I wonder if we'll see Holly again. I almost didn't recognize Patricia Heaton with her grey hair.

I'm pretty sure we will.  I think they announced her as recurring when they announced her as cast.

  2. It's funny because I thought for sure I read that he had already changed his mind about a year or so ago.  But then the media spoke as if his retiring was a real possibility, so I thought I had made it up in my head.

And it makes sense.  He probably thought 50 years sounded good when 50 was an abstract concept.  Now that it's closer, actually stopping working doesn't sound as appealing.

  3. I did laugh at a few lines but I felt uncomfortable with the episode since I felt it basically lifted the same scenario from one of Frasier's best episodes, Are You Being Served? Or at least the episode with the best outtakes.

In that episode, Niles realized he was making life choices based on his mother's observations of lab rats.

In this one, it was because of a Magic 8 Ball knockoff.

New show premiering tonight High Potential sounds like it has potential.  May be another Columbo-esque type.

    It's more "whodoneit" than Columbo.

It's based on a French series called HPI that can be seen on Hulu with either subtitles or dubbing.  I watched a few episodes of the French series and while I love my French crime dramedies, HPI didn't do much for me.

I watched last night, too, and I had a hard time evaluating it as the pilot was basically a remake of the first episode of the French series, so it felt too familiar to me.  I do think I like Kaitlin Olsen better than the French lead which I feel guilty about because the French actress is very good and celebrated.  I'm also a fan of Judy Reyes.  I wish they had hired a different lead detective, though.

As with most mystery adaptations, I look forward to when it moves in its own direction away from the original.

It's particularly sad that younger gay men, like Evan, don't bother to read about the plague that wiped out much of an entire generation of gay men.

I don't think his not immediately associating KS with Kaposi's Sarcoma indicates he's unaware of the history of HIV/AIDS.  I've read about that period, seen movies, and watched documentaries about it. Unlike HIV and AIDS where an acronym is often used, I don't recall that with Kaposi's.  They may have referred to it as KS but not to the extent that it seeped into my brain where I'd immediately make the association.

  6. The gun club story felt too serious without enough relief in it until the very end when Evan gets a thrill out of realizing he's a good shooter.

That's why I appreciated the hot list story.  For one, the guy who created it ended up seeming more into fashion than lusting after his teacher.  And Gwen's reaction to the list was hilarious if very inappropriate.

Skylar by all means was no saint but according to the Walt devotees she was the bitchiest bitch to ever bitch.

Every time this comes up, this is the character I think of.  Over the first two seasons, she was lied to by her husband about his whereabouts, his drug dealing, his illness and his work with his former student. He missed his daughter's birth because of it.  He killed people. He sexually assaulted her.

But because she gave him a lackluster hand job in the premiere episode, so many perceived her to be the devil's incarnate and all questioning of her very lying husband was uncalled for.

I just saw them sitting together. Are they actually dating? Or are they sitting next to each other as cast members? Either way, I think it is good.

They've been seen out and about together.  And they were seen holding hands at a premiere party for this season of the show.

But every time they're asked, they say they're just good friends so it's hard to know for sure.

Jean Smart is just unbeatable. 🏆

I'm thrilled she won.  As much as I love Ayo, Hacks is actually a comedy.

As much as most people say The Bear’s best season is Season 3, well, so is Hacks’ Season 3 the best of its bunch.

I don't think people say The Bear Season 3 is the best.  In fact, it has a lot of detractors. But even if it were, the episodes it's eligible for at this year's Emmys are from Season 2.  Season 3 will be eligible for next year.

  10. Yeah.  The movie last night was very Hallmark but veered towards the light-hearted, comforting kind of Hallmark over the annoying kind of Hallmark.  Still mostly background noise but enjoyable background noise.  But I've mostly like Jodie in these movies and find Corey Sevier to be pretty reliable as a lead.

I even expected a twist to Evil Dottie too.

My only quibble is that for a woman that rich and not utterly stupid, her fortune wouldn't have been tied to crypto the way it was nor would she not know that her portfolio had Apple in it.  It still may have been unrealistic but it might have worked better for her to have been a victim of a Ponzi scheme and then they discover her aunt had the Apple portfolio.

  11. I'm glad to see the rotating group of detectives is back. I was a little worried they were going to get rid of them and make Kaya the constant detective since the boss said she should think about becoming one.

I like Kaya a lot but I've also enjoyed many of the guest detectives.

  12. I'm sad Rory and Mel had their breakup but they do need a break.  I get Rory has issues with his dad but it's insane to ask his best friend to turn down a leadership opportunity because of it when she seems like a good candidate for it.

I get feeling like being an only friend can be exhausting but he does ditch her for dates even during important events for her.  That said, she was wrong to be mad that he doesn't co-sign her loan with her.  As he has said, it's his dad that's rich, not him.  (Unless he does already have access to his trust fund?  I was confused about the requirements related to that.  I do know it's the only reason he's working.)

So I guess supervisors can date people they supervise at JFK?  Alex didn't seem all that worried about telling HR.

  13. I love Natasha Rothwell. I saw her on The White Lotus and Insecure and found her enjoyable in both places.  I also remember Conrad Ricamora from Fire Island and from How To Get Away with Murder from the brief amount of time I watched that.

The one thing I don't love is that her love interest is her boss and engaged to someone else.  I'm not sure if we're supposed to be rooting for them. He's handsome as hell so I probably could get over one of those things but not both.

  14. The Cases of Mystery Lane was fun again. I never knew how much I needed Salsa Dance Teacher Paul Campbell in my life until now.  That scene was so much fun.

And even though the guilty party became pretty obvious very early on because the culprit did something that I just knew would become a clue later on, the way they caught the guilty party was delightfully unhinged and surprising so I didn't care so much about figuring it out.

  15. Every generation has its issues to fight, but anecdotes are one data point in the sea of millions of other data points.

That's why social scientists do the work they do. They bring the data points together so we deal with a broader perspective over an individualized perspective.

Adjusting for inflation from about 30 years ago until today:

The average home price (so including expensive cities like NYC and cheapo places like Rural, AL) has increased 75%.

The average first time home buyer's age increased from 31 to 35.

The average cost of education has increased 181%.

The number of people living in shared housing has increased from approximately 25% to 35-40%.

And the average salary has only increased about 40%.

But when you look at what it costs for a cell phone, for a phone plan with data, for Wi-fi, for multiple TV streaming services, for a laptop and all the rest of it; young people have a baseline cash requirement that I didn't have at their age.

Personal stat, my up-to-date Android cell phone with a data plan per month is actually cheaper than my landline was about 20 years ago in raw numbers.  So not even adjusting for inflation. People forget how expensive those suckers were.

Multiple streaming services?  If they're doing streaming services, they're often sharing.  And they aren't doing cable.  But a lot of people will do maybe one or two services and they just stream for free on YouTube or TikTok.

Laptop? People had computers back then and they were more expensive.  They cost the same as they do today in raw numbers.  (So again, not adjusted for inflation.)

So people are still living with other people/roommates in shitholes (I hear about them from the people I work with.) Degree inflation for entry-level jobs is still a thing.

Are there young people out there with a high standard of living?  Of course but if they don't have parents funding their expectations, they eventually take what they can afford.  They have to, right?  But I suspect images of those privileged few are being extrapolated to paint a whole generation with a broad brush.

Most don't have that luxury.  They gotta work.  They gotta live.  And they gotta eat.

But there's one thing I can guarantee won't change, the time-old tune of "the generations that bitched about my generation were 100%wrong but my generation is 110% right when we do it about 'kids these days'."

I keep reading how Late Night with Seth Meyers has low ratings and they fired the band because of budget cuts. But I can't imagine that it being cancelled is a huge risk, since what else is NBC going to put on at 12:35. Plus Lorne Michaels is a producer of the show and he probably isn't someone that NBC wants to annoy.

It wasn't a Meyers thing.  It was a NBC late night thing. Both The Tonight Show and Late Night with Seth Meyers had to reduce their budget. For Meyers, it was the live band.  For Fallon, he's now only doing 4 episodes a week compared to 5.

I think it's hard for me to read what "good" ratings are, especially since he's the only talk show on at that time, but they did just give him an hour-long Live A Closer Look special tonight.

That's what makes ratings so hard to read.  There are the live numbers we get.  But then there are the numbers on streaming which we don't.  Then, there are the numbers of streaming segments on YouTube that apparently matter to the networks, too.

And for other shows, ownership matters quite a bit about what survives.

For instance, 9-1-1 was FOX's most watched drama but they cancelled it.  The production company that made the show used to be under the same company umbrella as the FOX network so that umbrella company got all the money from distribution.  Once the production company was sold to Disney, the show became too expensive to keep.  However, Disney picked up all that backend money which is why 9-1-1 now airs on ABC.

(^^^ from the episode 1 thread)

I read that and thought, lol, true, but super picky. I certainly wouldn’t let that take me out of it!  But then in this episode, The English Teacher says “… if something happens between you and I …”

    sigh.

Oh I forgot to respond to this.  It looks like Evan is more of a lit teacher than grammar teacher.

I'm trying to forgive the adoption of colloquialisms in speech even from people who should know better. It's the kind of thing that stands out when reviewing writing but once you say something, you can't really pull it back. This is especially true with the rise in the misuse of I and me. After he has heard it enough...

Then you have the other extreme...shows that keep on going long past their prime but they still keep churning out seasons of that show, despite the drop in viewership and critical acclaim but hey, it's still making a profit right? Granted, that seems to affect network and cable shows more than streaming shows, but still.

It doesn't affect streaming as much because streamers are often global and they use distribution in those countries to attract new subscribers.

Network and cable shows earn ad revenue but can sell syndication, streaming rights and international distribution.  Selling is where the money is.

It's why some production companies that pulled their titles from Netflix to have them exclusively stream on the platforms they owned reversed course and started selling to other streamers again.  There was some benefit in streaming exclusively on a streamer they owned but there was more money in not being exclusive.
