or new character, they could have kept the title if they had just brought in a character who is actually a duke.

Maria could well have been a production nightmare with her capricious ways, but she would definitely be entertaining. After 2 back-to-back Right Reasons seasons where the lead seemed to find someone they genuinely wanted to be with, I could do with a palate cleanser of a slightly nutty girl keeping a group of guys on their toes.

Jenn could be that.  You never know.

Producers really shit the bed with the Bachelorette pick. I'm sure Jenn is lovely (though when they announced her, I was like, "Who?!"), but they literally had an audience pick for the entire season (Maria - and I say that because she seemed very popular on social media/in the Bachelor hashtag). Why wouldn't they pick someone the viewers are excited about? Unless Maria turned it down, it doesn't make sense.

It makes a lot of sense if you're a producer.  Maria is very popular but they need to deliver a season of television and need a lead reliable enough to make that happen.

Maria's unpredictability could make for some great television but I have to imagine her threatening to walk away twice when things got hard would make them nervous about making her the main character. They don't want another Clare season on their hands.

    18 minutes ago, funnygirl said:

And Daisy saying no on camera had to have been planned. They aren't going to announce a Bachelorette without having her signed on the dotted line. They're not going to say, "Okay, let's ask Daisy, but if she says no then #2 you're up!"

Oh definitely.  I think Daisy was probably their top choice.  This finale seemed edited to launch her season more than it was to celebrate Joey & Kelsey which is pretty typical.  Since the new season starts filming really soon, they already knew Daisy wasn't going to be the Bachelorette.  I think they wanted her to come on stage to explain why she said no because they knew people would be rooting for her and not to make it seem like she was saying no in real-time.

  16. I feel like they're doing a lot of cakes this season.  Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought cakes used to be mostly reserved for the final challenge and they'd do a variety of different desserts for the final challenge  By the time we get to the finale, we'll be caked out.

I didn't love the way this team challenge elimination was handled.  Usually they at least have a more clear delineation of what one partner did vs. the other partner but these efforts were truly togetherness.  I imagine they must have relied on the producers to tell them who did what.

That said, Sabrina did deserve to go.

    29 minutes ago, mlp said:

The cake was a failure but it was mostly Sabrina's fault.  She screwed up something she claimed to be really good at and then blamed the mess on "time" during judging.

I do think time played a role.  She said she is used to having more time for things to solidify/harden before she starts stabbing it with the dowel.

One thing I've loved this season (and Gerry's women also) is that there is no where near as much overly made up women - we've seen natural, let it go hair, and I think even some either make up free, or very minimal.

It can sometimes take a lot of makeup to look natural but I do agree that there have been some great looks on this season when it comes to hair and makeup.

Did I hear right? Before Joey introduced Kelsey to his family, did he describe her as silly? So silly? Seems like an odd thing to say about your intended.

I think he used it as a synonym for goofy as in they can be silly together.  They showed a bit of that during the spa date.

That's probably the least acrimonious rejectee talk with the Bachelor on AFR that I can remember

I know people didn't love when Joey shut things down with people but in the end, I do think it lead to the women taking the hint and not being blindsided when they're let go which is why so many still have positive feelings towards him and their time with him.

Did Rachel just find out it’s not her?!? She looked pissed shaking her head and seemingly yelling at someone when they introduced Daisy as Bachelorette.

I don't think she was mad.  I think she was just confused. I suspect she had potentially heard that Jen was the bachelorette or that Daisy wasn't and was surprised when they brought Daisy out on stage.

    What does Copaganda mean?

It's a combination of cop and propaganda.  It refers to cop shows that almost always put cops in a good light, especially if they're the main characters. They only want justice and aren't influenced by biases.  They're good family people.  All force is justified and necessary force.  Even when they do go over top, the show will vindicate them somehow.  Internal Affairs are always the bad guys...etc.

I feel pretty dense, but neither my husband or I understood what having clearance meant wrt Conan O'Brien.

I took from it that Conan is a famous person and a stranger, even another famous person, just can't approach a famous person to strike up relationship/friendship without being introduced by a mutual acquaintance.  So clearance in this instance would be Richard telling Conan "Hey, do you know Larry David lives in your new neighborhood?  You two should meet."

Richard, someone Conan trusts, is vouching for Larry.

They did the annoying Hallmark thing where Katherine was quite snarky and antagonistic with Tyler right from the get-go due to their history, and it made me think “why in the world would anyone be drawn to her”.

Pronunciation is the purpose the accent serves.   As I learned when I was abroad, sometimes it's just easier to let the native speakers pronounce my name the way they want to rather than trying to get the correct pronunciation from them. (It's why Timothée Chalamet goes by Timothy even though his actual name would be pronounced Teemotay. His dad is French but he lives in the US.)

My thoughts exactly.  Nolan wasn't a good prosecutor at all if he couldn't get a conviction or at least a hung jury with this case in NYC.  He basically just gave up once the "surprise" witness came forward and let her ramble about things he assumed and even things she thought the defendant assumed.  If he wants to talk about what he assumed, he can get on the witness stand.

I was on Baxter's side.  The facts, as presented, pointed to murder even without the testimony of the undercover cop---and we don't even know what he knew.
