Snazzy Daisy March 25 Share March 25 Quote Bunny, Jerry and Arthur plan to confront their neighbor, a populist congresswoman by day, wild party girl by night. Meanwhile, old friends Sybil and Judy get to the bottom of why they've been annoying the hell out of each other lately. ItCouldBeWorse April 2 Share April 2 The opening of this one was confusing. Sybil's complaining on the phone about Judy's chewing and mouth noises, and is actually talking to Judy? It sounded like she was talking about Judy to a 3rd person, because she never used the words "you" or "your" (noise, chewing.) I rewound it twice after she hung up. Sarah 103 April 7 Share April 7 Penny, as a character does not make sense. Based on how Palm Springs has been described so far, it seems like a thriving gay enclave. This makes me seriously wonder how someone with Penny's views would be elected to Congress in that district. Is it a major gay enclave in an ultra-conservative area? That's the only thing that makes sense, but it's also kind of hard to believe. (Roll with it; it's TV is a perfectly acceptable answer) 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/152598-s01e07-love-thy-neighbor/#findComment-8627833

(Roll with it; it's TV is a perfectly acceptable answer) Palm Springs is home to a LOT of senior citizens - I think the median age is about 55, meaning there are a lot of conservative, wealthy retirees in the area, including many conservative gays. I haven't been aware of the specifics of the politics of the area for years, but I do know that Sonny Bono was elected Mayor as a Republican (1988-1992), and then won a US Congressional seat in the mid-90s, where he served until his death in 1998. So it's not that far-fetched that Penny could get herself elected by running a campaign based on appealing to the right-leaning richer residents, whatever her own personal views are. 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/152598-s01e07-love-thy-neighbor/#findComment-8628170

Within the GOP there is a spectrum of beliefs and there are different brands/varieties of Republicans/Conservatism. My issue is that I'm having a hard time believing someone can be so openly homophobic and anti-LGBT, but still get elected/re-elected from a district with what seems like a sizable gay population. My issue is that I'm having a hard time believing someone can be so openly homophobic and anti-LGBT, but still get elected/re-elected from a district with what seems like a sizable gay population. Palm Springs is currently represented by Ken Calvert, a very anti-LGBT Republican. It's a sprawling district, and Palm Springs is just a small, unrepresentative part of it. I hated the part where the politician changed her mind (because it seemed so unrealistic) until I realized that it happened because of blackmail. That's the only way a major politician would make such an abrupt change on a social issue, particularly when the new stance would leave them extremely vulnerable to a primary challenge. On a side note, I was disappointed to see Stephanie Koenig in this episode as the politician. She's talented, and she's good on the show English Teacher, but the controversy over the show's star (her real-life best friend Brian Jordan Alvarez) has reavealed that Alvarez is a sexual predator, and that Koenig does everything in her power to excuse his behavior and gaslight people into thinking it's not a big deal. 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/152598-s01e07-love-thy-neighbor/#findComment-8629336
