The character of Charlie Utter is a good example of how the Deadwood characters/actors have imprinted themselves on our television culture psyches. Whenever a show features Dayton Callie I'll watch it, don't much care what it's about.

A friend of mine went to NYU film school with Dayton Callie; he acted in the first student film she directed. She remembers him as a nice guy as well as a good actor.

 

Charlie Utter is such a lovely character.

What a lovely beatdown Charlie gave to Wolcott in tonight's episode. "Kill him, kill him," I kept shouting. God, this show (and GoTH) is having quite an effect on me in terms of believing in nonviolence. Everyone should have a Charlie in their lives, as a friend and protector. And of course, mover of mail.

I also loved the awkwardly tender moment between Charlie and Joanie, when she broke down crying and he finally put his arms around her.  He is such a gentleman.

At Bill's grave, his desperation about Jane is so heartbreaking. He just doesn't know what to do for her, and yet he promised Bill he'd look after her, and of course his own decency would have led him to do it anyway. Broke my heart.

Willowy, when did he say this - the context. Pretty funny even without a context.

It was when he was standing in the breakfast line picking a fight with Wolcott. I love Charlie's take on things. :)

Whenever I'm in a line with someone truly obnoxious, I think of the Charile Utter "he stepped on my toe" excuse for taking them outside for a good thrashing.  ;-)
