  1. Well, shit.  By the end, I was really rooting for Tanya!  At least she got a bit of revenge killing off most of the guys on the boat before she died.  And thanks a bunch Portia for not even trying to call the cops or anything for Tanya, after Jack let her go.  I guess she either thought Tanya would get back to the hotel somehow, or she really took Jack's advice to heart, and thus basically sacrificed Tanya to escape Sicily.

Albie is a big dummy, getting played by Lucia big time, but at least he loves his dad again now?  And he finally has Portia interested in him?  I suppose that counts as a happy ending, for this weird show.

We never really learned what makes Ethan tick, so having him go from completely passive to homicidally angry and jealous to finally turned on by his wife -  in the span of a few days - was unconvincing for me.  I'm not even sure we learned much about Harper and what her deal is.  Kinda shocking that story fell so flat, since Aubrey Plaza was one of the big draws for this season.  Daphne ended up being the most interesting of that foursome.

  2. Tanya's "get your shit together" speech was actually quite touching and showed she does have some insight into her own issues.  Now if only she would take her own advice!!  How did she have no reaction to seeing the photo of Quentin and Greg??  I guess she was just too high on drugs ... "I love your giant pupils"  Hee!

Nice to see Portia starting to realize an exciting adventure with an unpredictable guy isn't all it's cracked up to be ... and that she can be smart and serious when she finally sees the red flags.  I mean, Jack was basically just telling her all the red flags while very drunk, but still.

I felt badly for Bert.  I think he took it so hard about the Sicilian relatives because he's lost his wife, his son's family is falling apart, his health is failing, and this was something he was looking forward to.  The actor also does a great job.

I feel like I missed a scene in the Lucia story somehow.  I really don't think she has a pimp, but her setting up and running this con on Albie also seems kind of out of character?

I cannot with the Valentina subplot.  I'm happy that she had fun hooking up with Mia after a life time of (apparently) repressing her desires.  I do not buy that she would go so far out on a limb flirting with one of her employees and getting her hopes up when it was clear all along Isabella and Rocco were flirting with each other.

The Ethan / Harper stuff has just gone off the rails for me.  Both characters are too underdeveloped for me to get invested in them obsessing over cheating that never happened.  It's just uninteresting at this point.

  3. Ethan is manipulative and awful, really.  "You know I never lie to you" he says, right after lying to her for 24 hours straight.  He's basically the Daphne in his marriage ... without being at all fun to be around.

The Harper / Ethan marriage is like the passive aggressive Olympics.

Lucia has an unlimited amount of clothing and shoes in that bag.  It's the Mary Poppins tote, but for hookers.

I loved Tanya's lilac dress -- first outfit of hers I've coveted!

"Have a nice life!"  Ugh, Portia ... but my annoyance with her is tempered by the fact that I was probably just as aggravating as a slightly depressed twenty something, and unsure of how to let a guy down easy.

I felt bad for Dominic when he walked on the beach.  He knows he's lost companionship and his once-happy family because of his compulsions.  The Bert / Dominic conversation at dinner was one of the best scenes in this series.

The Valentina plot is not working for me at all.

  4. Dominic needs to accept his marriage is over and just hope his estranged wife stops hating him and the kids forgive him.

Ethan and Harper are both maddeningly passive.  Harper should've just confronted Ethan in the moment rather than assuming.  I think Harper senses Ethan's general ambivalence and thus needs the reassurance that other couples aren't better than them, but these two still don't communicate well.

Portia's time in Sicily has been "soul crushing"?  Really, Portia?  Yes, Tanya is difficult, but so far Portia's gotten a paid trip to Sicily, gotten free sight-seeing tours with Albie's family, and had at least 50% of her time to do as she pleases.

I don't trust Quentin, getting Tanya to tell him her entire life story and that she's alone at the resort with only her clueless assistant.

I don't know why Mia thought a hotel lounge singer was going to help her with her career.  This is not a knock on working musicians, but how does she think he'll be able to help her?

"I put on fresh underwear for ya."  Um, sexy, I guess?  LOL.

  5. I would so go on a tour of Godfather filming sites!  That sounds so fun!  As messed up as the Bert / Dominic dynamic is, they at least go out and do interesting tourist stuff.  LOL that they have a mannequin in a car to commemorate the Godfather explosion scene.

Ethan was already being a jerk in the beginning of the episode.  I felt bad for Harper getting all gussied up in the yellow silk number for morning sex and he didn't even notice.  He's not exactly helping her feel more relaxed!  And Harper tried to warn him Cameron wanted something out of him ...

I find Valentina kind of amusing, but this season could really use Armond's manic energy.

I think poor Portia is depressed, given her feeling that everything is "boring" and the world less enjoyable than she once thought.

Daphne being perfectly comfortable with appearing shallow and her shallow life - but actually having a lot of deep thoughts about things - is one of the more interesting parts of this season.

  6. I'm glad Portia got out of the room and is enjoying herself!  Albie talking about his dad's history of cheating and his determination to be different was an interesting scene.  And it sounds like Dominic is repeating some of his own dad's habits.

This hotel sure has thin walls - what the heck?!

So has Greg been scamming Tanya this whole time??  Was the terminal illness story in Season 1 a big lie?  Good thing she got a pre-nup, apparently.

Whatever point they're making with the two couples, I wish they'd get to it a bit faster.  Harper is kind of a downer.  Cameron is being creepy.  Is this gonna go anywhere?

  7. Disappointing to see that Tanya has somehow managed to regress as a person ... and that Greg turned out to be a jerk.

What in the world is happening with Portia's wardrobe?  LOL.

The two couples - not sure what to make of them yet.  I do know I want all of Harper's clothing so far.

Dominic is clearly a mess.  And his ex ... clearly despises him!  Yikes, that phone call.

Mia is getting some bad advice from her friend Lucia.  That bar scene was another yikes.

Also, just a lawyer nitpick, but ... when Cameron called them "deeepos"  I giggled / cringed a little.  Even the abbreviation for "depositions" isn't pronounced like that.

  8. OMG HBO, we could probably figure out what Armond was doing in that suitcase without ... um ... making it quite so obvious.  LOL.

It must be the wonderful actor, because I felt for Armond the whole time even as he clearly created increasingly insane problems for himself and everyone else.

Poor Belinda, although at least by the end she learned to put up some boundaries with these needy guests.

Paula is a damn idiot, and so is Kai for going along with her terrible plan.  I guess she's going to have to live the rest of her life knowing she helped Kai ruin his life ... though she seems to be getting over it fairly quickly.  She's kidding herself if she thinks she's that much less selfish and spoiled than Olivia.

Good for Quinn, though he's gonna have to start working at the resort to support himself probably!  Unless Nicole and Mark cave and send him money (which they probably will, lol).  I was weirdly happy to see Nicole and Mark improve their marriage even though they're both fairly annoying.  Well, I just love Connie Britton, so I wanted her character to be happy.

Rachel ... one step forward, two steps back with this girl.  Hopefully she figures out a career before Shane inevitably starts cheating on her and the marriage finally blows up!

  9. Before I start nitpicking, let me just say the acting, across the board, was fantastic (special shout out to the kid playing Elliot - that is not an easy role to bring to life or make sympathetic, especially for  child actor, and by the end I felt for him).  As were the costumes and visuals.

Maybe just personal preference, but I was really invested in the 1899 stories of the characters, and wanted to spend more time with all of them and their backstories and see how their lives turned out (though knowing some would probably die on the ship) ... so finding out it was a simulation and we'll never find out who makes it to America to start a new life was ... disappointing.  I would've liked less time with people crawling through hatches and more time with Tove, Ling Yi, Olek, Jerome, Clemence, Angel, Ramiro, and even that awful lady who apparently ran her own pimp-out-geishas business (how did that become her life?).

Also ... what oddly specific characters for a bunch of people on a spaceship in 2099 - stories that are all traumatic and rooted in the highly restrictive, discriminatory world of 1899.

(And how'd you like to get stuck playing Lucien in the simulation over and over - "ok, you betrayed your friend horribly, you whine a lot, you have seizures, and you disappoint your new wife in bed regularly -- go!"  "...um ... how long are we doing this for??")

And did my brain glitch, or did we get none of Olek's backstory except for two seconds of seeing his Statue of Liberty picture in the snow next to a blood trail?

@iMonrey raises an interesting idea - maybe they're in neither 1899 nor 2099.  Some of the music choices (late 60s and 70s), as well as the clunky-looking technology and the 70s-ish look of Maura's bedroom with her husband and the father's office ... could it be people trying to imagine the tech of the future while being trapped in some kind of mental experiment or group hypnosis?  Also, for a bunch of people in 2099, they have a lot of emotional connection to the idea of life in an unfair world where women have no rights or independence and the LGBTQ characters are all forced to hide their lives.

  10. What I really liked about those scenes was how well they highlighted why Ani held it all in for so long — she knew the reaction would be “well, sorry that happened to you, but it’s really inconvenient for you to bring this up  — he’s a hero now and has a family!”

And she was finally ready to fight back against people trying to shame her and minimize  what was done to her.

  11. I ... have a lot of conflicting feelings about this movie.

There's been some controversy because people feel like Netflix should've slapped a warning on the movie -- and I tend to agree, I think people are entitled to know there are multiple topics in this movie that could really catch off guard and upset someone.

It was well-acted across the board.  Mila Kunis is great.  I do like the overall psychological study of a woman who has purposely created this glamorous, successful, and all-about-appearances shell while inside she's seething with rage, resentment, and untreated trauma ... and I ended up liking and understanding her.

But I kinda feel like the plot is so much that it detracts from the character study.  For instance, the main character (Ani) has one friend (a fairly minor character) that she apparently has told everything to, while hiding huge parts of herself from her fiancé, her mother, her boss, etc.  How did Ani come to trust this one woman after a lifetime of learning not to fully trust anyone else?  The movie doesn't have time to tell us!  Maybe this should have been a limited series??

The plot almost ... fights with itself, if that makes sense ... I know it was both based on a novel and in part inspired by trauma suffered by the book's author, so obviously the movie is just following the book's plot ... however,

    Spoiler

having a school shooting plot AND a sexual assault plot in the same movie is ... a lot.  It works in the course of the story logically and in terms of the mystery, but it's two very loaded topics at odds with each other, because some of the shooting victims were the perpetrators of the assault.

The movie has something worthwhile to say about sexual assault, and how society reacts and often fails to support the victim.  With respect to mass shootings, it's almost counterproductive (in real life, it's usually not the case that a mass shooter is targeting specific people for doing specific bad things), and I almost wish the author and movie had avoided that hot button issue.    But, again, I'm conflicted!

I don't know, what do other people think?

I recognized the producer on the right as we look at them (their left) as the producer of Marcus Lemonis show, not sure why anyone would describe them as awful, they were sent to do a job & that's what they did.

They were snickering about filming and making money off of an (admittedly dimwitted and guilty) woman getting into trouble and facing jail time.  And they basically admitted they staged a scene and pretended they had captured a "real" moment as it was happening.

  13. Only up to the episode about Elora's grandma passing, but oof this show knows how to make me cry.  Also, the episode where Bear and Daniel's dad talked during the roofing job made me cry a little.

It's been renewed for a third season, so yay!

I have a soft spot for Big, perhaps in part because I enjoyed the actor on Longmire.  The Deer Lady episode in the first season, though ... she freaked me out a little.  Can you imagine seeing that carnage in the convenience store as a kid and knowing that if she decides you turned into a "shit-ass" as an adult, she's coming for you?   Eek!

  14. It's insane to me that, after Charles Vallow reports Lori has gone insane and may be a danger to the kids, him ending up shot to death by Lori's brother, and Lori's "eh, whatevs" reaction to said killing, and Lori almost immediately fleeing to another state with the kids ... that the cops and family still barely reacted to what was going on with Lori until it was too late to save the children.

  15. I definitely agree with the sentiments about Perez Hilton being smarmy (also why were we subjected to that hideous sweater??), and the producers of the reality show being awful.

Everyone was so terrible, I pretty much only felt bad for the burglary victims ... and the prosecutors whose case got compromised by that one officer consulting on the Bling Ring movie.

I had no sympathy for Prugo that the attorney he hired based on image alone screwed up -- Prugo didn't deserve immunity anyway.   He wasn't asking for a plea deal so he could flip on a "higher-up" or ringleader (how these things usually work), he was one of the two equal leaders of this crime ring!  He wanted immunity for trying to blame his behavior on his equal partner in crime and for turning on a bunch of people who'd helped on one or two of his burglaries.

If Neiers hadn't been a complete idiot, she actually would've been better positioned to "flip" and get an immunity deal.

Much like the awful Inventing Anna series, they tried to put some "actually, isn't all of society and our culture to blame?" spin on it at the end.  And ... no.  Nope, these are all just greedy, shallow people who want sympathy because it was just so traumatic getting caught stealing millions worth of other people's property.

ETA: Prugo is actually possibly sociopathic -- he matter of factly talked about sending the Lopez guy in to steal all of Paris Hilton's jewelry, laughing that he didn't care if Lopez got caught.  And he clearly was happy to throw his "friend" Rachel under the bus and back that bus over her a bunch of times

  16. I feel like my brain needs a shower after watching that.  All of these people are delusional and horrifyingly shallow.

Also ... astoundingly stupid.  In what universe did they think they'd never get caught?  In what universe did Alexis think identifying Nick to the police wouldn't somehow end up with her being nabbed, too?  Nick caring about his attorney's looks 🙄

I can't believe he stashed the stolen goods at his grandma's property.  WTF LOL.

Whatever else I might think of the celebrities who were victimized here, I feel badly for them in this case.  Nobody deserves that, and especially the ones who had family heirlooms and things of sentimental value taken.

  17. Of all the implausible, ridiculous things about this series, for some reason it bothered me most in this episode that there were two horses, conveniently fully tacked up, just waiting to be ridden and exactly where the twins needed them.

How did the cops lose Leni after the deputy baited her with the stolen evidence?   Stupid.

    Charlie is nuts.

I love how neither of these ladies gave a shit about the fact that Mattie, Claudia and Jack are all now homeless.  They didn't even try to stop the fire or call the fire department.

"Do you think Jack will get Mattie??"  Uh ... yeah, Leni.  Yes, I think you're not getting custody of your kid now.  Leni really is delusional, lol.

  18. I'm at the point of finding both sisters exhausting.  "So of course, we had to switch for a while and live each other's lives, but it's Leni's/Gina's fault that -- "   Let me stop you right there, lady.  None of this was ever acceptable or an actual solution to any problem.

Jack definitely has the brains of a dust bunny.  Not only never realizing what was going on, but thinking the solution to his financial solutions was hiding / babysitting / whatever the hell he was doing with the stolen horse.

  19. I'm lost with the stolen horse side plot.  The thing with selling ketamine ... whatever Gina was doing with Dylan ... now the horse thing ... on top of all the other craziness.  It's a lot.

Leni acts like she wants to save "the family", well the best thing she can do for the family, which has already fallen apart completely, is to be totally honest and see about putting it back together.

Leni wants to keep up relationships -- and keep having sex with! -- with both husbands.  She acts like she has some noble goal here, but she really just wants to keep dabbling in both lives with these poor unsuspecting men.  Hilariously, Gina wants to abandon everyone for that other awful guy.

Have these ladies considered getting some damn therapy??

  21. @JMO -- yeah, I really liked the Jake character.  He was very handsome, but also very realistic without being boring.  Also, one of the few Jewish characters they've had on the show (and one of the few to ever thoughtfully discuss their views on religion).

And I definitely agree that in the '80s and '90s, there was far more variety in character interactions, social classes, relationships, family dynamics, and storylines (I do have to note racial diversity in the cast was, to put it mildly, extremely disappointing for most of that period ... though I'm not sure it's ever gotten much better).   Old school Port Charles seemed like a place that could actually exist ... and when something dangerous happened in this normal-looking mid-sized city with believable well-rounded characters, it was actually more thrilling and suspenseful.

@Jan Spears -- Heather and her mother Alice had a very interesting and dysfunctional relationship.  I enjoyed their arguments, which sometimes made you wonder how and why Heather turned out that way.  Alice was another believable "normal" character who could really surprise the audience at times.

As for Ice Princess ... I loved, loved, loved Alex Q in all her snobby, scheming glory.  Her shocking death was a great twist and appropriate end for her story.   And I know they felt they had to make Luke (as opposed to the actual secret agent, Robert) save the day ... but I really appreciated that they found a character-appropriate and reasonable way to do it (Luke won Mikkos' trust by sharing stories about the Spencers' poverty and pretending to agree that Mikkos would be a wonderfully benevolent dictator who cared for the poor).

@cleo -- Prometheus Disc is definitely all about the (very well done) tensions between the characters and their relationships ... because the plot is laughable.   I died laughing whenever the scientists or WSB agents would discuss how the disc was volatile and liable to spontaneously combust ... and then the next scene would be Luke hiding the thing in his shoe or shoving it in his pocket.

This is why I was so confused lol. Like why is Leni having a hard time acting like herself? I guess Gina just added some stuff to Leni's personality in that year that was new and Leni doesn't know about it.

These 2 seem kind of horrible at pretending to be each other, which makes no sense since they've been doing it for a long time and because they have that weird website they talk to every day so I'd think they'd tell each other there what's going on so that when the switch back they know what's up. It's also is hard to imagine that their father, sister, husbands, and Leni's child don't suspect anything. And yet, that Dylan guy knew right away. Please lol.

Speaking of Leni's daughter, I am assuming she's actually Gina's daughter.

I can only assume Gina is actively sabotaging Leni for some reason.

Poor Mattie, that kid is screwed.

  23. Oh shit, the cop just did the "one more thing ..." play -- she's like Columbo!  She (correctly) doesn't trust anyone in this crazy family.   Leni (who was pretending to be Gina but now is faking how to be ... herself?  'cuz she forgot after a year??  lol) is not gonna be able to keep her stories straight.

On the other hand, I'm totally hooked now, because this is the kind of insane soapy mini-series lunacy they used to show all the time when I was a kid.  How much more insane is this gonna get?  Because I am kinda here for it.
