Quote

Swearengen directs Farnum to buy back the Garret claim; Alma prevails on Calamity Jane and Hickok for help; Hickok commissions Bullock in his stead; Charlie Utter leaves the camp; an ailing colleague, Andy Cramed, rejoins the Bella Union; and Hickok's run of luck at poker yields an unexpected return.

Even though I knew it was coming this time, still hard to watch. I loved Keith Carradine's performance, and I remember the first time I saw this back in the day, I was shocked that it had happened (obviously, this was in the days before I googled and spoiled myself THOROUGHLY on everything, and this episode may be why I do that!).

That last scene is just such a killer.

Are you kidding me?  I just got Ned Starked? Again?

OMG I KNOW, RIGHT? Except I didn't get Ned Starked the first time, I got Wild Bill Hicocked (since I saw this back when it first aired).

This is why I'm a huge spoiler whore, people. This episode, right here. TELL ME WHO IS GOING TO DIE, because I was SERIOUSLY invested in Keith Carradine as Wild Bill. I very rarely start a new historical show or one based on books without reading the Wikipedia entry, any associated Wikis, and googling the hell out of it. This episode scarred me.

I knew about the Dead Man's Hand and that Wild Bill was killed during a game but not that it happened in Deadwood, if it did.

And I just realized this ep that Carradine was the dad in "Andre." I loved "Andre."

Aaah!

I was watching on a plane, with the episode ending like two minutes after we landed, but I barely noticed we had landed and everyone was getting off and such. Wow was i not expecting that.

This was an amusing episode up until the end and then it kicks you right in the face.

What a brilliant episode. The last five minutes alone are a masterpiece, with everyone reacting in their own way to the news of Wild Bill's murder - Jack McCall being chased through the street and apprehended, the dawning realisation on Clench's and poor Jane's faces that their friend is dead, the man on the horse galloping into town and brandishing the dead Native American's head but choosing the totally wrong time to make any impact ...

Other things:

  • This is the first time we learn that Clench has a wife and child, right?
  • Shirtless Timothy Off-With-His-Pants!
  • I am struck every time I notice EB's threadbare coat that he must be an awful cheapskate not to buy a new one when he clearly is quite well-off.
  • The conversation between Al and Wild Bill at the Gem about Garret's gold claim and the Pinkertons is one for the ages. Just fantastic.
  • I love Jane and Alma forming a connection.
  • Poor Trixie! That did NOT look like a pleasant fuck with Al.

Best lines in this episode for me came from Lou, one of the dealers at Tom Nuttall's. First he says to Jack McCall, in as dry a way as possible: 'No matter how your day's going, Jack, you're always fun to talk to.' And then, as McCall leaves, Lou remarks in the same bone-dry way: 'He too is God's handiwork.' Hee.

Heh, I am too. The minute I know a show is a keeper,  I start spoiling myself. I've never once regretted it. For shows like Bloodline and Justified, it's a dealbreaker knowing something horrible was in store for my characters. I'd rather stop before I get too invested in the show. I spoile(er)d myself like crazy with this show. I knew this episode was coming; in fact I expected it to happen in episode 2 (because according to wikipedia, only one day separates Seth and Sol's arrival to Deadwood and Wild Bill Hickok's end.

One of the joys of bingewatching is being able to spoil myself episodes in advance.

And with shows like *Justified* you get pretty substantive entries by character names, some of them tracing every single episode the character appears in.

So glad to see I have company.

I thought that Wild Bill wore a gunslingers holster. What was the significance of the red sash that he put on before gambling?

I know I'm late to the party but someone strongly recommended that I binge this show. I am not disappointed. Had I known it was this good I'd have viewed ages ago.

Better late than never.  ;-)   Happy bingeing!
