This was a bit "ho hum", though it was a watchable hour and a stark improvement over what we had been getting before.

Did the show get a new directive at some point this season that has led to dramatically improved writing, or are we just getting lucky?

I bring up that last part because of this episode planting the seeds of a Bode relapse, of which I will say, in no uncertain terms:

NO. DON'T EVEN GO THERE SHOW. DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT.

Look, Bode's already backslid once already. We don't need to play that story again, and this show is getting far better because they're not retreading the old stories and they're allowing the characters to create new ones.

That is what the show should be doing moving forward. Not backsliding.

Still, it was nice to see some context to the moment it slipped all away for Bode in the first place, and making it up with his old coach was nice, even if the coach gave him drugs when he shouldn't have.

I also quite enjoyed Jake's awkward attempt to come out of his shell and finally ask a woman out. I suppose we'll see where this goes, because Jake said he didn't want a one-night stand, so we'll see if this new love is more than a one-episode wonder.

Then there's Vince, learning to embrace his vulnerability. If I was Sharon, I'd right to question his motives after Vince proposed to her so soon after he proposed to his ex. Vince patching things up by exposing more of his damaged side was a nice touch.

Finally...I guess the guy with the guano was sacrificed to give Bode- and the team- another painful reminder that the reality of emergency work means not everyone makes it.

I guess it works. Feels a little unceremonious, but...I suppose I should commend the show for using a male death to provide some angst instead of using women like many other shows- including this one- did before.

Oh, and one more thing...

I know I talked about backsliding before and Luke brought up Bodiella...well, I'm OK with that because, as much as I want Bode to go with Audrey (sadly MIA in this episode), Bode will have to figure out his love path at some point. I just hope that when he makes that ultimate commitment, it's with Audrey, not Gabriella...so that, at least, maybe Gabby can move on to more meaningful plots.

Did the guy at 3 Rock really die of a cold? It seemed to me that whatever he had, it was a lot more serious than that. I kept wondering if he'd been snakebit. I've had many a cold, and they seem to always be upper respiratory, not with nausea. And not usually with that high of a fever.

I was unhappy that Audrey was away. I don't like the triangle they are setting up.

I was also a bit shocked that the coach gave Bode drugs-- and clearly it wasn't something like ibuprofin. I really wish Bode had gone to Luke or his mother or someone sensible, or just turned them down in the first place, instead of hiding it. If he took them or if he didn't, he should not be harboring the secret. And if he's too injured to work, he should report that, too. IT'S BORING TO DO THIS AGAIN.

It hasn't reallt been that long since Jake's fiancee died, has it? The rule of thumb is usually at least a year before you're starting to get over the death of a partner. I guess it doesn't always work that way IRL or on tv, but I still thought it was a bit much that folks are pressing him to get back out there already.

I wonder if, as soon as he does get into a new relationship that's serious, the almost-daughter will re-appear. That's how tv works. Not real life so much, though.

On the other hand, it's nice to see awkward people be given some hope of finding a match. That's a tv thing that I like, and I hope is realistic and not just a fantasy.

I get why Sharon had questions, but I do also think that after 30 years of being happy together, it's kind of hard to be too worried about it.

Slight correction: Drew wasn't Bode's coach, he was the player on the other team when Bode was injured.  They're the same age (seniors in HS in 2009, so 32-33  now I guess.)   Yeah, I wish Bode had just said thanks but NO thanks to that! When he was sleeping peacefully before the call from Three Rock came in, I got a little worried.

Probably started out as a cold or flu bug, which can go into ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome) pretty quickly.  The guy was a skinny alcoholic, not sober very long, may have had some underlying medical compromises from malnutrition, liver stuff, pancreatitis, who knows.  Also, an impending heart attack can present as stomach symptoms -- and I know this very well, since my husband had two of them that started just like that.  Nausea, vomiting, "breathing felt funny" -- but denied any chest pains.  He survived the first one, 2003.  Sadly, the second one, about 18 months ago, was fatal.  The paramedics, who got there in 7 minutes, assured me I did everything right.  All the good CPR classes I took over my long career kicked in.  Just didn't bring him back.😪

I have a very hard time watching CPR scenes on TV, even now, and I was in tears watching them try to save him (Birch, I think they called him.)  So I can feel for Bode and the nightmares, and I hope he gets (proper!) help.  I was relieved when the boy in the culvert made it, and I was pretty scared when Bode had to be the one to go down after him.  Interesting that the Three Rock guys were allowed to help carry his litter, as I thought they weren't to touch civilians.

BTW, I know Birch went to bed with his cold, and was supposed to go to the infirmary in the morning.  And the crew got called out to dig to the culvert.  So no one checked on him for at least a few hours.  Surely they didn't leave him alone there!  How many guards are normally at Three Rock?  Usually we just see the one, but there must have been at least 2 -- they couldn't leave an inmate unattended in the camp no matter how sick he was -- that's prime escape opportunity there!  I'm going to have to count guards next time.
