  1. This whole Percival thing is so tedious. And still six episodes to go?  When you groan every time the villain appears, that’s.a sure sign they have created a bad villain. The season did manage to ruin two characters, Frank and Kevin.  They shouldn’t even try to give them a redemption arc, they are both so pathetic.  I do like the FBI chick who is an expert in both the paranormal and medical procedures.  A true renaissance woman. This show needs Hiram back.  He’d better return for the final season.

Some people might be able to do that, but not being able to stand up to a bully is totally in character for Mike Wheeler.

That's true, but my thinking was seeing someone he cared about being victimized would cause something to snap inside Mike and push him to act.  When you're the one being picked on, it can be very hard to find the courage to stand up for yourself.  But when it's not you but someone you love, that's a whole different dynamic.

The roller rink scenes were…less realistic than the Upside Down. How about you go into the circle instead of nag the DJ? Everyone’s reactions were wrong and I didn’t find El believable in the scene. And then when she came out and asked the girl to apologize? Silly. It was not a good scene.

Yes that scene was frustrating to watch.  If I was the boyfriend, I would have run straight to the guy with the video camera and smashed him over the head with it, then busted right through that circle.  It's also ridiculous that the boys all act like mean girls, following Angela around and assisting her in bullying other girls.  Really?

Even more awful is this cursed "Hopper in Russia" plot.

The frustrating part of this season is how everyone is split up all over the map.  You have half the gang still in Hawkins, the other half in LA, then roaming the southwest, Eleven in Nevada, Hopper/Joyce/Murray in Siberia and Alaska.  Hopper spending the season so far not interacting with Eleven or any of the other regulars in the cast, Jonathan moping about Nancy but who cares since they don't spend any screen time together.  It looks like some of them are about to meet Suzie for the first time, but that doesn't include Dustin.

The costuming's off this season as well -- no one was wearing all that neon crap (not to mention that hateful full-on acid-washed denim jumpsuit) at the roller rink in 1986.  It was jeans and button-downs (or band t-shirts).  Especially the jeans -- you really wouldn't want to be wearing short-shorts if you wiped out.

Yeah, and the Wheelers' mom is still dressed like it's 1982 with the headband.  the "80s" as we like to remember them really came to an end in 1985.  It went from listening to Duran Duran and Flock of Seagulls to Tracy Chapman and Sinead O'Connor.  The late 80s to me was closer to the early 90s than the early 80s.

  6. You have to admire a show that's so nutty, Veronica breaks out into a fully choreographed performance of Britney's Toxic in the middle of a shareholder meeting.

So this season we're getting nice Cheryl.  That means next season we will get psycho Cheryl again.

Betty is always talking about the evil inside her, but when are we going to get back to season 1 where she throws on a dark wig, adopts an alternate personality, and actually becomes the evil vixen we all want her to be?

Now we know how they get Archie and Veronica back together.  He's the only one she can't kill when shagging.

Now that Archie is no longer affected by paladium, can't he just crack Percival's skull like an egg now and get it over with?

I'm kind of enjoying the Percival season when he's not around.  Give the Archie gang a bunch of powers and let the hijinks ensue!

  7. Percival visiting everyone with his goon squad to demand overdue books was comical even for this show.

So Betty the FBI agent doesn't have enough law enforcement muscle to stand up to the local police force?

Veronica: "Heraldo, let's get this relationship started!"

Veronica the next day: "Heraldo who?"

Kevin is the most intentionally stupid character on this show.  Next to Alice anyway.

Mrs. Gundy: "Sorry, you're just too old for me now, Archie."

So let me get this straight.  Homeless guy knows a payphone number (glad to know they still have payphones in Riverdale) 3,000 miles away in Venice Beach, California, and calls it and immediately gets hold of the other homeless guy who had Jughead's book?  I can't even get people to pick up on my cellphone calls!

I'm starting to realize that my favorite character on this show is the mortician.  He delivers his diagnoses with such panache. "His death…sealed with a kiss!"  I want to party with this guy.

I’m so angry and disappointed. I wanted Ruth to be the only survivor of the bunch. I desperately needed to see the Byrdes either killed or in prison. Ruined. Also the episode was just plain bad. No way would Ruthie who was born ready just walk up to that car like that no gun nothing. No way.
    I feel so cheated.

Especially condsidering she had been tailed by a hitman the previous episode...

Wow, the Byrdes win.  Yay...NOT.  One happy little evil family now.  The kids suddenly embracing the drug cartel lifestyle with their soulless parents after ll the shit they have seen.  And after all the evil Wendy has committed, she has one conversation with her kids in a rehab center she faked to join to manipulate them, and she has achieved redemption.  Now she's nice and we hope she lives at the end.  Uh...NO.  And of course the accident wasn't really a hit, just a random accident.  Truck hauling cars happening to be driving on the wrong side of the road in broad daylight.  That happens all the time.

I think the idea is that she popped back to the past, changed something, and then popped to the future to see how it turned out, so she doesn't necessarily know the details. But I don't know why she didn't just stick with one of the scenarios where they won. Or maybe she did, but she didn't mention what she changed?

    Jughead died, that's the catch.

I've been leaning to the Byrdes 'getting away with it', whatever 'it' means. I want them to one up the cartel and be a criminal enterprise in the Ozarks and Chicago politics. I'm looking at the final run of the show through this lens. I mean, I see that Marty doesn't like getting 'dirty', but they are good at what they do. I'm all in on Wendy wheeling and dealing with Navarro and the FBI.

I don't.  I want to see Wendy's head on a pike down in Mexico baking in the hot sun.  Marty can go into witness protection and work at a Subway's in Sioux Falls.

  11. I thought Ruth was doomed in this episode.  99% of the time, when you know a character is about to embark on something deadly, and they focus the whole episode solely on them, and then throw in a bunch of metaphorical stuff on top of it, the character is about to bite it.

Great scene in the coffee shop with the rapper.

Loved how she plugged Javi with no hesitation, that's how it's done.

Ruth still had bullets left in her magazine, she should have plugged the rest of them.  Especially Wendy.

I guess it was nice seeing Tabitha be front and center for once and Erinn Westbrook is likable enough in the role, but this was wild because they were basically taking their normal batshit insane Riverdale stuff and trying to actually tell a sincere story about the history of racism and the fight against it.  It reminded me of last season with Archie and his PTSD/time in the military.  The message is sound and maybe the writers' hearts are in the right place, but when you put it on this show, it just becomes a tonal nightmare.  Especially when it all ends with being just a set-up to show that Percival is some kind of immortal demon (?!) and the reason the gang is getting all these powers is because they are destined to fight him.  Yeah, don't even have the time to get into all of that right now!

I get what you're saying.  I did like this episode a lot and think that Tabitha was able to carry an episode as the main character.  She's not as "Riverdale" as all the other characters, so it was easy to sort of pretend this wasn't a Riverdale episode while watching her time travel story.  This season must hold the record for the most things that Riverdale has borrowed/stolen from other shows and movies.  We have Kilgrave from Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Firestarter, Castiel from Supernatural, Superman, Annabelle.  Have I missed anything?

  13. Time to weigh in on Percival.  He is a terrible character and an awful villain.  Smug, arrogant, intolerable.  For a villain to be good or great, you have to like them on some level, or at least respect their machinations.  A good villain earns his spoils.  They are written into a plot, usually in the background early on, just doing their thing and making their moves.  Then they emerge as antagonists, having fully ingratiated themselves into the lives of the other characters, and having built their plans and schemes piece by piece.  That isn't the case with Percival.  He lands in Riverdale and in the very first episode is taking over the town.  He is given a win card with his power, and is faced with virtually no resistance.  He's like a video game character that is in God mode.  So it makes him completely uninteresting as a character.  He is a narcissistic, insufferable brat and nothing more.  What makes it worse is that his super power is stolen from Kilgrave in Jessica Jones.  So he is completely unoriginal as well.  Of course, Kilgrave was written with a level of depth that Percival barely scratches the surface of.  And David Tennant is a way better actor.

  14. NACHOOOOOO!!!  One of my favorite characters is gone.  But he went out like a champ.  Way to stick it to Hector.

Regarding the posts about Kim’s motivations, I think they have done a good job explaining through the events of the show her gradual descent to the dark side.  I read an article recently about it.  Kim has grown steadily disillusioned with how the legal system, corporate institutions, old boys networks, and life in general works, and she has always had that rebellious streak in her.

It’s been fun watching this show evolve from the Jimmy McGill Adventures, with the emphasis on Chuck and Sandpiper and other things, to full-on Breaking Bad.

Archie is Luke Cage, Jughead is Matt Murdock, Percival is Killgrave and Betty is...Iron Fist maybe, with the auras? I'm wondering now if this was deliberate or just a coincidence.

Riverdale has a long history of shamelessly stealing every every plot trope in existence.

I do enjoy the whole Cheryl/Abigail gothic horror story.  The Blossoms have always inhabited this weird world in their corner of Riverdale.  If Riverdale was Disneyland, they would be the ones living in the Haunted Mansion.

Riverdale, the next Atlantic City... with their two blackjack tables and six slot machines.

Penelope scared the hell out of me.

Riverdale the worst town?  Come on, it would be a vacation destination in some states!  :D

  16. Susie continues to be the funniest person on the show. The job interviews were golden.

Part of the problem was that when Reggie told Midge to talk about Shy, Reggie did not know that Midge was aware that Shy was homosexual, and was not prepared for nor expecting the kind of jokes she would tell.

I think Reggie did know.  He was jealous of Midge being so close to Shy and wanted to get rid of her.  He deliberately sabotaged her.  He then leaked the story that she was fired to the press before she arrived at the airport so she would be humiliated.

Glad they got closure on the Shy Baldwin arc.  Now they can move on to other things.

I thought Shy was based on Harry Belafonte, but since Harry shows up at Shy's wedding, I'm thinking Johnny Mathis, who is gay.  They even kind of look the same.

  17. I found it ironic that Javi shot Darlene through the heart after she just had a heart attack.  It was sure a bad week for Darlene's heart!

When Ruth was going nuclear on the Byrde's, I was picturing the scene from Scanners where the guy's head explodes.

No, I can't mourn poor innocent Wyatt.  The guy was weak as a kitten and dumb as a brick.  Darwin sorted him out.

"Nah we don't want to take down the drug cartel, it will only be replaced by another drug cartel.  And that means more work for us!  Let's make some money instead!"

I thought Darlene was wearing the most plot armor on this show, but that distinction goes to Marty and Wendy.  How many fucked-up deals have they done between Omar, Javi, and the FBI already?  I think every cartel house in Mexico has posters of them on the wall by this point.

Jasmine was going overboard with the ongoing reaction. I suspect that she was more angry about Gino reaching out to his ex than the pictures being circulated. She's proved herself to be extremely over-the-top jealous with Gino and other women prior to this, and this scenario fit the bill. She was vicious in her remarks to Gino; this stuff will stay with him for a long while. It bugged me though that Gino just sat on the bed, looking up at her with his sad puppy dog guilty eyes, playing with his fingers and not saying much. Jasmine was essentially fighting with herself while Gino played mute.

I don't care what Jasmine does to Gino.  I'm sick and tired of watching these pitiful half-men with hot women and actually believing the hot woman is interested in them.  From Big Ed to this guy, it has become a running joke on this show.  And for the love of God, get to a gym.  Same with Mike.  These guys don't even try.  Gino doesn't even know how to hug a woman, he looks like a fiddler crab when doing it.  There must be some confident and good looking older guys out there the show could find instead of this constant parade of dorky limp noodled losers, sheesh.

  19. John Boy needs to take Wendy to the wood shed.

Ruth continues to be a badass.  Now she can add paramedic to her resume.

I worry about Maya making it out of this season alive having been exposed to both Navarro and Javi.

Marty always comes up with the backup plan.  Now he will get the heroin from Ruth for the Big Pharma chick.  Of course, that makes him Javi's enemy now.  What could possibly go wrong?

Wendy Byrde continues to cement her reputation as the most loathsome female character I have seen since Claire Underwood in House of Cards.

  20. And Wendy doubles down to defend her title as the most loathsome television character ever created.

I just finished binging Deadwood.  Al Swearengen was by every definition a bad man, and I love him to death.  Wendy Byrd I want to throw into a wood chipper while still alive.

Ten bucks that Darlene or one of her crew will kill Cartel Nephew Guy, in some stupidly improbable scenario.
