Quote When O'Malley was writing the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels they were set in the then-present day, one with lots of record stores and far fewer cell phones. That era is now historic although O'Malley says viewers should not overly trouble themselves with the show's temporal placement. "I always say it takes place in 'Scott Pilgrim time,'" he explains. "It's become its own mythological realm. The movie did that. Edgar always called it 'the Amelie version of Toronto.' The show is building off that beautiful dreamy version of the city." Spoiler A scene with Gideon and Matthew Patel in a big, evil room filled with monitors observing Scott. They confirm that the Evil Exes will get more to do, plus character interactions that weren't present in any other adaptation. Gideon The Cat is in it! The Katayanagi Twins have their robots again! The Guardian gave it 4/5 stars: Quote If there was a temptation to take the extra space offered by eight TV episodes to adapt more of the source material, O’Malley and his series co-writer, BenDavid Grabinski, have resisted it. Instead, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off shifts gears and rockets away on a different trajectory. The producers have requested that there be no spoilers on exactly when and how things diverge from the original. But it takes place at a natural break point and is all the better for it. It is more of a remix than a reboot. The new direction turns the series into a rollicking ensemble piece rather than a hero’s journey (Scott is a sweetheart but can be a little self-involved). The Vulture review is spoilery, but here's the takeaway: Quote This new anime series, though, operates on a whole new wavelength. It finds O’Malley returning to Scott Pilgrim after more than a decade, this time in collaboration with the writer-director BenDavid Grabinski (Happily) and the critically acclaimed Japanese animation studio Science SARU (Devilman: Crybaby, Inu-Oh, Star Wars: Visions). It also, miraculously, features the return of the movie’s entire cast, but it’s worth noting here that Scott Pilgrim Takes Off isn’t the redux it first seems to be. PurpleTentacle November 19, 2023 Share November 19, 2023 (edited) So correct me if I'm wrong, but in the original story, Scott won that first fight and fought all of Ramona's other exes after that, correct? This seems to be an alternate history, where Scott loses the first fight, gets kidnapped and Ramona has to talk to (and fight some of) her evil exes to get him back. Trini November 21, 2023 Share November 21, 2023 I'm up to episode 5 -- Wow, BOLD move to ... Spoiler ... just delete the title character from the narrative. And now the title makes sense. So they clearly wanted to do some new things and explore some new/different character interactions. And some of those were great, and I was on board with that ... until episodes 4 & 5 where it just got weird. Yes, 'ha ha' at the meta jokes, but episode 5 especially felt like a waste of time that hardly moved the story along. I hope they got that out of their system and the remaining episodes are better. I mostly didn't mind the 'zigs and zags'; I was already expecting a different perspective/take on the story. I was NOT expecting a completely different story. I still think that the episodes on the movie set were the low points. I did like that it ended on a hopeful note for everyone. Lots of fun jokes; and I appreciated the nods to the movie. Just to expand on this a bit -- I do see the appeal of (the creator who is more mature now) wanting to do a version of the story where Ramona actually deals with her baggage instead of Scott literally killing everyone. But again, (a) I don't think they needed to hide that; and (b) I think Scott could have been more involved, instead of mostly absent. Link to comment
