Snazzy Daisy March 27 Author Share March 27 Sugar Review: Colin Farrell Delivers a Sweet Blast of Retro Sleuthing Quote A stylishly shot throwback to classic film noir with lean and mean storytelling and smart and lively dialogue, Sugar doesn’t attempt to reinvent the wheel… but it makes a pretty great wheel just the same. Snazzy Daisy March 28 Author Share March 28 ‘Sugar’ Review: Colin Farrell Stars in an Apple TV+ Mystery Series That Nearly Drowns in Coyness About Its Big Reveal Quote The search for Olivia is the story. But it’s not the story that most viewers will be investing in. ‘Sugar’ Review: Colin Farrell Plays a Film Nerd Detective in Beguiling Apple Series Quote Structurally, the way some of these questions are answered — and the way that they set up what might happen in a possible second season — makes these first eight episodes of “Sugar” feel a bit like an extended pilot, like something that an older network show would have tied up in under two hours before sending Sugar on future cases of the week. Sugar is a Frustrating Noir With Nowhere to Go Quote The series is far too cautious in revealing what it’s really about, and by the time the twists are unveiled, it’s too late for the audience to care. It’s the most frustrating form of the mystery box: a show that believes its mysteries are more interesting than they are. Link to comment
Snazzy Daisy March 28 Author Share March 28 Sugar Review: Colin Farrell Leads One Of The Best Neo-Noir Thrillers In Years In Apple TV+ Show Quote Sugar upends genre tropes, delivering a compelling, unpredictable neo-noir story with visually engaging style. Despite season 2 teasing, the show leaves a few too many questions unanswered, but generally balances its intriguing world-building with meaningful character development. A plot twist for the ages in wild new Colin Farrell series Quote It’s playful and weird and intellectual, until it all but disappears around episode three and the series prioritises a flimsy plot that feels like any free-to-air crime procedural. In episode six the plot twist is revealed and it’s a doozy. In a forgiving mood Sugar’s an ambitious swing and a heady head-scratcher – and, to be fair, there’s more intrigue in the bizarre places the series might go next than in the eight episodes it takes to reveal itself. Colin Farrell’s ‘Sugar’ Has a Disastrous Bombshell Twist Quote Up until its ruinous stunt, “Sugar” does boast an excellent performance from Farrell as an enigmatic private detective. Link to comment
Rickster April 7 Share April 7 Watched the first two episodes yesterday. Really enjoying it, but I’m very wary of where this is heading, based on the teasing of a shocking plot twist in all the publicity. Link to comment

30 Helens June 5 Share June 5 Loved this show. Hope enough others did to warrant a renewal. I shared my thoughts in the Episode 8 thread. I know there were critics who felt the secret was withheld too long, although I disagree. I liked figuring it out along the way. It was part of the overall mystery. And now that everyone knows, the story can progress however it needs to. I haven't been this invested in a new show in a long time. If anyone had told me the actual story elements ahead of time, I probably wouldn't have watched. But they pulled it off spectacularly, and I will be waiting impatiently for the next chapter. There's nothing wrong with mixing genres, as long as you do it right! 3 Link to comment
