  1. "Secret Word" I actually wouldn't mind seeing again, because it's been a really long time since the last one of those (2012). The Californians, Lawrence Welk, and Target Lady were all done the last time she hosted and I feel like they've been done to death. Garth & Kat I will legit fast forward through if they do that again.

Actually, since it's a Thanksgiving show, maybe they will do the Vogelchecks? (the family that kisses each other all the time) That would require cameos by Fred, Bill, Andy and (ideally) Paul Rudd though. Might be asking a bit much (although they did it when Andy Samberg hosted the season 39 finale).

This probably depends on who's in NY.  Armisen is a lock.  Maya is a lock.  Jsuds, Hader, and Forte prolly not but maaaaybe.  Perhaps one of those.

Fred actually has not been on Seth Meyers' show this week, implying that he's somewhere else rather than NY (perhaps filming "Portlandia"?) I'm sure he can probably make the trip to cameo on SNL though if they want to do "The Californians" yet again.

Sudeikis is actually booked on "The Tonight Show" next Monday, so there's a good chance he might be appearing this weekend as well.

By the way, did Chris Rock write (or help write) that first sketch?

The election night sketch was written by Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock along with Neal Brennan (co-creator of "Chappelle's Show"), Bryan Tucker (also at one time a "Chappelle's Show" writer), and Colin Jost.

I echo what some people said about hoping that they never replace Alec as Trump. Damn, would that piss Trump off or what? They should do sketches about everyone else, though. Melania. The three older spawn running his company into the ground without him (please oh please!).

I think as a way of replacing "The Miley Cyrus Show", they should have Vanessa do "The Tiffany Trump Show" (since Vanessa and Miley and Tiffany all kinda resemble each other). Maybe have the premise of it be that Tiffany interviews other members of famous families who are ignored and overlooked, like Frank Stallone or Dave Franco or Casey Affleck.

I thought her appearance as Tiffany in "Melaniade" was kinda endearing and would like to see her continue to play her.

In the second song, I couldn't decide if Solange's vocal track was turned down too much or if she just couldn't hit the lower notes. Seems like it might be a combination of the two. I don't need singers to always be able to wail if they bring something else to the table, but I don't know why for a huge national platform like this she'd choose a song with notes she struggles to reach.

Was Bobby even in the building? I don't think he was in any sketches and I don't think I saw him at good nights. Feels like he hasn't been on much this season.

Bobby and Pete were both hugging the bronze eagle statue from the "Mr. Shaw" sketch during the goodnights.

Ricky Diamonds: Are they eventually going to recognize Gemma or something?

Lol, this is a really good point. This has always bothered me about certain recurring sketches. I think the two most blatant ones in recent years were the "sexy" character that Kristen Wiig played- where it was always the same guys who were at first excited and then disgusted to meet Kristen's character and find out she wasn't sexy. The other one was the "Blizzard Man" sketch with Andy Samberg- every time Kenan's studio booth guy is appalled by Samberg's horrible rapping, even though he's met him like 8 times already.

I guess we have to assume the characters got hit on the head and developed amnesia between sketches.

I loved Manny's "So I've been carrying this red herring around for nothing?"

Even though the show has been on for too long and should really end after this season, the writers still throw in really clever jokes like this (and the devil/"Soul" thing). Some of the writers I believe worked on Arrested Development so they really handle the wordplay and puns well.

  8. What's been going on with Comedy Central's scheduling lately? I set the DVR for the correct time and even add 3 minutes onto the end of it and I still keep getting the FTW segment cut off (almost entirely on last night's show). I understand during debate weeks sometimes The Daily Show ran long but why do I keep getting like 8-10 minutes of The Daily Show whenever I try to record @midnight?

  9. A good reason why this episode was lighter in tone than the others (which I don't think anyone has mentioned yet) is that it was written by Rashida Jones and Mike Schur.  I believe Charlie Brooker came up with the story idea and then Jones and Schur wrote the actual script.

  10. That is hilarious that Shearer wrote this episode. He has been doing that great Tom Brokaw impression since at least the early '80s. I remember a sketch he did during one of his tenures on SNL where he played Brokaw, who was angry that someone was apparently "sneaking more L's" into his copy to trip him up during the newscast.

I'm not a fan of this new bit where they bring someone in. My guess is it gives the writers something else to write besides quiz show-style answers.

I like it! It gives the show a little more of a sketch-like feel, instead of just being a game show. I've liked all the characters so far, but James Adomian as the vaping guy was definitely the best.

  12. Yeah, I think with this episode more than any of them it really would depend on you having seen "Stop Making Sense" for you to really appreciate the episode. The humor was in how closely they mimicked the original and especially the style of Talking Heads' music. There were other '80s/new-wave sort of parodies in there as well; Hader's song sounded more like Devo to me and "Flashing Lights" had kind of a Cars feel. And the talk-singing song that Fred did was Tom Waits for some reason.

The music's pretty nice to listen to on its own actually. The one song they didn't include was the song supposedly written by Maya's character, which is actually a pre-existing song written by Matthew Sweet.

  13. I like how each episode the last few weeks has had a different tone. The Justin Bieber one was like some weird dreamlike David Lynch film, the episode last week was ultra-realistic, "Girls"-type awkwardness (except for the kid in whiteface at the end), and this episode was ridiculous, like Glover was trying to make a silly Adult Swim type parody show.  All the little details with the fake commercials and everything were great.

  14. At one point Glover said that in making Atlanta he wanted to try to make "Twin Peaks with rappers", and in this episode I could definitely sense a David Lynch influence. Charlie Kaufman-esque at times too with how surreal it was. Like Lynch's and Kaufman's movies, it had that weird dreamlike quality where things that clearly don't make sense are presented with a straight face and you accept everything as normal as if you were having a dream. Like Justin Bieber being depicted as a black kid, or just the whole plotline with Jane Adams in general. That was kind of a nightmare scenario, being stuck in this situation with someone who insists that they know you when it should be clear you're not the person they know. It reminded me a lot of Lynch's movies like "Mulholland Drive" and "Lost Highway" (I haven't seen much of Twin Peaks, but I assume it was like that too). The whole episode just had an uncomfortable, nightmare-like feel. Very odd but enjoyable episode.

Or why not line up a part time job as a security guard (Mall Cop???).

    Haha!

The older daughter's acting style is very Disney Channel show-ish. Looking at her IMDB page, I guess she's never done any kid's shows, but it seems like she should have.

People move around -- and it was a third wedding for the bride, so she may have lived other places.  Gloria was married in the U.S.  Plus, it gave the production a chance to dress up the men of the family, and a quick return home.  Much more plausible for the sister to stop by California on the way back to Columbia.

Was I mishearing things, or did Gloria say the bride was 19 and this was her third wedding? I seriously hope I misheard that or else that was a joke in pretty horrible taste :)
