Daphne Vasquez: She's Good At Everything

Taken from The Image Disappears episode thread.

Personally, I'm over Daphne. No one is that perfect at everything or deserves all the attention from everyone either. No wonder Bay's self-esteem has plummeted since Daphne arrived.

I'm having trouble seeing Daphne as being presented as perfect.  We've seen her mess up big time with Chef Jeff, with the food truck, and with talking to Nacho; we've seen her blackmail a senator and get caught, we've seen her chase Emmett only after he was taken even though she didn't really feel that way for him...  The list goes on and on.  How is this perfection?  Because she recovered?  Because her family still loves her?  All the characters have that - they mess up, but when they do their family forgives and still loves them.

I am not "over Daphne" because I don't think it's Daphne's fault this has happened. She didn't DO anything to hinder Regina's relationship with Bay. She didn't tell Regina she didn't want her to spend time with Bay. I think Bay can be kind of a brat, with her street art, running away etc- Daphne would never run away and put Regina through that type of stress. Bay's "misunderstood" persona gets old. Both girls are flawed I think and the "boyfriends of the week" and career hopping story lines get old and take us away from the heart of the show. I wish they had KEPT Daphne in the kitchen and explored her passion. That could've made for some great storylines.

I agree with this too.  Any lack of relationship Bay has with Regina or had with Angelo is not Daphne's fault.  So I'm not going to "blame" Daphne for have a good relationship with all her parents and Bay not being as close to her bio parents.  None of that is on Daphne.

For me I think she's presented as perfect in the sense that she's  this amazing future doctor, cook, all the boys (at least in the earlier seasons) want to date her, she does well in school, and to top it all off both sets of parents (arguably) feel the same way about her. She’s just so great that 90% of the time her flaws are overlooked. Plus she’s never not just good at something she’s the best at it (in comparison to Bay’s rejection from art school). Then the fact that the writers keep making the switch more about Daphne and Bay’s an afterthought. That said you’re right it’s not Daphne’s fault the Bay doesn’t have much of a relationship with Regina or Angelo. I’m “over her” now but that may change. We’ll see how the writing goes. I once disliked Angelo immensely  but by the end I saw what the point of him was on the show.

I don't think Daphne's perfect, but there have been times when I want to roll my eyes at Daphne during the show's run. The writers have a tendency to overwrite for her. She does do a lot of things well and she seems to be incredibly attractive enough to have that many love interests. I wish they had just kept her journey a little simpler because they overload her with boyfriend drama, family drama, career drama, political and socioeconomic drama. It does amuse me more than anything now.

i also think Katie LeClerc is limited in this role. I don't buy her emotional scenes, but I think she does angry well. It's starting to get to me how much older she looks compared to the other teens and how very much twentysomething instead of 17 that she is suppose to be. I almost wish the show would do a time jump.

I agree. She has never looked like a teenager (during the show, I'm sure she looked like a teen when she was a teen). And I think that plays into perceptions of her. At least for me. Even during the Chef Jeff debacle, I would have to stop myself from thinking "It's stupid, but it's not that horrible..." with "Oh, wait. She's only 16/17 and he's mid to late 20s. Eek." And she also doesn't do what I call the "hurt puppy dog eyes" well - it often comes across as b**ch-face.  Or catch myself thinking, "get over it.  How old are you now?" again reset my mind with "that's right she's a teenager...".  With those 2 things (age and b**ch-face), her acting limitations come through more.  If she showed the range of emotions more, I could get over those things more easily.   That said, once I do remind myself of them, I'm able to process and accept the story lines as is.  Even when she annoys me, I get over it quickly.

Agree with you as well. I had the same reactions to the Chef Jeff thing. I thought she actually had chemistry with him more than most of her "teen" boyfriends because they were closer in actual age to each other. It makes me wonder if the writers wrote the adult relationship in because of her actual age.

Yes, when she does the pining puppy dog eyes, she looks more annoyed. Anger seems to be her best acting emotion. She looked scary and intense when she told Regina it was all her fault in the last ep.

I'm at the point now that I'm over it too so I just kinda have to laugh about the stuff they put on her. I like Daphne when she is getting along with Bay, Emmett and Toby (he improves everyone really).

This came to my attention and I immediately thought that it would be a perfect Daphne storyline. We had her as someone who loved (loves?) to cook, why doesn't she try something like this?  I think this could make for an interesting plot line.  Certainly Bae could even work there and it would bring all the characters into one location.

I haven't watched since season 3, but the thing that bugs me about Daphne is there are never any consequences to her actions.  The one exception to that is when she lied about losing her hearing aid.

But, other than that, she blackmails a senator.  That's all good.  She instigates an inappropriate relationship with her boss and gets him fired (yes, it was his responsibility to say no to her, I full agree with that, but it still wasn't right on her part).  I don't really remember anything else, but I feel like there was other stuff.

Then, the whole basketball team thing bugged me.  She switches teams because her team keeps losing.  I like to win as much as the next guy, but you can't team shop like that.  But, OK, she switches teams.  But, then she doesn't actually get to play because they just wanted her because she's deaf.  So, she switches back (after her old team starts winning, btw).  Then, they make the championship game, and she isn't allowed to play because she hasn't been on the team long enough, due to all her team switching. And, she whines about it so they let her play anyway.  Because she's deaf, or because it's a deaf team.  But, either way, NO, just no.  The rules are for everybody Daphne.  You haven't played on the team long enough.  Sorry, that really annoyed me as you can tell, since it's been a few years and I managed to get a good rant up for it.

Daphne was punished for blackmailing the senator- she got a Juvie record for it.

But I agree with you.
