S06.E18: The Way of the Ninja

Recommended Posts

At some point, I started feeling like the show was dumping a bunch of Asian people together for the sake of the story. I mean, how many Asian dancers were in that ballet company that just happened to be doing Madame Butterfly? Of course Jade's partner had to be Asian too so that Castle could assume he was the ninja! So when Jade's dance partner said he was Korean, not Japanese, and told Castle he was racially profiling, I laughed.

Sometimes when Castle gets a hair up his ass about how the murderer must be a cowboy or a mime or an alien, it gets annoying, but for some reason his love of ninjas was hilarious.

What I did not find amusing about this episode was the oh so cliche situation where Beckett the bride to be finds out that her formerly wild friend is now boring and bored, so of course she tells Castle she wants to make sure that they don't end up that way. And then Castle's oh so brilliant solution is to say they'll just put it in their wedding vows: they will never get bored! First of all, if all it took was saying you would never be bored to actually not be bored, there would be a lot less people in this world who were bored with their jobs, their relationships, and their lives. But secondly, this is the kind of conversation I expect from teenagers, not adults in their 30s-40s.

I love episodes where Castle gets excited about the details of a case and gets to make up crazy stories about how the crime might have happened. There aren't enough episodes like that nowadays. Castle usually walks around like an insecure and love-sick puppy, worrying about Beckett's safety and the status of their relationship.

That scene had the potential to show Castle and Beckett's chemistry as lovers, but the writing fell flat, in my opinion. There wasn't much the actors could do with the words on the page--it seems like the writers phoned it in for that scene.

But it was an enjoyable episode overall. Reminded me of Castle 1.0.

Yeah of only it were that easy. But the thing is that's how Marlowe often tends to portray them in their arguments or just general conversations, like they're a couple of insecure teenagers. Is this what his relationship with Terri is like I wonder? Considering Castle is meant to be popular with the late forties to fifties crowd I find it strange.

I hear ya. I feel like Castle and Beckett have been dumbed down since they got together. Not when it comes to solving crimes, but they aren't as savvy or intuitive as they used to be when dealing with other people, especially each other.

Thank you for putting that in words. The Caskett relationship has been weird for the past couple of seasons.  I can't imagine marrying someone that doesn't make you laugh, and I've been married over 45 years.

Teenage angst is the best way to describe it. For a couple pushing 40 (from different sides) it seems very immature.

And I don't think Castle is immature for allowing childlike delight into his life. It's what makes him a rounded adult. Imagination!
