riverblue22 May 8, 2015 Share May 8, 2015 (edited) You definitely are on to a good track to research. I was doing a bit of research for a friend of mine who had an ancestor who was accused of being a witch twice. The first time she was accused of being a witch because she had too nice of a cape to wear (above her station). I think they decided it wasn't all that nice after all. She was again accused of being a witch but her family paid a fine and she was exonerated. So even in the days of Salem witches, money talked! Edited May 8, 2015 by riverblue22 1 Link to comment
Arynm August 3, 2015 Share August 3, 2015 I did my DNA through 23 and me. I am adopted so I know next to nothing. Turns out I am 23% Native American. Where do I sign up for the casino money? The rest is a mix of Northern European. Fun stuff, I just wish I could track down which tribe. I am in charge of the family history in my family, and besides an aunt who spent some time in a school for wayward girls and a 3x great grandfather who may or may not have had 2 families, I have uncovered surprisingly little scandal. I did have a 4x grandmother who died of a backroom abortion. Link to comment

On the Skip Gates show Finding your roots they were able to determine the ancestral tribes of African Americans, and which part of Africa they were from. I would think that there is DNA testing somewhere that could more closely determine your Native American ancestors. That would be an exciting discovery! Link to comment
bybrandy August 18, 2015 Share August 18, 2015 If trying to use DNA to locate information about your birth family you might consider googling DNAAdoption to get to a website/messageboard/tools and tips on finding out more information from your DNA. 23andme is where i started DNA but they have the least responsive of the participants since so many tested simply to get health results. You get more answers from FTDNA or Ancestry, although those can be hit or miss, too. Link to comment
hjmugillecuty September 1, 2015 Share September 1, 2015 I recently sent my DNA in to Ancestry and I admit I'm a little nervous. I know in general I'm about as WASPy as can be, but my grandmother was adopted. She found her birth parents before she died, and they have similar genealogy as her adoptive parents. However, it recently came out that she was most likely a twin. I can't decide if I want to find any new relatives or not. Link to comment
bybrandy September 1, 2015 Share September 1, 2015 It's rare. It happens. I know people who have had birth parents or birth siblings already tested, but it is rare. I would always rather know than not, but I do understand that it can be a whole other can of worms. Link to comment
hjmugillecuty September 3, 2015 Share September 3, 2015 Honestly, bybrandy, what makes me most nervous is that I've only told one sister I was sending in my DNA. I know my mom and other siblings would be okay with it, but I worry how my aunts, uncles and cousins would react. They freaked out when we put the biological parents as alternates on Ancestry. It's also why we don't dare try a Facebook style "trying to find" post. Link to comment
