Suits LA

Drama

NBC

Suits LA is a Drama TV Series airing on February 23, 2025 on NBC at 9pm. Suits LA is not a direct sequel to the original 2011 Suits TV Series (9 seasons on USA Network), but will be set within the show's universe, so that characters from the original series can make an appearance/crossover, like Harvey Specter does.

Ted Black, a former federal prosecutor from New York, reinvents himself by opening (fifteen years earlier) the Black Lane Law Firm, with his buddy Stuart Lane, specializing in entertainment law, representing the most powerful clients in Los Angeles.

(The Photo in the background is of Ted Black hanging out with Denzel Washington.)

The Black Lane Law Firm's high profile client list includes: Denzel Washington, Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, and Leonardo DiCaprio. The Black Lane Law Firm is at a financial crisis point as the stellar people who work there are overstepping the boundaries of their personal and professional lives and might be placing their own self interests before the law firm's. Ted Black expands to firm's scope to criminal law (a role he has held in contempt his entire career) in order to dig themselves out of the hole. Events from the past, that caused Ted Black to leave behind everything and everyone he loved in New York, are slowly creeping back into his present.

Matt Letscher as Mr. Black, Ted Black's Dad, powerful and emotionally unavailable, he rules through fear, intimidation and abuse.

Carson A. Egan as Eddie Black, Ted Black's Brother, who is sweet, good-humored and nurturing. Ted seems to rely on Eddie’s loving presence even more than Eddie relies on him. Relies on Ted for support.

Stephen Amell as Ted Black, a former federal prosecutor from New York, now representing the most powerful clients in Los Angeles.

Josh McDermitt as Stuart Lane, an energetic, powerful, focused and self-absorbed friend of Ted Black's. They founded Black Lane Law, fifteen years ago, to specialize in entertainment law.

Bryan Greenberg as Rick Dodsen is Ted Black's protege in the entertainment division. Rick is the new guy, determined to be promoted and to stay one step ahead of his rival, Erica Rollins.

Lex-Scott-Davis-Suits-LA-1024x576.jpg

Lex Scott Davis as Erica Rollins is described as a savvy, ambitious, and strong-willed rising star who works for Amell's Ted Black. She's shrewd enough to test the loyalty of her associates only to admire some of them for not having any.

Alice Lee as Leah is a young associate attorney at Black Lane Law who has been assigned to work with/for entertainment attorney Erica Rollins.

Gabriel Macht as Harvey Specter, a successful and charismatic attorney that Ted Black knew when he was a New York District Attorney.

Maggie Grace as Amanda Stevens, an independently wealthy pro bono lawyer who rents space at the Black Lane law firm and, "technically", doesn’t work for Ted, meaning the two are free to “potentially" explore the clear sparks going on between them.

Rachelle Goulding as Samantha, a powerful entertainment lawyer in her own right who runs a new law firm that is competing with Black Lane for top-dog status in Los Angeles. Samantha also Ted Black's ex-girlfriend.

Sofia Pernas as Elizabeth Smith, a powerhouse attorney in the District Attorney’s office who goes up against Ted in a high-profile murder trial.

Kevin Weisman as Lester Thompson is a smart and powerful man who is used to getting his way – that is, until a murder charge forces him to have to listen to others to stay out of prison.

Stephen Amell on Reviving ‘Suits’ for LA Spinoff, Overcoming His ‘Short Fuse’ on ‘Arrow’ and Learning From His Controversial Strike Remarks
By Emily Longeretta   Feb 13, 2025
https://variety.com/2025/tv/news/stephen-amell-suits-la-spinoff-arrow-strike-1236304221/

Quote

By fall, of course, entertainment executives were looking for the next “Suits,” something that could replicate the show’s comforting, low-stakes, addictive vibes. Korsh was ready with an idea. He’d pitched a series about Hollywood agents, not in the “Suits” universe, during the COVID pandemic. NBC passed at the time, then asked him to rework it into a “Suits” spinoff; in the new series, former New York prosecutor Ted Black leads an entertainment law firm, representing A-list clients on the West Coast.

Korsh knew the key to “Suits” was its casting, especially finding the right lead — one who would compare to the original’s but could hold his own. Enter Stephen Amell.

“All I can say about Stephen Amell is that I knew within 12 seconds of his audition that he was Ted Black,” says Korsh. “I was sure of it then, and having worked with him through six episodes, I’m even surer of it now.”
*  *  *
Stephen Amell isn’t unlike Ted Black. He’s confident, and he steps up to help those in need. Yet Ted has a complicated past, and the show’s pilot episode hints at the secrets he’s keeping, including what happened before he landed his fancy Hollywood job.

Amell isn’t wearing a mask anymore, but Ted certainly is.
*  *  *
“Behind closed doors, he’s a scared little boy, and nobody — I mean nobody — knows it,” Amell says. “That’s not a sustainable way to live life. He’s not comfortable in his own skin.”

Amell is still finding his footing, he says. He’s not used to a role that’s more cerebral than physical, one in which he’s not pulling a muscle or stepping aside for a stuntman.

“The only muscle on my body that hurts from shooting this show is my brain,” he says. “You wouldn’t think that you’d be as tired from five heavy, dialogue-rich scenes as you would from a day of stunts, but you are.”

The show’s tone is also challenging, requiring him to strike a balance between its dramatic and comedic elements. The original series found a way to achieve that: Slick, attractive characters delivered crisp legal jargon without coming off overly didactic. Or like a parody.

“Where’s the line between ‘You’re dancing right on the edge’ and ‘This could be an “SNL” sketch’?” Amell says, pondering. “You have to play a character, but not play a caricature. How far do you push it?”
*  *  *
“It’s easier to yell at people and threaten their lives in a gravelly voice with a mask and a hood on than it is to subtly manipulate someone into doing what you want,” Amell says. “The hard, heavy lifting is threading a needle.”

‘Suits LA’ Review: Stephen Amell Flounders in NBC’s Tonally Confused, Narratively Jumbled Legal Drama‘

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-reviews/suits-la-review-stephen-amell-nbc-1236142299/

"When I say the pilot is bad, I don’t just mean on the usual grounds, like bland dialogue or underwritten characters. I mean it’s misguided in respects that make you wonder how any of this came to be. Its single most laughable choice is a high-key bonkers, low-key offensive twist that I am forbidden to reveal here. But there’s plenty of stuff I can talk about that doesn’t work, either."

Suits LA Boss: ‘Harvey Is Not the Only Suits Character We’re Going to See’
By Vlada Gelman   February 26, 2025

“Harvey is not the only Suits original character that we’re going to see this season. There will be at least one other original Suits character. I’m not going to say at what level,” Korsh reveals, adding that he hopes that it’s not advertised when or who may return.

Korsh says his goal is to have any cast members from the USA Network drama — which also starred Patrick J. Adams, Meghan Markle, Gina Torres, Sarah Rafferty and Rick Hoffman, among others — “pop up, as organically as possible, and not flood the show with a parade of old Suits characters.”

“I know that’s what fans want, but I feel like if it’s just a parade of old Suits characters, it would sort of harm the new franchise,” Korsh continues, “and I don’t think it would do a lot of favors to the old franchise either.”

‘Suits LA’ To Get Litt Up As Rick Hoffman Sets Return In NBC Spinoff
By Rosy Cordero   March 5, 2025

EXCLUSIVE: NBC’s Suits LA will welcome Rick Hoffman later this season, reprising the role of Louis Litt he originated in the mothership series, USA Network’s Suits. Sources close to production confirm he will appear in one episode this season with the potential to return for more if NBC picks up the Aaron Korsh-created legal drama for a second season.

Hoffman is the second actor from Suits to return to the universe following Gabriel Macht, who will appear in three episodes this season. Litt and Macht’s Harvey Spector will not coincide in any episodes, we hear.

Suits LA has given us hints of a romantic or at least sexual history between Erica and Rick (played by Lex Scott Davis and Bryan Greenberg). Any scoop on that? –Gail
We asked showrunner Aaron Korsh about said hints, and he explained that “in the original pilot, we had that as a reveal that they used to be together, and they actually end up getting together again in the pilot. But I ended up cutting that scene because I felt like, in classic Suits fashion, it’s better to have them yearning for each other than it is to have them being together. But basically, yes, they used to have a romantic relationship, they don’t anymore, and they’re going to go through the process of deciding if they want to again or not.”

I hear NBC also is considering a second season of Suits: LA despite the spinoff’s below-expectations ratings. It is a high-profile IP for NBCUniversal, and the network already invested a lot in marketing and gave the show additional exposure on Thursday. The numbers are still not great, but there have been a couple of recent rating upticks, including one tied to the return of original Suits star Gabriel Macht, that would likely earn the show more time with a renewal while it is evolving its tone and pace to more closely resemble the mothership series.

The show was a hot mess, but I hoped they'd give it a second run of 13 episodes to allow it to find its groove. The characters were unlikeable, the stories were just uninteresting or silly, there was almost no courtroom drama (face it, that's what makes legal shows compelling viewing), and they spent far too much time on the NY past.

I can't understand why the showrunners thought entertainment law would be a good focus here. Suits (original recipe) was the story of Mike Ross vs Harvey Specter. Their special relationship made me want to watch it every week, and the supporting cast fleshed out the firm in a compelling way. We wanted to root for Mike's work for the little guy and watch PSL's other staff, associates, and stories build the firm. There was none of that here. The acting was forced, the cases were weak, and I just didn't give a rat's ass about any of the main characters.

I think there's still potential for moving forward in the Suits universe if they just go back to the original New York practice with a couple of OG characters and some new talent, but it would have to find a way to replace the Harvey/Mike plot with a new Dynamic Duo. Bring in more criminal cases and of course more David vs Goliath plots.

I am not surprised this show was cancelled.  Just didn't have the same magic as the original.  It didn't help that almost all of the characters were unlikeable or trying too hard to be like characters from the original series.  Ted was like Harvey, wonder man in charge.  Stuart was like Louis, always angry and nasty.  Nice guy Rick was like nice guy Mike.  The office manager Rosalyn tried way too hard to be like tough as nails and in charge Donna.

I fully agree that the 2010 New York scenes were confusing and hard to follow.  I think the show felt that these flashbacks were necessary in order to explain the backstory between the interactions amongst Ted, Stuart and Samantha.  And I think that was a big failing of the show.  We got dropped into the middle of the storyline, there was all this history between the characters.  I guess the show producers thought we would be hungry to peel the onion and reveal new layers to the storyline.  When all this did (at least for me) was to just confuse me and make me care less.

NBC Execs on Why ‘Suits LA’ Was Canceled After Just One Season: ‘It’s Not Showing the Potential to Grow’
By Michael Schneider   May 12, 2025
https://variety.com/2025/tv/news/nbc-execs-why-suits-la-canceled-after-one-season-1236393265/

Quote

“Suits LA” landed with a thud, both critically and in the ratings. Nonetheless, pundits thought NBC would give it more time, given how much stock it put into reviving the franchise. But Jeff Bader, the president, program planning strategy, NBCUniversal Entertainment, told reporters this weekend that the network just didn’t see any life moving forward on “Suits LA”

“It’s so hard to talk about shows and which ones you bring back, and ’Suits’ had a very short run, but it really just has not resonated the way we thought it would,” Bader said. “There can be many, many reasons why, people are speculating why it hasn’t resonated, but it’s just not really showing the potential to grow for us in the future, unfortunately.

“And it’s those decisions we had to make,” he added. “We had to look at the performance of the shows, both on linear and on digital. We had to see the ones that looked like they had growth potential in the future. So we’re looking at how stable they are on their linear performance, how stable they are on digital, which ones are growing and which ones are declining. And we had to make some hard decisions.”

Bader said NBCU takes a look at every show canceled on the network to see if there might be reason to move the show to streaming on Peacock. “We always talk about which shows might have a life on Peacock, if they’re not on NBC, we have that conversation about every show,” he said.

But in the case of “Suits LA” and all of the shows that were canceled last week, there doesn’t appear to be a move to Peacock in the offing.
