2024 and a show still is doing the "male boss is away, female miniboss is now in charge, male grunts give her a hard time" storyline?  And then when the boss comes back, he basically told her she did the wrong things?  Whatever.

She's already apparently the only lieutenant in the North Shore contingent, so wouldn't she already have earned some degree of respect from the lifeguards?

The characters I like the most are Will, Laka, and Em.  I hope we get more backstory on each of them.  What are their backgrounds?  How did Will get from Australia to Hawaii?  How did Em get to be a lieutenant when she and Will appear to be about the same age (mid to late 30s)?  Why is he still just a grunt?  Why are there no other lifeguards about their age?

The character I like the least is the Captain.  Obviously the whole team knows that his nephew died, but I think only Em knows the extent to which it is affecting him.  He's obviously not fit for duty if he freezes up like that.  It's sad for him, but three episodes in and I am already tiring of this storyline.  Either go to counseling or not, but how many times do we need to see him thinking about it and waffling?  It's annoying.

I like Hina Alexander, but I can't stand the permascowl and furrowed brow on Emerson.

Agreed. He's definitely not fit for duty at this point. Collapsing on the beach due to mental trauma should be a huge red flag. And then for him to only be off a couple of days and not attend therapy?  I just have this bad feeling we're gonna get a story line where someone almost dies during a rescue because of his freeze ups and then he'll finally go to therapy.

It seemed to me that they might be going with an undiagnosed physical issue, like heart, or diabetes, or cancer, etc.

Didn't Em ask him when his last physical was and he said "last week"?  I would guess they're ruling out a physical issue.  Still though, returning to work just a couple days later after his collapse without seeing a doctor or therapist isn't right.

I thought maybe "last week" the doctor did find something or maybe ordered tests.

But he talked to his friend! Who told him to stop talking and just get over it!  Such healthy portrayal of mental health...

(Please note the sarcasm.)
