My mom speculated about this, and i'd wondered, too, if we'd find out that John's name was a cover. John Smith is such a common, ordinary name, it almost feels like it HAS to be a cover name for someone like him.

They met his brother so I doubt it's a cover name.

The NJ DA who gave that psycho serial killer immunity on the 2nd murder and the FBI boss who didn't put full resources on this case in the interest of protecting other women/future victims should both be fired.

The DA should never make a deal like that without discussing it with the victim's family to know their preferences.  Or they should have made immunity contingent on actually finding her body based on the information he provided.

As for the FBI, the agent's supervisors likely did nothing wrong.  The FBI likely didn't have investigative authority to pursue these cases formally.  The FBI can't just investigate whatever they want.  There are guidelines about what falls into the federal jurisdiction and these murders likely didn't.  Each one was under the authority of the state where they took place.

I'm inclined to think that it's the changes and the way the challenges were designed rather than the chefs themselves.  They all have credentials and laurels which we saw in episode one.  They can't be as bad as they look.  A cheese challenge outdoors when the temperature was 98F got them off to a bad start and they haven't recovered.  The Chaos challenge was awful, mostly because the loud slob who introduced it didn't explain it clearly.

I think it's a combination of construction and chefs.  It's not like it's the first time chefs have had to deal with challenging conditions.  Cheese isn't some kind of mysterious ingredient either.  It's baffling that so many defaulted to croquettes for the challenge with the same speed Chopped contestants default to bread pudding in the dessert round.

As for the chaos challenge, even if he mangled the description, production would be there to make sure the rules are clear.  It sounds like Kristin still isn't sure of what the challenge was supposed to be and if anyone would know, it'd be her and the judges.

  3. Plus, the first three episodes of the season involved a massive set piece in the cruise ship.  I imagine that ate up quite a bit of the budget which is why the rescues in the past two episodes were smaller.

There's sure a lot of people who died at Deal Mart.  Maybe it's the dollar-fifty hot dogs?

I loved that the Black Friday TV holding ghost was played by the same actress who played Carol in Superstore.  A nice bit of stunt casting.

It seems to me that Harvey was convicted on little more than Hollywood gossip.

I don't see it that way. Gossip is "I heard this about so and so."  The women who testified shared their personal, lived experiences with Weinstein about how he abused them. That kind of testimony is often allowed in court.  The original judge and 3 of the 7 upper court judges thought it met the burden.  4 in the upper court felt it did not.  So the judges looking at the case were split evenly overall. It just happens that 4 happened to be an upper-court majority.

  6. I finally saw Falling in Love in Niagra, and the scenery and stars helped elevate the movie beyond the many nitpicks I had.  First, I like Dan Jeannote, and I absolutely love Jocelyn Hudon.  I've seen three Hallmark movies where she's the lead, and I found myself more invested than I usually am for each one. And it's the only thing I've seen her in so it's not like I came pre-liking her.

But there were some things that left me scratching my head.  I think the fiance seemed like two different people.  In the beginning, I felt like he had every right to call off the wedding.  5 weeks before the wedding isn't ideal, but it's better than just right before the wedding or sadly, after the wedding.  But she went to his house, took his laundry and threw away his clothes.  And she seemed to move forward with everything she wanted for the honeymoon without consulting him.  The villain POV she and her sister had for him felt unwarranted.

Then, when she first meets the lead, she throws money into his coffee and spills all over him and acts like he's unreasonable for not simply accepting "I had good intentions."  She made a mistake.  Don't most people, even when they have good intentions, apologize when good intentions go so wrong?

So I was on his side until he completely messed up his job by showing up late and not correctly scheduling a simple tour?

Luckily, they both got better after the first 30 minutes.

Then the fiance comes back with a complete character change.  Now he's being written like the villain they claimed he was earlier in the episode even though the actions we initially saw didn't back that up.  The thing that cracked me up the most about him is that he said he wanted to try again and "get married in the fall."  Not by the falls but in the fall.  The only thing is, the colors on the leaves indicate that this movie is taking place in the fall.  So is he talking about next fall?

I also wish the sister would have started a relationship with the tour company owner instead of the brother.

Yeah, I'm blaming the judge and prosecutors for this one. They should have known if allowing women to testify about unrelated charges/cases would be considered swaying the jury or prejudicial information, if those are the right terms.

They took a risk, but it's not like the court was unanimous in its decision about whether or not it was a reversible error.  It was 4-3.

Just because the mother says she wants the daughter to see him, doesn't mean she told the truth to the tabloid reporter.  And since he required a paternity test, it sounds like there were a lot of problems in that relationship.

Sure, but he is the father.  I guess she could be lying about him choosing to not even attempt to get visitation but I can't think of a situation where the child should pay the price for a poor relationship between the parents.

I think after all of this, my dish I would make for this would be to make a set of dumplings, like four on a plate for each judge. I would split my filling before stuffing and add something to each to make them as different as possible. One would be normal, one would be as spicy as possible without changing the appearance, one would be as sweet as can be without being revolting, and one would have the flavors of a different cuisine. So maybe Sui Mei but inside the fusion one there is mozzarella and basil. The judges would bite into it and each would get a totally different experience than the others. Would that be chaos? Who knows.

I think this is a great idea.  Introduce the dumplings and two main ingredients but not tell them there's going to be a culinary difference and hope everyone eats a different dumpling.  It'd all fall apart if everyone accidentally eats the same dumpling.

That "celebrity" ? Who the heck is he? No, dont answer. I dont care.

I know you don't care but since it's coming up a lot, he was hired as a chef consultant on The Bear, which is a very popular Hulu show about the workings of a restaurant.  He then got asked to appear on camera but he didn't want to play a chef so he plays a cousin or a friend or something like that.

If people haven't seen The Bear, it's a very intense show when it depicts the inner workings of a kitchen.  There's a lot of screaming, yelling, activity, and, yes...chaos.  That's why I don't think he was a replacement for someone else.  It's pretty clear the challenge was created to thematically align with the tone of the show he's on.

I don't understand some of the challenges they've had.  I've seen some people blame the Wisconsin tourism board but I don't think that's it.  There's no reason they couldn't have come up with a decent challenge for the chefs to serve at Taliesen which was absolutely a unique dining experience.  And The Bear is filmed in Chicago so the chaos theme has nothing to do with location.  Other challenges, like using cheese, cherries, and beer, should be no-brainers.  They're as simple and straightforward as it gets on Top Chef and there's no reason for the lack of creativity.

One thing I did like about this challenge is that, instead of shopping at Whole Foods, they had the choice to go to the Asian market or Latin market.  I'd like more of that and things like shopping at the Farmer's market.

Owen Wilson is officially good in my book.

Not that I ever disliked him before, he always struck me as a chill guy but hearing this? It’s nice to know some people have integrity!

He has a daughter he apparently ignores other than paying child support so good on him for not taking that role but I liked him less after hearing the rumor about his daughter.

  11. I'm not necessarily a Bo and Hope fan but I think it's fine for a mostly retired actor to set a rate and not do it if they don't want to meet the rate.

It's still work.  It's fine if people want to come back at a market rate but I don't think it's a moral failing to not want to. I don't know where he lives but we've heard through other articles that people have been offered jobs and the offer isn't even enough to cover travel.  I know I'm not doing anything work related that could cost me money.

It isn’t a conspiracy exactly, but it does read as scripted when a baker who hasn’t put a bake wrong and who is obviously talented suddenly makes absolutely amateur mistakes in back to back bakes in a near penultimate episode.

I guess it depends on who you people think was saved.  Alec?  I guess. However, he has had some off weeks.  But Nicky won the first challenge in the episode.

  13. I was disappointed in Sunday's episode.  She made chocolate chip pancakes and then topped them with a yogurt whipped cream.  The reason I'm disappointed is that she demonstrated how to make the pancakes but not the yogurt whipped cream.  It's okay that she demod the pancakes but we've seen pancakes be made before on TV.  Yogurt whipped cream is something different and I would have much preferred she dedicate some time to showing us that.  She didn't even provide a recipe.

I thought a lot of European baking wasn't super sweet?

There's a difference between not super sweet and no sugar.  European desserts are still sweet, they're just not as sweet (sometimes cloyingly so) as American desserts can get.  Sugar to baking is like salt to savory dishes.  It brings out the flavor in baked/cooked items and not having enough of it can make something taste a bit underwhelming.

I don't like my desserts overly sweet so I play with cutting back on sugar.  There have been points where I've cut back too much and fail to make a dessert.  I'm left with items that taste like balls of flour, or whipped dairy or mixed plain cream cheese instead of cookies, whipped cream or cream cheese frosting.

Even though this is an American baking show, I think the three judges wouldn't say "no sugar" if it was just because it was less sweet than other items.

They did the same thing for the Holiday Baking Championship. Alex and Nicky will face off for a spot in the final three.

They do it a lot.  In fact, I'm more surprised when the finale is only 3 people.

The past three seasons of Spring Baking Championship have had finales (episode 10) with 4 contestants either because they chose not to eliminate someone in episode 9 (this year and last year) or because they had an extra contestant somehow (maybe brought someone back in?)

    I don't think there's a conspiracy.

I've seen worse exits than KA's but as you said she didn't sue. Ari did which is why I don't expect her to ever return tbh. I mean Victoria Rowell(Drucilla on Y&R) sued CBS/Sony and still hasn't returned except for that RL tribute to Kristoff St. John the show did after he passed away.

But that's Y&R and not DOOL/Corday.  I've seen Corday cave and people I never thought would come back end up coming back.

I thought Dateline did a great job covering the murders, and thought for once it was a case that warranted a two hour episode.

I'm a bit in between.  I don't think it needed an hour of red herrings but I do think 90 minutes might have been the right amount of time. Normally, ancestral DNA stories can start to sound the same on true crime shows but I liked learning something new in this one. Having a lack of members of First Nations submitting to the DNA websites and having such close ties were two things I don't recall ever seeing discussed on this show before.  In fact, I don't recall hearing about them anywhere else.

There's another Wisconsin culinary tradition I can't get as excited about. Maybe they will go to Door County for the traditional fish boil.
    https://www.foodrepublic.com/2016/11/21/door-county-wisconsins-iconic-fish-boils-are-history-in-a-cauldron/

I remember reading an article that said, because of union contracts (or something like that), they don't travel more than 75 miles from their destination/home base.  That's when I knew we wouldn't be getting a sports-themed challenge at Lambeau Field.

Thanks for sharing the article.  I will be visiting Wisconsin this summer (though the western side) and will look for a fish boil to attend.

They're mostly a Door County thing.  You could probably find a fish fry or a pizza on the farm event but I think a fish boil, which is largely tied to Lake Michigan, is more of a tradition on the eastern side.

But do check out some of the apple farms, especially if you're in the southwest/Driftless area.

I'm disappointed they focused on brandy alexanders and not a rather unique version of the old fashioned--the brandy old fashioned.

My only criticism of this episode is Pete’s wife being MIA. I mean, they can’t have it both ways. Either she’s in the show or she isn’t . Only the basement ghosts are not always around.

Every once in a while in the first three seasons, one of the main ghosts would be missing with no explanation as to where they are.  So it's not just the downstairs ghosts who aren't always around.  I always assumed it was a cost-cutting measure.

Given the weight of the episode, I think it was a smart choice to keep it to the core group.  Besides, Carol doesn't know Flower.

  20. I never thought he was guilty because of who was playing him. But then he got her son a new job and  suddenly grew suspicious.  Does an innocent man court favor from the person he now suspects is investigating him?

It made the story very intriguing.  It's an element of complexity typical in shows by the Kings with the backdrop of a Colombo-esque case-of-the-week kind of show.

  21. I actually loved this episode and think it's one of the best of the reboot.  That's a low bar but it dealth with a very involved investigation with a lot of suspects and then the trial part actually had some nuance to it.

Was the waiter really the only one who witnessed the murder?  I know it was said that there were no security cameras inside the restaurant, but what about CCTV cameras?  Witness said the killer jumped into a black BMW, are we supposed to assume he was wrong?  Because otherwise we have both the lawyer and his wife getting into separate black BMWs?  How can the witness be that high that he can't tell the difference between a man and a woman?

He was high.  His adrenaline was going.  And the killer was wearing a puffy jacket and hat which likely covered identifying features which would give away the gender.

I don't think the witness was wrong about the car.  They were careful to state that the defendant had two cars of the same mark.  I suspect the wife put on his clothes in an effort not to be identified and took one of their cars.  The husband was driving the other one at the time--and that's what was caught by the traffic cameras.

And they did look at CCTV footage.  They caught the car every now and then but since it was dark, they likely couldn't see in the windows.  They also never got a good look at the plates.

As for him being in trouble for concealing the murder, he's not obligated to reveal what his wife told him in confidence.  It sounds like she made the mistake by confessing on the phone while he was in jail.  Maybe he didn't warn her because he didn't care if she got caught once she revealed it was her.

On 4/19/2024 at 11:41 AM, MinorL said:

Yes, it’s pretty standard evidence, and eyewitness testimony is actually direct evidence, not circumstantial. But, I definitely agree that Price should have been much more skeptical of the eyewitness because of the fact he didn’t mention the defendant the night of the murder.

Yep.  This is what I liked about the case and the discussion between Baxter and Price.  Baxter pointed out that sometimes evidence isn't perfect, and you go to trial with what you have and leave it up to the jury.  Sometimes that doesn't work because a defense attorney is bad but this guy had a good one.  And ultimately, the traffic ticket was enough to convince Price that they had the wrong guy.

But the witness discussion was interesting, too, because this is how poor identifications get made.  The waiter wanted to be helpful.  I don't even think he knew he was lying.  He had seen the guy he waited on and probably didn't really remember him that much and so, when the pictures were put in front of him, he did legitimately recognize him.  And since he probably couldn't immediately place him from the times he had served him, he assumed that the recognition was from the murder instead of the previous times he had seen him.

The only thing I would have liked is to see more of the cops going to reinvestigate Price's hunch.

  22. Buck can be impulsive but I'd argue he has grown quite a bit over the course of the series from dealing with his unusual childhood trauma, ditching his womanizing to date towards a potential relationship more than just to get laid, and crafting solid relationships where he's even considered a potential guardian should something happen to Eddie.

But more importantly, I don't think deciding to date a man is an example of refusing to grow up or impulsivity.  It's growing and opening himself to new facets of himself. People generally don't date people they know they won't be attracted to on a whim, so I think it's a pretty safe bet that Buck is romantically interested in Tommy.

And I do not think this show is going to be "whoopsie, we've changed our mind and he's not bi any longer."  That doesn't mean Buck won't date women again.  If things with Tommy don't work out, he probably will.  But this creative group is going to keep him bi.

On 4/17/2024 at 10:45 AM, iMonrey said:

That said, the show has been laying the groundwork for something like this to happen for years. Buck's chemistry with Eddie certainly hasn't gone unnoticed, and he has yet to have a long-term, successful relationship with a woman.

Buck's in his early 30s, and while he hasn't had a multiple-year-long relationship, I think dating Taylor for a year probably was pretty significant, and he probably would have dated Abby for quite a while if she hadn't ghosted him after her mother's death.
