S01:E06 Episode 6

Recommended Posts

Seems to be getting heavily dependent on deus ex machina ... folks involuntarily self-immolating, that faux-police officer appearing at just the moment the policeman escaped death to ... shoot him dead, erasing the momentary karmic distinction created by the father's restraint. I'm finding the actual mechanics of those involuntary "self-immolations" distracting in a "how is that supposed to work?" way.

I didn't see any reason for Elise (as we have come to know her) should/would have not had sex with Karl's son since there was no reason for Karl to know about it, at least not while the sheets were still warm/unchanged. Laura kicked Karl out ... Karl chunneled over to see Elise and "caught" them together.  Karl got this double "payback" for his unfaithfulness but his discomfort was more ironic and convincing than his 'outrage' that Elise might sex with his son (as if the son were some possession or pet whose affection Elise might steal).  If they didn't have sex, then their early morning apparent intimacy/comfort seemed off, except perhaps (to this older American) as "European"  or millennial casualness.

So long Stephen. I guess he stabbed himself to death?

I was a little surprised that Karl didn't even try to lie to his wife about schtupping a witness. Seems like he actually has very little invested in his marriage, which was initially portrayed to us as happy. Are we supposed to believe that the case has affected/tainted his personal life? Because he seems fairly phlegmatic to me about multiple gruesome killings.

Elise doesn't lie so I have to believe she didn't have sex with Adam, but what the hell.

Are we done with Sophie now?

About that marriage, I had initially thought they were a separated couple when we first met them in, was it E2?  I tend to avoid being judgmental about fictional couples, particularly when we have almost zero back story  ... and I was surprised by Laura's emotionality about both the pregnancy and her suspicions that he has schtupped the rich lady ... why would she suspect, unless she was a suspicious and jealous type, in which case an unfaithful partner is something better avoided altogether, because, no, it's not going to work out.

It's funny. It almost felt as if they filmed espisode prior to writing the next chapter ... Karl didn't actually say a thing ... didn't argue, didn't apologize, didn't admit... to me it didn't feel like this was the first time this matter of infidelity was an issue, for either of them. We'll see where it goes. I wasn't sure why the son was being so hostile, I guess I missed something ... and I do wonder what he and Elise got up to after he showed up at her door uninvited?? or invited? or

What were he and Suze talking about when he was describing pushing a man to his death in an empty pool?  Suze seemed to like hearing about his death.

Sure seemed like they were fondly recalling killing someone when they were kids! It was creepy. She's still alive so I have to think that thread is eventually going to go somewhere.

I think their dad. I'm guessing he was abusive? Didn't we get that in an earlier ep when the detectives were researching Suze about the old-folks'-home overdoses?

Some people can read their spouses like a book. Laura can read Karl, and Karl knows it. Which is why he made no response -- he knew he didn't have to, and anything he actually said would make things worse. I really like this bit of writing, because it doesn't show the wronged wife as some phone-snooping, accusation-hurling shrew. She twigs to a horrible truth noetically, she takes a day to sort through the behavioral evidence, she broaches the subject lightly, but prepared for the contradiction that confirms the lie, and when it appears, her fears are realized. Karl knows his behavior is indefensible; he makes no defense. Which imo is way a more interesting scene to play than a 'baby, it didn't mean anything, I promise!' weaseling. There was a lot going on in that silence.

In the after-show footage, Karl is said to have five kids from five different women. That could explain why his wife so quickly "assumed" he had slept with the "other woman." I'd be cool with Elise sleeping with Karl's son. Her relationship with the bartender is pretty funny, Karl's son would mean no more to her than that.
