Performer of the Week: Norman Reedus

THE PERFORMER | Norman Reedus

THE SHOW | AMC’s The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon

THE EPISODE | “Deux Amours” (Oct. 8, 2023)

THE PERFORMANCE | We owe the star of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon an apology. Reedus, who spent 11 seasons on the mothership before being given his own spinoff, is so consistent — and consistently compelling — that over the years, we have come to take for granted the subtlety with which he blends the gruffness and vulnerability that make his character so beloved. That’s on us.

This week, however, we hope to right our wrong, at least a little bit, by properly appreciating the actor’s performance in his series’ penultimate Season 1 episode. As so often is the case, he allowed Daryl’s sensitive side to peek through his tough-guy facade. There was a softness to Reedus’ eyes as his alter ego observed ward Laurent and worried that Sister Isabelle had raised him to be weak. That same tenderness was on display in Daryl’s dealings with the boy. Reedus kept his tone of voice matter-of-fact but in a gentle way that invited acceptance rather than ignited upset.

But the moment in which Reedus shined the brightest was the one in which Daryl discovered that Laurent had set adrift their getaway boat. First, our embattled protagonist raged at the child, with Reedus throwing words like they were punches. Then, when Laurent explained that he had only done what he had for fear of losing his protector, Daryl’s anger dissipated in spectacular fashion, his portrayer’s lip trembling from the sudden transition from fury to understanding.

It was, as they would put it in Daryl’s home away from home, c’est magnifique. (See for yourself in the video at the top of this post.)

Maybe it’s for the best that the fifth Walking Dead spinoff didn’t capitalize on the chemistry that we all some of us saw developing between young Laurent’s de-facto parent figures. Viewers didn’t seem to agree that Norman Reedus and Clémence Poésy’s characters felt more for one another than mere friendship.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon (Season 1, Episode 2)
...
We knew what was coming, of course, when the Walking Dead spinoff flashed back to the night that deceased Parisians began reanimating. But what we couldn’t have imagined was just how magnifique the sequence would be, especially as played from the viewpoint of the luminous Clémence Poésy’s Isabelle. — C.M.

Norman Reedus: Motorbikes Are My Freedom

Let’s talk about Daryl Dixon. As part of my research for this chat, I found an interview from 2011 where you said you hoped to play this role for a long time. And here we are, in 2024, so that went pretty well. How much longer would you like to continue to play this part?

I think maybe six or seven more years. The Daryl Dixon spin-off has given me an opportunity to take the show in a direction that’s different to the original show. I didn’t want to make the same show again in a different location. I wanted to reinvent it. And they let me, with the other like-minded people involved, invent something new. So it feels fresh to me. It’s in a different language. It’s shot a different way. It’s not really about zombies, and who’s going to get bit this week, it’s completely different. So as long as I keep reinventing it, it’s fun.

We went to Paris, and we didn’t want to make an American show and drop it in a European country, not have it reflect anything of the place that we were filming it at. So we wanted the French people to look at it and feel like it was their show, too. And it worked. French people love the show. So I’m excited for them to see season two [released in September].

"We pick up where we left off. It's interesting shooting this show outside of Georgia. We sort of picked up these two characters and we recreated the world around them. So to watch Melissa come to Europe to kick as I've been waiting. As far as the production side I'm involved," Norman Reedus reflected of Daryl Dixon season 3.

But, as for season 2, Reedus spoke a bit about Daryl's mindset: "Part of him wonders, 'Has he been gone so long, have they forgotten about him?' There's a cosmic energy between him and Carol but he's losing that feeling."

‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon’ Renewed for Third Season, Starring Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride, Ahead of Season 2 Premiere

“The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” has been renewed for a third season at AMC ahead of Season 2, “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon — The Book of Carole.” The announcement was made at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday.

The spinoff series will be produced and set in Spain, with production based in Madrid and extensive location shooting planned in the Galicia, Aragon, Catalonia and Valencia regions.
*  *  *
As for the third season, Carol and Daryl will continue their journey towards home and the ones they love. As they struggle to find their way back, the path takes them farther astray, leading them through distant lands with ever-changing and unfamiliar conditions as they witness the various effects of the Walker apocalypse.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled to announce a third season and to be working side by side with the brilliant Melissa McBride,” Reedus said in a press release. “Season 2 is some of my favorite storytelling of this series. Watching Melissa shine along with our brilliant cast and crew has been one of my fondest memories playing this character. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did making it and we can’t wait to keep the story going.”

“I’m really appreciating the new challenges for Daryl and Carol being so far from all they’ve ever known… what it means for them, what it brings for each of them, apart and together,” McBride shared. “There’s still so much ahead to unpack in France for the coming season two, and a breathtaking finale. And now Spain! I already know that David Zabel’s storytelling is making the most of all that is so beautiful and unique to Spain. We start shooting there in just a few weeks… such excitement looking forward!”

While very much moving the story forward, Season 2 (which premieres on AMC Sunday, Sept. 29) also pays its respects to the past. In fact, issues that we may have thought had been dealt with years ago turn out to be as fresh as an open wound.

NYCC 2024: 'The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon' cast and crew discuss the bond between Daryl and Carol

Producer and star Norman Reedus believes the core of Carol and Daryl’s profound friendship goes far back to the early days of the original series: “The thing I like about those two together is — you know, the original show was about Rick. And you had all those characters around Rick. But these two characters always have been checking up on each other since day one, right? Sophia goes missing. We always had this connection that’s always been very honest.”

According to The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Executive Producer Scott M Gimple, the credit belongs to Frank Darabont. “I think it’s interesting because Daryl wasn’t in the graphic novel, and that friendship was developed in season two [of the original The Walking Dead series] by Frank Darabont, who developed that entire season.”

“You know, when the premiere episode [of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon] aired this year they had a little show afterward that was “The Return” that had them talking about their favorite scenes and episodes. And I watched it like — My mouth was on the floor because you forget about how grounded and the DNA of these two characters and how they became friends. It was so good. The show was so great in building that dynamic. And I think season two solidified that relationship between the two when Daryl went off to find Sophia.”

Reedus said the long history makes the relationship feel earned, which allows even little, subtle moments to resonate with fans across dramatic and more comedic scenes.  “There’s, like, hidden, little smirks and things that are real. You know what I mean?”

As for what audiences can expect from Carol this season, “I wouldn’t say a whole lot has changed,” Melissa McBride said. “I think she is just on a new mission, as we are getting to see more of her bag of tricks. I don’t think she’s ever been pushed this far as when Sophia, when she lost Sophia. It’s really fun to play and great to explore this part of Carol.”
