S05.E07: From This Day Forward

Recommended Posts

Please, please, please don't make Vic pregnant. I'm hopeful it's something else, given that she's bundled in her jacket in the office toward the end. But I'm so very tired of vomit as signal that someone's pregnant.

Also, in general vomit seems to be very in on TV lately. I'm hoping they phase it out soon.

Ferg and Meg were pretty cute, but he certainly isn't showing the best judgement by bringing her along to a house where he doesn't really know what he'll find. Did anyone else get the vibe, though, that Meg has something shady in her past? That question about checking databases in other jurisdictions kind of pinged my radar.

I miss wise and mildly amused Henry. I wonder if they'll ever bring up why he wanted to adopt the boy who killed himself. There seemed to be some backstory, and I thought maybe Henry was the boy's grandfather. But then Mathias also had a significant emotional reaction to the boy that seemed beyond someone wanting to protect his people. I'm interested in that story, if they ever pick it up again. The Irish Mob, not so much.

Ah, thanks. I thought I had somehow missed an entire storyline with the kid. Druggie and/or missing parents obviously, but every city has some of those and I was unsure why this child in particular had struck a nerve with Henry.

I wish Henry had told Cady why there wouldn't be an adoption. He keeps everything important to him bottled up while still being a rock for his friends.

I think it was a "straw that broke the camel's back" kind of thing. Henry (and Matthias) was aware of the drug dealing, and there had been a number of overdoses, but Mingus ended up an orphan. Plus, Henry thought he'd been making progress with Mingus (the medicine bag), and then to see him hanging from a tree...that's a particularly heartbreaking kind of hopelessness.

There's certainly the straw/camel/back element, but even in the beginning, long before that heart wrenching scene, it seemed that Henry and Matthias both knew the boy, and were somehow involved with him. It could have been something as simple as Henry's connection with Gab (he was her coach). But it seemed stronger than that, given that he immediately tried to start adoption procedures. Given his current circumstances, that doesn't seem like something he'd do for every orphan on the rez. Maybe it was just the powerful acting, but it felt like there was more to the story to me.

Doling the episodes out and watching only one a week to make them last longer!  Just watched this episode tonight.

I thought that as well but I certainly hope it's not true.  The Ferg really deserves a break for a change. I like how he's advancing so I would hate to see him back to doubting himself.

Since both Mathias and Henry know pretty much everyone on the rez and knew that Mingan's dad was an addict, it may have just been as simple as that.  Henry definitely takes a lot on himself on the rez (working with the men's group as well as the woman's assault sweat lodge) so he might have just decided to take on an orphan.  He's got such a caring soul.  I did wonder, however, why they left that poor kid alone in his house the  night his dad died.  Maybe there was no family available but I would have thought that the elders might have found at least one family to take him in at least for a while.  Not everyone on the rez is destitute.

I must confess here that I am way more invested in the Henry story line this season.   And love seeing more Mathias as well.  Not enough of either of them in this episode.

I see your point, but at remember back when fainting was "the sign" on tv? I was kind of gratified to see Vic not just toss her cookies (or bagels, as it were), but to continue to feel like crap (I'm assuming she is pg). When I was expecting I never threw up once, but I was nauseated pretty much 24/7 for several months and spent hours on end with my face plastered to the couch feeling miserable.

Yes! I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Me three. That was sooooo out of left field. I wasn't so much thinking that she had been in trouble but that she had an agenda, maybe finding someone who had tried to disappear on her?

I do remember fainting as "the sign." Partly I hate it because vomit is "in" on tv in general, and I'm not that keen on seeing people vomit. I dealt with it enough when my kids were young. Partly because it's just lazy writing. There are a number of signs they can use to foreshadow a pregnancy. I was queasy occasionally (sorry to hear you were so sick) but for me, my biggest "tell" early on was sore boobs. That and exhaustion and the fact my period was late.

Clanstarling I see your point, but in the writers' defense, queasiness is simply a much easier sign to work into the episode. Vic's life has been in upheaval and she has demonstrated that she hasn't really been on top of things (evidenced by her "surprise" eviction and stack o'unanswered mail), so if she wasn't on the pill, I can believe she wouldn't have noticed being late. And signs like being late, or sore boobs, are more difficult to bring up either visually or in dialogue for a character like Vic who doesn't appear to have any girlfriends with whom she shares that kind of thing. So a symptom like queasiness, which she assumes is just tummy troubles, is a "safe" topic of discussion for the boy's club of the sheriff's office. I think they were also bundling tiredness in there, what with her coworkers telling her she looked like crap (in a concerned way). In your defense, they didn't have to show her barfing. People can be queasy without tossing their cookies.

Oh btw I was watching another series this week and one of the characters fainted as her "tell," and I hearkened back to our conversation and laughed.

I just hope they have a damned good reason for this whole pregnancy thing.  It's usually reserved for shows that have nothing left to give and we know that's not the case with the normally excellent writers on Longmire.

I have no problem with Vic being pregnant. It happens. Watching this episode, I presumed that Eammon was the father. I just don't like how it played out.

Donna is a psychiatrist you would think that Walt unable to have sex with her should be a huge red light.

It was sweet when Walt gave Ferg his badge back. He and Meg were cute in this episode.

I can't believe that Cady went into that house. She should have gotten the hell out of there when she saw JP.
