When S.W.A.T.’s armored vehicle is stolen, the squad must team up with FBI Agent Vasquez, a former LAPD officer who was once denied a position on the S.W.A.T. team, to stop the vehicle from being used in a potential terrorist attack. Also, Hondo and Nischelle prepare for their baby’s gender reveal party.

That's one way to do a call-back.

The original 1975 series featured a character also named "McCabe", who was- like Christina Alonso was- a sniper. I'm guessing when the show was reimagined, they decided, for some reason, against simply gender-flipping McCabe, because they could have done that.

They race-flipped Deacon and Hondo, so anything is possible.

Anyway, someone was missing from the original crew, and I'm sure fans of the original series began wondering when we'd see McCabe again.

Here we are...with McCabe running a fake SWAT crew that stole Black Betty (another reference, I'm assuming, to the original, which also had a "Betty" who I assume was Hondo's wife in the original). They were, admittedly, a bit bland and a bit lucky too, plus there was no way in Episode 3 that we'd lose Black Betty, but at least the show sold the urgency of the situation well with the right pacing and beats.

Vasquez, in particular, was annoying. Jessica Camancho did really well playing her and playing all the storyline beats that were required of her, but the writers had her behaving way too much to support the plot. I also have to wonder why Hicks and Hondo would so quickly put their trust back in her after she violated it so badly.

Still, the actress was a joy to watch, which was the most I could ask of her.

The subplot with the gender reveal was better. I especially appreciated how SWAT solved the problem of the misplaced envelope...I won't spoil it for those who would want to watch it later. It was that good.

A solid effort that was essentially the sum of its parts.

TJ's legacy can't get a break. After all these years he finally returns to SWAT  In the Samuel L. Jackson movie he also turned bad.

I guess McCabe isn't as cool as Street or Luca and he didn't pickup a nickname like Hondo or Deac. Which is why it was dropped to make room for Alonso and Tan.

Hondo: “Betty is gone. We lost her.”

Luca: “I got nowhere else to be. With Betty gone, I’m not sure what to do.”

The way they talked about Betty, so affectionately weird… 😆

I was screaming at Deacon re that gender reveal envelope - “Damn Deac, put it in the locker !!!” 🤦🏻‍♀️
