Pentatonix: Season 3 Champs

Recommended Posts

Yeah, I was disappointed by the cameraperson's focus on Jennifer Nettles over Pentatonix during the CMAs. But, they did sound good (well, I will admit that Jennifer couldn't hope to match Dolly's rendition).

Hallelujah video is already over 30 million in less than two weeks.

Pentatonix Christmas is already pushing 100,000 in sales in two weeks. If this keeps up and obviously will grow during November and December, I definitely see another platinum album by the end of the year, especially with the sales-booster of the special. RCA will be really pleased.

Just caught their theme song for football--most excellent!!

First, fab shoes, Kirstin!! Lots of screen time for those. Also loved Kevin's close-ups of him using a neon old-time microphone. Very catchy adaptation of Sing, and they sound terrific.

That time they performed Hallelujah live, for the first time, in concert during their Memphis show...and with almost 31.5M YT views 14 days after release.

RCA will be really pleased.

Open up the purse strings for more non-holiday radio airplay; attack the market from multiple fronts.

I was looking up 2016 album sales, and there are so far only three other 2016 albums with platinum certification (Ariana Grande, Beyonce, and someone else). I am sure there will be a few more by the end of the year, and I just hope PTX is one!

Since Gold was never released for sale, just on YT, and IMO God Rest Ye is too close in style to their previous Grammy song, I am guessing Hallelujah will be the nominee.

BTW, speaking of God Rest Ye,

Oh, this new song from Superfruit is really good, and the guerilla filming of their video is terrific--all on iPhones, and Scott boasted about how they didn't get arrested in the filming.

This song confirms for me that Superfruit, as it's own group, has a very specific style, since I can definitely see the aural links between this and Bad 4 Us.

I do think this one is a little frantic... but maybe that's intentional given the theme shown in the video.

So, are they going to get the Grammy nom for God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen or Hallelujah or Gold?

I'd hate it if they got it for God Rest Ye, because it would give the impression that they're getting the award automatically for lack of competition. Not that there's anything wrong with it as a song, but if of ALL of their songs this year you give it to the one with such a similar sound to another song they previously won for?  It means that the Grammy's aren't really paying attention to their entire ouvre.

If nothing from the Pentatonix album is eligible (due to age), then I think they may get a Grammy nom for Hallelujah.

Also, PTX will be on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Dec. 7, in addition to these other tv appearances.

What goes around comes around.

Besides being on Live With Kelly Nov. 25, The Voice Nov. 29, A Pentatonix Christmas Special on Dec. 14, and America's Got Talent on Dec. 19, are there any other big tv appearances?

Was it iTunes released though? Maybe not. But I wonder how does that counts/figures in for songs which get iTunes only releases?

That said, Gold is a cover of a recent song (not a classic like Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy) and while their arrangement on it is total genius, it doesn't have the extra layer (like Daft Punk) of being a remix/compilation/mash-up. So no, it's not going to get a nom, I think.

If I understand the GRAMMY.org FAQ page Eligibility Requirements section correctly, then tracks from the Pentatonix album are eligible to be nominated for the 59th Annual GRAMMY Awards. Furthermore, I *think* songs from all editions/versions of same album qualify for consideration for a nomination (Standard, Deluxe, Target Special Edition). A Pentatonix Christmas will have to wait until the 60th GRAMMYs for any consideration.

Other recordings that could be entered in hopes of getting nominated are Jolene and the Perfume Medley--since both are still sold on iTunes/Apple Music and were released during the 59th GRAMMYs current eligibility period.

I'm not sure if That's Christmas To Me (Deluxe Edition) qualifies. However, the bonus tracks on it were released during the current eligibility period for the 59th GRAMMYs, and are for sale on iTunes.

FYI, they will have to fly from LA to NYC overnight Tuesday since they are now scheduled to perform on the Christmas in Rockefeller Center show for the tree lighting on Wednesday night.

ETA: I finally went through my pile of Christmas catalogs, and was pleasantly surprised to see the vinyl version of Pentatonix (the self-titled album, not one of their Christmas ones) featured as an example of vinyl albums available at Bed, Bath and Beyond.

Well, left coast, right coast, middle America... they all shop there... so it's a good place for them to be.

FYI, PTXnewsandstuff has a great hour-long talk by Kevin linked on their Twitter account (I don't know how to do Twitter links here). He is giving it to a church group, but even with some religious stuff put in, as an agnostic, it didn't bug me too much. The rest of the speech had just loads of info in it, starting with his being brought up expecting to go into medicine, then how he got into Chinese studies. He then spends some time talking about his views on classical music and how he began to mix it up a bit, first on the advice of his teacher at Yale and then from one of his new friends in China who suggested he combine the cello and his beatboxing. (Oh, and he has a really funny anecdote about how he was asked to join a basketball pickup game in China, and his complete lack of basketball skills definitely were on display there.)

His decision to get into music was made before he ever joined Pentatonix. He was invited to tour with a duo spinning off from a Christian-music group, and the timing on the tour was perfect--end of September 2011 to mid-November, just after he finished taping The Sing-Off and before the rehearsals began for the finale and Christmas episodes.

Then he talks about his spiritual problems with their first tour in early 2012 before he told the group that he couldn't do Friday night shows anymore, then his worries that his Sabbath adherence meant they would have to turn down the Kelly Clarkson opener gig, but Kelly totally worked with them on the timing, so that they were done singing before the official time of Friday sundown and didn't have to sing on Saturday nights until after sundown. He gives Kelly all the props for that accommodation.

He also does a few songs on his cello throughout the talk.

It is a really professional presentation, with a lot of humor and passion for the subjects discussed (if it wasn't for PTX, I think he would live in China permanently!). Definitely worth the hour to listen to it!

Your move RCA...since, lately, the Peacock Network has gotten so chummy with PTX.

I imagine their original contract with The Sing-Off probably had some kind of favored nations clause with NBC. where if NBC asked them to appear, they pretty much have to. It wouldn't have kept them from appearing anywhere else, but it would explain why they have been on NBC programs so often and so consistently, even years after name-checking The Sing-Off stopped doing the network any good (go look up how many Today show appearances they have, for example).

Such a thing, if it existed, may not be in force anymore, but the bookers at NBC know them, and PTX's management knows the NBC folks right back (and probably always did, since some of them were once associated with The Sing-Off).

That said, NBC Universal and Universal Music Group are hardly the same thing, so Sony/RCA's contract with PTX seems safe for the moment!

Hah, yes! My original (unstated) thought goes back to RCA promoting the group more. Just from the past few weeks, I've noticed a few tweets regarding PTX via RCA's official account (and, of course, RCA has gotten PTX some radio play). It just seems like NBC is doing more--like a marketing/promo blitz. I wasn't suggesting PTX eventually set up shop with Universal Music Group--although my imagination isn't against a future bidding "war".

I wonder what, if any, ratings or demo targets NBC has for the Dec. 14 special. If it goes over well, maybe RCA can take it as a sign that PTX's ROI is worth additional spend? I'd like to think I'm waxing realistic that a hundred-mil marketing campaign is too much, but spending more to promote them than what they do now (even though I don't know that number) could produce a win-win outcome that they may not have thought possible given...a cappella.

This isn't to say that RCA is somehow holding PTX back. It's more me wondering what a big record label partnering with one of their acts could accomplish if just a few more $$ were spent.

As Christmas approaches, PTX is everywhere again.

One of the higher profile places they are... which we may not have all yet seen (because today was day 1 for these) is appearing in a whole series of Amazon Music/Alexa/A Pentatonix Christmas joint ads.

There are just a ton of these (I saw 14 of them) if you YouTube Search "Amazon Music Pentatonix", but here's a random four of those.

Amazon Music: Who is Pentatonix?

Amazon Music: Pentatonic scale by Pentatonix

Amazon Music: Reindeer by Pentatonix

Amazon Music: Popular Christmas song by Pentatonix

What the heck, since they're all really well done (if a bit intentionally cheesy), lets post four more.

Amazon Music: Christmas Music by Pentatonix

Amazon Music: Christmas sweater by Pentatonix

Amazon Music: "Who is Santa?" by Pentatonix

Amazon Music: Naughty by Pentatonix

Hee, this article (thanks, ptxnewsandstuff) has great behind the scenes details from the Champaign, IL gig, including what they require on their rider in terms of food and drink: http://www.news-gazette.com/news/business/2016-12-04/record-it-pays-play-state-farm-center.html

That reporter is crazy if they really think that's a demanding backstage rider. That's like $200 in groceries. Big effing deal. Maybe $350 if you add the booze they didn't get. The no fluorescent lighting clause may sound a tad odd, but it's pretty easy to implement (remove some overhead bulbs and get some floor lamps. Again, big deal.

I also liked the $$$ part of the contract. The last time I remember seeing any mention of that aspect was a few years ago in a Forbes article that had them grossing around $50K per concert. Now they are getting 4-5 times that, if not more.

i do approve of their choice of Jameson whiskey! I fell in love with that stuff in Ireland a few years ago (goes really well with ginger ale and a twist of lime).

While not as cool as their Grammy nom announced today, yesterday, the PTXofficial YT channel crossed the 12M subscriber mark.

Their channel is also 20M-25M views shy of 2 BILLION. The View count displayed in the About section of their channel updates once every 24-36 hours. It currently shows that they are about 26.23M away but adding up the view counts of the 99 vids yields a number that is a few million closer to 2B. Dependent on any bumps they get from things like tv appearances (and Grammy noms), the channel could register its 2 billionth view in the next 3 to 7 days.

This has been your friendly, neighborhood milestone alert...from an anal-retentive Pentaholic.

Patrons got to see the newest video, which should be up later today. It's for "Coldest Winter," and it's a big departure from the usual video format. I won't spoil it here, but I enjoyed the rebel vibe from the vid--it fits my "Screw Christmas" mood right now!!

Well, there was cheesey skits, bad holiday sweaters, special guests, dancers, and lots of music, as promised! All in all, a good promotional hour for both of their full-length Xmas albums (notice that the last song was TCTM).

I am pretty sure that the woman Scott twirled in the audience was either his mom or maybe Avi's.

I liked the camera work on Hallelujah. Interesting way to move everyone around the stage and include the audience in the background with the handheld lights.

Yes, the woman Scott twirled was his mom. Despite the skits, what I liked (in addition to the music), were the bits with each member--they put names (correctly spelled) with faces. I don't know if they're called bumpers or tags, but those little bits allowed you to get a better sense of each of them as individuals (like Kirstin talking about her family making a birthday cake for Jesus).

I think I'll Be Home For Christmas, with Kelly, should be released as a single. I wish they had performed Little Drummer Boy, but I was so happy they did Hark, The Herald Angels Sing.

By the way, Twitter seems to be abuzz because APC has gone Platinum in the U.S. There are pics of them holding official plaques and pics with RCA/Sony executives.

I don't get how it could be platinum already--ptxnewsandstuff has been keeping pretty good tabs on the ongoing numbers, and they had it just going gold this week.

Lol. Yeah. They must be pretty confident it will go platinum by the year's end. The Xmas special certainly boosts its numbers.

Trying to get it up on Youtube somehow for fans who couldn't see it. It really was amazing to see them have their own freaking show. Wonder what its ratings will be like.
