The Olympic Village: What the athletes are up to when not competing

Recommended Posts

Many Olympics have also had a large staff of dentists on hand so that athletes and delegation members from poorer countries could have some cavities fixed when they weren't competing.

Well, that solves that mystery.

And it's not all male-female hookups, either.  In fact, the Olympic Village is quite the hotbed of gay sexual activity on the downlow.  That's how Greg Louganis found out that he was gay -- you might say that he kissed a boy there, and he liked it.

That is so cool.   Now THAT is money well spent.

There's an interesting article on the Rome 1960 Olympic Village in the July/August issue of the British design & culture magazine Monocle. It was originally designed to be housing for government employees but over the years, that changed to low income public housing, and by the 1990s, it was one of the most dangerous parts of Rome. Then shortly after 2000, the area ended up on Rome's gentrification pathway, and, since the village was built well enough to survive the projects/housing estate years with only significant cosmetic damage, it's now become a desirable and pleasant place for peoples of all income levels to live.

The Olympia mall in Munich, where the recent shooting took place, was the site of the Olympic Village there.  I wonder if it was torn down because of its association with the massacre, or because of deterioration.
