It's the classic MasterChef team-relay challenge where four teams must compete create a savoury dish that uses potatoes in at least two ways.

Air Date: May 28, 2025

Again the disparity of this season was on full display tonight. Did we REALLY have to see Laura getting a tongue bath for her inventive, innovative dish she has cooked "hundreds of times" for actual restaurant diners, and the only thing she changed about it was adding a bit of smoke? The real smoke is what the producers are blowing up our butts. 🙄 Same goes for Sarah whose "dessert" sounded like about THE most disgusting thing one could ever imagine eating - she has also run restaurants. The challenges really aren't fair and neither is this season.

My heart broke a bit for poor Darrsh because at least he really pushed the boat right out there and tried doing something different. It would have been a travesty if he had been sent home so I am glad it was Rhiannon because now the Kath and Kim team is no more.

I hope tomorrow's episode is more interesting than tonight's because I don't really enjoy watching food getting prepared that sounds absolutely gross!

S17•E16 — Josh Niland’s Surf & Turf Elimination Challenge

Josh Niland has improved a lot in giving feedback. His comments are more descriptive and constructive than Sofia's and Andy’s. 🙄

I'm not a fish person. I find all Josh’s episodes boring because none of the dishes are appetizing. I can smell the fish from my screen. Eww.

The look on Josh’s face when Darrsh explains his Surf and Turf dessert. 😆

We get to see more of Sarah and her Van Cleef bracelet today. I won’t be eating her dish, but the judges somehow love it.

Yes, Laura. Josh calls you boring. And I couldn’t agree more. 🤣

Rhiannon purposely turns on the waterworks because she knows what’s coming. Buh-bye Miss Packet Noodle. Won’t miss ya!

I am looking forward to the team relay challenge on Wednesday. 💪🏼

“I’m trying to come at it from the mind of a meat butcher and apply that into fish theory.”

You could not pay me enough money to listen to someone say that without bursting out laughing; the fact that these contestants act so reverently as if the Dalai Lama came back to this show (and the fact he actually was on this show year ago is kind of mind-boggling) makes me feel almost delusional enough to purchase Andy’s scoop necked kimono.

“Intramuscular fat gives you the pleasure of eating” is a sentence that inspires as much  pleasure in me as it makes me hungry.

“To be able to replicate meat with tuna is wild.”

What’s wild is the level of self-importance and ass-kissing in the first ten minutes of this episode. Would it kill these people to have a modicum of a shred of a skerric* of humility or self-awareness?

*Speaking of self-awareness, I know this is an Australian term and, as such, I would normally not use it, and I also don’t know if it’s archaic, but I am a stupid American who is unable to grasp the joys of meat replication and intramuscularity.

Anyway, there’s my quota of snark for the entire season and I will now go #rhiplenish myself so I can feel as beautiful and perfect as progressive, groundbreaking, intramuscular Surf and Turn 2025.

In most cases we Aussies usually have a good bullshit-o-meter but when it comes to MC AU it clearly is switched off while the cameras are rolling. Maybe behind the scenes the hamsters roll their eyes about the things they are expected to say. Let's bloody hope so! 🤣

Well, I must say I didn't see that coming, with Audra and Sarah ending up in the bottom four, but since they're both considerably more experienced and qualified than either Tim or Rue we'll probably lose one of those two and my prediction/preference is for Rue to go.

Callum very likely made the best and most interesting dish but he still only managed to get about a quarter of St Laura's screen time 🙄 What is so revolutionary about making pasta with a slightly different type of flour? The amount of pasta she would have made in her life, not to mention being a professional chef, meant she was always going to be able to make it work so talk about fake drama and a waste of time which could have been used to show ALL the dishes for once.

I liked the guest chef tonight. She gave good feedback too.

S17•E17 — Ixta Belfrage’s Mystery Box Challenge

The surprise ingredient is chili! That’s so underwhelming. Chili goes with everything, sweet and savory.

I am kinda hoping that Sarah will make Bonito ice cream. 🤣 Anyway, her dish looks like one of Billie’s.

On a shallow note, I notice Sarah and Declan walk into the kitchen together. They also stand next to each other during judges’ deliberations. Something is blossoming during filming.

In terms of appearance, Callum’s dessert reminds me of John Demetrios’ green dessert from Dessert Masters S02 finale.

At this point in the competition, Tim still couldn't cook prawns properly.

Rue only has 2 frozen elements to focus on and she fails again. It’s time to go home.

Dishes from Ben, Declan, Darrsh, Snez and Samira have been edited out because Laura needs to be featured prominently. 🙄

Dear Lord, please give us mercy. Can Laura be given Beau treatment for the sake of our sanity? Amen. 🙏🏻

Yes, I totally agree with this! I think Endemol Shine could edit pretty much anything into oblivion, which is their job, of course. I'm not invested enough to tell which contestants would be snarky about this (my scale would be from Justin Narayan as a zero to Adam Liaw as a ten), but I'm sure some of them are reasonably smart and savvy. They're not producing or editing the show to suit my preferences, so as long as I don't have to actually consume ice cream made of shellfish or offal, I snark out of love. And by "love," I mean occasional, begrudging entertainment value.

Oh my gosh! Best elimination ever, finally!

I will not miss Rue and her whining.

Looking forward to tomorrow's team relay.

I think I heard @Mellowyellow cheering from afar too!

Rue does seem to lack self-awareness because in her talking heads she's saying things like she thought the challenge was going to work out so well because "desserts are my jam", so to have people for whom desserts are NOT necessarily their jam beating her like that would have been a huge reality check.

Sarah seems to have taken on Billie's very calm and composed cooking style and she was NEVER in danger the whole time.  Audra looked to be in trouble but found a way to catch up and eventually cook a decent dish.  Prince Harry II was just lucky Rue stuffed up worse.

Still not sure about this Declan and Sarah love match.  I mean, she's 38, he's 27, and even though I think he's a cute young guy, you could say he's punching above his weight with ex-model Sarah!

I cannot even imagine them as a couple, but I'm assuming the editors really want to get a soundbite of "Declan is my name, and dating models is my game" or something like that. It'll be this year's version of the tired "me blokey, me big hands can't make nice food, me can't pronounce non-English" trope.

Especially since "desserts are my jam" is now going to be retired, at least until Back to Win III: Electric Blokealoo.

Very expected elimination today, BTW. I have zero knowledge of anything spoiler-related but I'm getting the sense that Callum and Laura are not going anywhere soon, and I approve of about half of that statement. I like Audra and, while I don't think she will or needs to win, I would certainly support that as well.

This season is growing me--maybe like a fine wine, or maybe just like an infectious rash, if there's a difference when discussing reality TV.

🤣 Definitely the infectious rash, I think!

I hereby pronounce Callum the MVP of the whole relay challenge.  Laura and Andre probably both think their input was what sealed the deal but right from the get-go, as always, Callum was organised, calm, sensible and quick and basically, your dream team player in a relay.  And good for Depinder for working out what to do when the first batch of potato noodles didn't work.

Whereas Jamie... WTF?  Even if everyone out there DID know what Lancashire hot pot was, why would anyone, on any competitive cooking show, EVER willingly choose to cook an English dish?  The Poms are great at a lot of things but food ain't one of them!  I also have no idea what a Lancashire hot pot is but my guess would have been a boring, under-seasoned stodgy stew with overcooked meat and boring vegetables - in other words, totally un-MC.  This is an actual recipe but reading it just reinforces what a stupid choice it was again because it's the kind of meal that you'd do in a slow cooker.  Yeah, that'd work great in an 80-minute challenge involving four different chefs.

Poor Ben, in an elimination yet again!  He just can't take a trick when it comes to avoiding them, can he?  @Snazzy Daisy, I'm pissed off at Declan too.  Maybe he should spend less time mooning over Sarah if that's what he's been up to!

S17•E19 — Lancashire Whatpot Potato 2-Ways Team Relay Challenge

🔹RED — Jamie picks an unfamiliar dish, causing Samira to get flustered. Sarah is like, “this is not a hotpot, where’s the pot?” 🤣

🔹GREEN — Ben makes a mistake from the get-go by preparing too many elements without a clear direction. Prince Harry’s brother and Snez are doomed no matter what, because Declan forgets to mention the key ingredient.

Quote

“We are other victims of the MasterChef team relay.”

Says a guy with an immunity pin on his chest. 🤣

🔹PURPLE — Putting Callum as the first cook is the right call. His changeover is smooth and methodical. Depinder nails the potato noodle and Andre brings it home in his Zen mode. Depinder has won immunity from Sunday’s elimination for 2 weeks in a row.

🔹YELLOW — Unlike Jamie, Darrsh is a good strategist. He thinks about his teammates when deciding about their dish. Beau trash-talking deserves some airtime.

Overall, this is a very entertaining episode.

And “Lancashire Hotpot” is the 2025 WCV.

I’m just sitting here happy that incompetent fool Rue is eliminated! I whined about Sarah returning but I’m fine with her now what I’ve started watching.

But Rue……omg she grated on every last nerve!!!

Some of the people I used to like I’m not very fond of this season and others that I found irritating I’m fine with. Snez I dislike this time around (chaotic and a bit full of herself). Audra I didn’t like in her original season but she’s grown on me here.

I am neutral towards Laura (cook something else besides pasta!!!!!!!) but that’s probably because Rue irked me more than anyone!

Zero recollection of Ben but I like him!!!!

Stepped out for a season or two, but I'm watching again. Only really remember a few of these guys. Go Callum! I'm devastated to see that Laura is there and is the new Reynold. I hope she ends up a three-time loser like he did!

Tim sure has nine lives, doesn't he? Glad that Rue and the two annoying OTT "perky quirky older women" are gone.

This is the first time I'm seeing the new judges. Okay, why are there so many judges?! And is this the best they could do?! I guess I'm used to Andy, and even though I could never stand Po in her seasons, she seems like the least worse of the new three ~even though her gigantic mouth, frequent over enunciations, and huge gap between upper and lower jaw when fake laughing still frightens me.🤭 I can't understand everything the French guy says and he doesn't seem entirely comfortable. (I understand Amaury perfectly on Dessert Masters and like him a lot.) The new woman is too cloying and performative for me; it feels like everything she says is entirely scripted, even when she's just going "10, 9, 8..."

...Other than that, I am enjoying the season. 😁🤣
