Che and Jost named Co-Head Writers.

That's a surprise.  The political sketches this season so far have been lacking. Maybe this is an attempt to fix that?

Two female writers, Fran Gillespie and Sudi Green, have also been promoted to "writing supervisors" (which is what Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider were before they became head writers).  Both are relatively new to writing for the show, having only been at SNL since 2015.

Green was the woman who stood up to ask a question in James Franco's monologue. I believe she was one of the co-writers of "Welcome to Hell", so her writing definitely seems to be in line with the sort of stuff Kelly & Schneider were doing when they were on the show.

Angela was in this one, too. And Peter still has his job.

I'm pretty sure I read (in TV Guide, I think) that this was the last episode Carrie Fisher recorded before she passed away.

I'm trying to think of some potential January hosts, especially since we'll be in the thick of awards season - usually at least one or two potential Oscar nominees makes a stop at SNL. We already got Franco and Saorise, but I'm thinking we could see Armie Hammer (who is surprisingly funny), possibly Jordan Peele, and I'm doubling down on my guess for either Hugh Jackman or Margot Robbie.

For the past two years, they have led off January with hosts from the respective Star Wars films in release(Adam Driver, Felicity Jones). So maybe Daisy Ridley or John Boyega this year? As a wild card, I'll even throw Laura Dern out there. She seems to be getting a lot of press for it.

I'm also thinking the February 3rd date would be good for Chadwick Boseman, with Black Panther coming.

I'd say that either Daisy Ridley or John Boyega for the first show back in January is a really good guess.

It's odd in that you're right that they usually try to have Golden Globe nominees/Oscar hopefuls host around this time, but a lot of them have either just hosted or have done so fairly recently. Saoirse and Franco have already hosted, and both Margot Robbie and Emma Stone (nominated for "Battle of the Sexes") just hosted last season.

I actually think Tom Hanks would be a good host for the February show (the last show before a month-long break, and their last chance really to have an Oscar nominee host before the Oscars. I would think March 3rd everyone that's going to go there will be busy actually preparing for the Oscars- they take place the following day on the 4th). But Hanks also took a 10-year hiatus between hosting stints- would be quite a jump from not hosting for 10 years to doing in twice in the space of less than a year and a half.)

The cold open could have been cute if they had given the poor kids sufficient practice.

The version of the episode that's on Hulu was apparently taken from dress, as it features all the kids getting through their lines fine and is a lot more entertaining to watch.

Some of the lines that were missed were pretty funny, like one of the little girls saying to Kate "Classic libtard response". The joke about "I'd like a Barbie...that is, if the Feminazis will still let me have that anymore!" was also delivered a lot more cleanly and funnier in the dress version.

So I'm not sure what happened when they did the sketch live, I think it was all the same kids...maybe they didn't actually memorize their lines and were trying to rely on the cue cards and choked when it came time to do it on air.

  5. I just remembered that in the monologue Seth Rogen said he's only hosted twice, when in fact he's hosted 3 times. Obviously this was a slip-up on the part of whoever wrote the monologue, but you'd figure Seth would be able to remember how many times he's hosted (then again, weed...)

I’m with you, I didn’t like the show at all. I was amused by Scrudge but that is it. And the harassment sketch left a bad taste in my mouth to the extent it suggests that women are inconsistent and fickle about what is harassment.

I thought the joke was going to be that Kenan's character was going to be the one who all the women think is disgusting, and then (handsomer) James Franco comes on and they forgive the harrassment in his case. That idea would probably work better with a more traditionally hunky host like Chris Hemsworth or somebody though.

Now that I think about this, they did this when Tom Brady hosted with the "Sexual Harrassment And You" short film. "How to avoid being accused of harassment...Rule 1, be attractive; Rule 2, don't be unattractive."

I agree that the sketch as it was didn't end up making a whole amount of sense.

  7. Yes, this seemed like a weird way for them to introduce a new cast member (Null has done other things here and there in sketches, and he actually cowrote the "Floribama Shore" parody in this episode, but this was the first sketch where he really played a central role).

It seemed like when the sketch started that the joke was supposed to be him coming into the room and zinging everyone with jokes and being an obnoxious class clown, so for the first 3 minutes to be met with COMPLETE silence was definitely odd. It just seemed like a stand-up comedian bombing, and not in an obvious, Bruce Chandling kind of way.

I was really wondering what was happening, and then thankfully the turn happened and the sketch made more sense, but yeah, to give someone purposely bad material and then throw them out there when the audience has zero knowledge of who they are or built-in goodwill towards them was a risk.

  8. For those that are interested, the correct order to watch the episodes would be:

    1) Pilot

    2) Haunted Hayride

    3) Whispers

    4) Bee-Mo (This was undoubtedly intended to be the Halloween episode. It ended up airing on Oct. 8th for some stupid reason)

    5) Lockdown

    6) Sam

    7) The Machine

    8) Ghost Studz

The initial order was for 10 episodes, so there's still 2 more episodes of the initial order that will be shown in January before the "new" episodes begin (the ones produced by new EP Paul Lieberstein).

To be honest, I got out of the habit of watching this show once I realized it was being shown wildly out of order. I think I'm gonna go back and watch them in this order now to see if I like the show any better.

I think you're talking about the sketch where David Alan Grier played Brian Gumbel back in 1995.

The sketch I'm talking about is from when Tina Fey hosted in 2010.  Tina played Lindsay Lohan's mom Dina in the sketch.

I remember watching it thinking about how similar it was to the other sketch you're talking about; it was basically the same premise.

I wonder who's going to play Matt Lauer? Beck?

I wonder if they will be willing (or if NBC will let them) go after one of their own (I mean, they did mention Al Franken last week, but just on Update- they didn't do a whole sketch about him).

They did do a sketch once about Al Roker with Kenan (the joke was that Roker becomes a "thug" when the cameras are off), but it was fairly benign.

The only person to play Lauer on the show ever was Seth (in a sketch I don't really remember). Of the current cast, Alex Moffat's the most similar to Seth.

The continuity was kind of weird with Jimmy still with them and talking to Mickey after The Homecoming, but I think Fox screwed up the episode order or something.

Yeah, this is weird. Two episodes were flipped, but it doesn't seem to have affected much.

"The Homecoming" was episode 206 in production order, and "The Matriarch" was episode 207.

I'm kind of blanking on whether Jimmy was with them when they visited the great grandmother in "The Matriarch". He's credited with being in the episode, so I guess he was? I don't remember him figuring into the plot much.

At any rate, episode number 208 is missing from the schedule. Perhaps they're saving it for next year? If so, then the ending of "The Homecoming" doesn't seem to have gotten much of a resolution. "The Teacher" was 209.

The description for next week's episode (210) includes the line

    Spoiler

Mickey and Jimmy re-examine their relationship

so maybe they're going to pick up this storyline then.

  12. Without much of a chance now of Louis CK joining the five-timers club, there aren't really that many eligible people who could realistically join any time soon. Lindsay Lohan has hosted 4 times, but I can't ever imagine a scenario where she would host again.

Ditto Cameron Diaz. Interestingly they just reran her 2014 episode on SNL Vintage. I started wondering what had happened to her, then I looked her up on IMDB and realized that "Annie" is her last IMDB credit; she has done essentially nothing movie or TV-wise for about 3 years now.

Dana Carvey is also a 4-time host; I'd love it if he hosted again but I wouldn't be holding my breath.

The only 4-timer I could conceivably see becoming a 5-timer sometime soon is Jonah Hill; he isn't doing much in the way of movies but has been shooting a TV series for Netflix with Emma Stone called "Maniac". The last time he hosted, Jonah was actually promoting nothing - I think he humorously commented on the fact in his monologue- so he may be a person they just call in whenever they need a host, regardless of whether they're actually promoting anything (i.e. Melissa McCarthy).

  13. Quote

When Colin said that it was a good weekend to stay inside because it’s 20 degrees out and “everyone you’ve ever heard of is a sex monster”

I was a little surprised how willing they were to throw Louis CK under the bus so quickly. It's true that what he did was clearly wrong, but he's also hosted the show 4 times and has always seemed to be one of the hosts they enjoy having there the most. This is the first time I can remember a "friend of the show" getting into a scandal like this; was kinda surprised when they didn't hold back on condemning him harshly (I'm assuming Cecily wrote her Update piece).

Russell leering at underage girls.  Gross, Russell.  You have issues, to say the very, very least.

His immediate reaction to finding out the girls were arrested being "Is Deb OK?" made me laugh.

And then later he was offering to give them a bath? lol

  15. Who are the characters that Rachel is playing in the new opening to the show? I guess the blonde is supposed to be Carrie Underwood (specifically referencing the "Before He Cheats" video), and the guy in the hoodie is Eminem I guess. Who are the brunette and the (guy?) in the leather jacket and red shirt?

Given that Joseph Khan directed this intro, I would have figured he would work in Taylor Swift in there as he's directed quite a few of her videos. I guess the dark haired woman could be her; Taylor did have dark hair in her "Wildest Dreams" video (which Khan directed). Maybe they thought it would be confusing to have two blondes in there.

Oh man,  I forgot about Dr. Akopian (male).  Akopian is an Armenian name so , yeah, felt a leetle unusual for an AA woman.  Love the casting and the quick cut to the picture.   It seemed almost as if they were telling us that Michael Hyatt wasn't available in a clever way.

There were a couple of fun fake-outs like this in this episode- like expecting to see Rebecca's Dr. Akopian to then seeing her husband instead. Like right after the scene where Rebecca was explaining her plan about the cupcakes, they cut to White Josh feeding Daryl something that smelled weird that was kind of chocolatey-looking. Also, Paula's husband saying "Ok, let me get ready to strap this thing on..", then him walking over to the lie detector machine. It seemed like they were having fun leading you down the wrong path with some of the dialogue and transitions between scenes.

  17. This week would be the perfect time for Taran Killam to make a cameo and do his (great) Eminem impression. I wonder what the relationship between him and the show is now though- it doesn't seem like he left the show willingly, and there may still be bad blood between Lorne and him about that.

  18. I noticed that SNL's Twitter account followed Josh Gad recently. He had some complimentary things to say about last week's episode on Twitter, particularly the cold open and Update, so it may just be because of that. But he's also in "Murder on the Orient Express" which comes out November 10th. Plus he's comedic, good with singing and dancing, etc;  I think he'd be a pretty good host.

I am guessing with all the news coming out about Ben Affleck today (plus his rough personal life in general as of late) he will probably not be hosting this season to promote Justice League. A shame because he's always been an enjoyable host in the past.

I had the same thoughts as you about Hemsworth; it would seem strange to have Wonder Woman and Thor host so closely to one another. And I fear if Hiddleston were to host he'd be kind of a dud as a host in the same way Benedict Cumberbatch was.

Will Ferrell would be a good choice to host the Thanksgiving episode. Taylor's CD comes out November 10th but I wonder if with all the press she will be doing for it whether she would be able to devote a whole week to hosting SNL. She will most likely be performing at the American Music Awards which are held on November 19th.

One last good choice for November would be Kristen Bell, who has two things to promote: the new "Bad Moms Christmas" movie and also The Good Place which of course would be good promotion for an NBC show.
