S02.E03:  Psychological Something-ism

Quote

Jimmy and Brian help Grace deal with unexpected news. Paul and Julie face her past. Liz worries she's come between Sean and his dad.

Every character gets a chance to act out on this show it seems.

Now Alice gets to express her grief, first stalking Not Roy Kent and then getting messy with Liz's son, whom she had handed over to her friend in the previous episode.

Liz was relatively toned down this episode, though she thought she was doing Derek a favor by selling her share of the food truck to Derek's father, without asking him first.

Julie and Paul go visit Julie's husband, who's in a home with dementia.

Looks like they're going for the heartwarming, kind of a point which Ted Lasso reached.

There's kind of a sameness about all of Bill Lawrence's shows, Scrubs, Ted Lasso, Shrinking, Bad Monkey.

The characters all act out, say and do outlandish things, but they're all good people.

Tedious.

I think season two has been knocking it out of the park. Everyone is realistically flawed and make dumb mistakes, but actually talk about their feelings and communicate. I love it!

Do not like Alice self sabotaging herself after showing some growth, but it makes sense. She really wasn’t ready to confront the drunk driver, and now she’s going to throw away her friendship.

Do as I say, not as I do, eh?   For a show about a bunch of psychologists, they are all so generally bad about talking to each other.

And I get Liz was trying to go a good thing, but I agree with Sean...fuck you Liz.  How dare she make a huge change to their business without talking to him about it first.   I don't care how good her intentions are, that was reckless.

Alice not being able to stop herself from going to see the person who killed her mom but absolutely not being able to handle it.  And because Brett will never not be Roy Kent to me, my brain can't handle him being so meek in communication while someone else tells fuck you at him over and over again.   Does not compute.  😂

Loved the final dinner with Jimmy, Brian and his hubby.  From my complaint above...two who actually had it out, shared their grievances and then were able to come through after the drama and fighting...and were better for it.  Jimmy heard him and made a needed move to be a better friend to Brian.  Progress!

So far this season is really great. They made Paul more a 3 dimensional character and not just grumpy as he was in last season. All the characters are continuing their great arc from last season with a decent addition of not-Roy Kent so far. I am sure we will find out his story soon enough.

The only thing that seems to be starting to bug me is they are turning Jimmy into a punching bag and that isn't sitting with me very well. Even Gaby, my favourite character on the series is still mad that at him, and that is starting to bother me as well.

I really look forward to this show. I think it's very well-done over all.

But the problems I had with season one are still there. Bill Lawrence remains obsessed with creepy relationships and inappropriate boundaries. I'm thrilled that Paul found a new neurologist, so that he's no longer dating his doctor, but what on earth was that scene where they visited her husband in the memory care facility? What the hell kind of person would tell a man with dementia, "You're married, and thanks for letting me screw your wife?"

(For the record, I'm not objecting to the idea of someone dating when their spouse has dementia. I'm objecting to subjecting the putting the spouse with dementia in that unbelievably awkward situation.)

And why is Jimmy giving Grace therapy with Brian in the room? Combining his therapy sessions with Brian's legal strategy sessions is really out there.

Aside from that, another issue is that Liz remains absolutely unbearable. Derek seems like a reasonably level-headed guy - did he really not tell her that her terrible plan to sell her share of the food truck was terrible? Sean's dad seems like a reasonably level-headed guy, too. Didn't he ask if this was okay with Sean?

I like Gaby, but they make her really hard to take some times. Yelling at Paul without knowing what was going on? Telling Derek that he isn't allowed to see Jimmy? Accosting Jimmy to see his underwear? It's all too much. Get over yourself.

On the plus side, I'm glad we're seeing more of Summer.
