I'm trying to think of, other than Stefon, what John Mulaney's sketches were that he wrote. I know he wrote a lot (and ended up with an Emmy for writing the Anniversary special), but I'm completely blanking on what some of his recurring sketches were.

Mulaney wrote a lot as a team with Marika Sawyer and Simon Rich during his time at SNL. Some of the sketches I know they wrote together:

.the "Family Feud" parody with the Osmond family vs. John Phillips and his family

.the "Rocket Dog" sketch with Tracy Morgan

.the "Judy Blume" sketch with John Malkovich as a weird teenage girl at a sleepover

.the sketch with Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake as their ancestors at Ellis Island

One of my favorite sketches Mulaney wrote was an "Of Mice and Men" parody with Bobby Moynihan as Lenny. That's very much in the vein of one of his stand-up bits, how Lenny suddenly becomes hyper-aware of everything that's going on  ("Oh, because I couldn't possibly be as smart as you, right- OH WAIT, YOU'RE A RANCHHAND".

Mulaney also wrote a lot with Bill- they created the Vincent Price holiday special sketches, and they continue to work together a lot on "Documentary Now".

Aidy B: I always love glimpses into backstage, including that sketch board (Wakanda Forever was the only one that made it in).

"R. Kelly" was on there too, because I remember seeing that and thinking "Why would they do a sketch about R. Kelly?" Even after seeing the sketch, I still don't know why!

I also noticed "Sesame Street" on there as a sketch, I guess that's something that got cut.

ew. ick. I actually had to change the channel during the whole Carol/Tandy beginning scene.  Just. couldn't. watch.  They really take cringeworthy to a whole new level.

Everything involving Tandy and Carol having sex in this episode was somehow MORE disturbing than the entire Fred Armisen as a cannibal storyline!

  4. Tracy Morgan's scheduled on Fallon's show Monday night to promote his new TBS series "The Last O.G.", which premieres Tuesday the 3rd.

I wonder if he will just make a cameo on next week's episode, or if he might conceivably host the Apr. 14th episode to promote his new show.

  5. I really thought this was going to be the last season of this show, but clearly with the way they ended the episode they are expecting a pickup for next season.

Has anything official been announced yet?

Wait... a different person played her in the pilot? Did that pilot air or did they re-shoot it?

They reshot it. I think around the time the show was announced as being picked up, Bayer was filming a movie for Netflix called "Ibiza" and probably wasn't available to do the series.

Stef, Mary, and Michelle add incredibly little to the show overall.

Every time I watch the show I can't help picturing Vanessa Bayer in the role of Michelle (she played her in the original pilot, and she and Mike O'Brien know each other from SNL of course). The way the character is written and even the way she delivers her lines makes me think it was probably written with Bayer in mind. Similarly, I think Mary was probably written with Mary Sohn in mind (she's a Second City veteran from Chicago like O'Brien, and her character's name is "Mary").

No idea who gets the other April slot. Nobody is jumping out at me.

There has been a lot of shuffling around of movie release dates lately. The Avengers movie is now coming out on April 27th, so conceivably they could have someone from Infinity War host the April 14th episode (Then again, maybe Chadwick Boseman IS their host from Infinity War!)

There's also Amy Schumer's "I Feel Pretty" coming out on Apr. 20th. She's not the big star she was fresh off the success of "Trainwreck", but she seemed to have a good time the first time she hosted.

Can they just kill off Tandy already ?

Considering Forte is the creator of the show, probably not.

    "Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Berg"

    "Burr"

"You need a jacket there, buddy?"

Come on, that was pretty funny :)

It had some amusing lines. but there seemed to be a lot of filler -- car drives up a long driveway, for example.

I think this was probably intentional- making fun of the slow, languorous pace of some of these '70s detective shows. TV was really like that before MTV changed everything in the '80s.

  11. Is this show cancelled? It was originally scheduled to return on FOX on Sunday the 18th, but it looks like FOX has changed its mind and is now going to be airing the back half of the fifth season of "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" on Sunday nights between The Simpsons and Family Guy instead.

I wouldn't imagine FOX would go through the trouble of hiring a new show runner for the show and filming new episodes if they're not going to air them sometime, but this doesn't look good for the future of the show.

I didn't get it at first, but once I did, I howled. And when Willy said later on, "I'm NOT Florida Man!" - just too funny.

What pushed this joke to an extra level was Darius's "See? I told you!" facial expression to Earn afterwards.

  13. This was confusing- in this episode Jack acted like he had never met Paula Pell's character, like he was being introduced to her for the first time.

Also, the introduction of the new black student was kind of abrupt- he just kind of showed up without any explanation.

To make matters worse, they flipped the order of these 2 episodes. I guess it made more sense to lead with episode 4 first- I actually thought it was the strongest episode yet. The rivalry between Jack and the student council kid had kind of a "Rushmore" quality to it.

your mouth looks like what people assume my mouth looks like. Stormare is great.

"I just need to speak to Nichole for a second and give her my...recipe for queso"

(Cut to next scene) ""Kay, so what I need you to do here..."

Haha, a very Modern Family punny kind of a joke. You can feel the influence of Steven Levitan from Modern Family here too.

Televised order numbers is not the same as production order numbers many shows show eps out of production order don't care to research it but if this wasnt filmed later this show has many more issues than not being funny.

Right, I was just saying that the episode airing at 8:30 this Thursday is production number 104, and the one at 9:30 is production number 103 (which has already been available online for a while).

I generally find it makes more sense when you watch shows in production order, but not always. Although I see 103 has Paula Pell in it again.

It was the plot of the series finale of Law and Order!

This episode felt like it was shown out of order.

Nope, although the next two episodes this Thursday are episodes 104 and 103, just shown in the incorrect order for some reason.

The actress who played the pants-crapping teacher - that character was played by Vanessa Bayer in the pilot. I guess for whatever reason Bayer wasn't available to do the series when the show got picked up- maybe because she was filming a movie at the time. But I couldn't help imagining her in the role, especially in this episode- it's the kind of mousy, eager to please, but willing to put up with abuse from the other two teachers character that you can see having been written with Bayer in mind.

Except the question was about a sex position/technique called "baking a cake." So if you end up "covered in something" as a result of "baking a cake" it's obviously going to be a cake-related euphemism for semen.

Yeah, I sometimes wonder if these contestants understand how game shows work. They didn't just throw "cake baking" into the question for no reason! Why would you just come (sorry) right out and say a word that a) you know is going to get bleeped on TV and b) isn't clever in any way?

  18. That joke about the "pretentious orphan"- "Do you have any idea who my father is?" That's a funny idea for a joke, but really, an "orphan" is not necessarily someone who doesn't know who their birth parents are. It could just be someone whose parents have died.

I think what the joke is getting at is, a person who's been adopted who never knew their parents- but there isn't a one-word name for that I guess.

Why not save that ad for a future episode?

It actually was cut previously from the Jessica Chastain episode. They went to the (rather unusual) trouble of re-shooting it with Portman instead of Chastain, and then it ended up getting cut AGAIN. Julio Torres just can't win.

  20. At some point, did they replace the actor who plays Jody(?), the Juggalo guy who Chip helped get a job at Arby's? I remember the original guy being a really skinny guy, not the heavyset actor who's playing him now.
