S01.E21: Long Live the King

Recommended Posts

EVENTS REACH A BREAKING POINT WHEN THE KING’S MADNESS PUTS FRANCIS IN GRAVE DANGER — Mary and Catherine form an unlikely alliance when deciding how to deal with the increasingly manic King Henry, which puts Francis in jeopardy. Bash finds a boy who lived to tell about his encounter with the Darkness, which makes Bash determined to end it for good at any cost. Lord Julien reveals the truth about his motives, and Lola, blinded by love, finds herself in a dire situation after she attempts to protect him.

Lord Julien, not the surprise I was expecting, though I liked the way it played out, story wise.  I wonder what it will mean for Lola though, and if she will be blamed for the fire.

I knew right away Pascal ran because he was pagan, but I didn't guess that Bash killed his parents.  Why didn't I guess that? Boo.  And Mary is finally, finally growing a backbone, but they are making it out to seem that Francis will see too much of his mother in her, and not want to be with her anymore.

I know it's not set in the modern era, despite the clothing and hairstyles, but where did Lola get the idea that her kid would turn out fair-haired? More likely her own dark hair would be the dominant trait over Francis', or is she colouring hers? Still, it'll be fun to have her hanging around the castle and causing strife for Mary and Francis!

I love Catherine, but she's written SO inconsistently! For all her 'tough talk' and cunning she's the Wile E. Coyote of France, unable to carry out a simple assassination! (Yes, I know she backed out of the plan, but the altar boy already had doomed it to failure!)

I wish we'd seen Mary's letter to Elizabeth! I'd bet it would have the i's dotted with hearts!

Did I miss a follow-up scene with Greer and Leith? And poor Kenna thinks she's headed away from trouble, but has Damien along for the ride!

Totally pegged Pascal for a plant.  Don't hate the Darkness sub-plot as much as most seem to but I do hope they wind it up this season and it never comes back.

You don't have to be Gregor Mendel to figure out that if one parent is a blond and the other dark haired that there is a decent chance of the kid winding up as one or the other.  It's not like she was calculating the odds on an abacus she was speaking out of fear.

Yeah, didn't see that Lord Julien twist coming. Now I kind of feel bad for Lola. Of course, it was nice to see another one of those "Holy Crap!" moments that they hadn't had in a while when she pushed the poor guy into the fireplace spike. (Which just seems generally unsafe, but I'm not an interior designer, so what do I know?)

Oh, Lola. I guess at least she has a good cover story for the baby and the real Julian's family will be sending money. What a bummer about losing the guy. For a liar, he did seem to like her.

Death by fireplace spike! I guess this show is an OSHA warning. Don't have sex in open windows, don't have big old spikes at neck level, etc.

Just been bingewatching this, and enjoying it despise, or I should say because of all the historical inaccuracies (that way, no way to know what's coming next!), but one important historical fact they got right and that I didn't expect is the mention of Henri being sent hostage and living as a prisoner in Spain for a few years when he was a kid. Intesrestingly enough, it was when he was sent away such that a lady in waiting (who had more or less 20 years on him) expressed her dismay and kissed him goodbye - of course that was our Diane de Poitiers, whose impression on him was so strong that he never forgot her and kept her as his mistress despise the 20 (+?) year difference.

Interestingly enough, Catherine was also kept as an hostage in a convent and, while I don't know much about Mary's early years, Catherine as an 11 year old or such had to live through an attack of the convent where she was being held, and history has it that she was targeted to be raped, such as to destroy the honour of the Medicis.

Also, Catherine was very enamoured of Henri, but it took his mistress (Diane)' intervention for him to "honour" her in a way to produce heirs.
