There is not a 1:1 correlation. Rupaul’s success does not negate bigotry in the drag community. People have already provided several well researched and documented examples that it exists. People can love the show and still have an irrational raced based hatred of some Black queens. It’s counter intuitive, but so is racism. I’m sure some drag historians can correct me if I’m wrong, but Black queens were instrumental in making drag popular and mainstream. A lot of current drag culture and slang is appropriated from Black culture. I’m sure some Black queens find this to be an additional level of frustration in light of the racial negativity the get from a small but significant part of the drag community. This may be part of the chip on the shoulder attitude some perceive them to have. No, it's not the same thing. And there is bigotry everywhere. That is not a revelation. But to ascribe bigotry or racism willy-nilly based solely upon outcome is irrational IMO. And it only serves to infantilize, in this case, kennedy. Instead of acknowledging her agency in how people respond to her and taking control of the issue, she is quite content to wallow in self-pity. As you point out, people can irrationally "hate" a back queen on the show (this, of course, presupposes the irrationality of watching a black drag queen's show in the first place), but they can also respond qithout bigotry and simply not find kennedy appealing. I would venture that far more viewers of this show fall into the latter category. YMMV. Link to comment

Most think it's just their taste in men putting in their ads "blacks need not apply!" In the big city you see more inter-racial couples, but there's still a lot of bigotry in the community as a whole! ;-( 3 Link to comment
