S01.E09: ...And the Night to Remember

I am left to wonder if this show could have survived if it was not so unapologetically pro-Black and pro-LGBTQ, and that makes me sort of sad.

Don't get me wrong: the writing could have been a lot better in general, but I bet a lot of potential viewers were turned off by those things. Has there been in any of the nine episodes a single white character who was not compromised beside the Swift family doctor, who only existed to be a sacrificial lamb?

Anyway, lots of stuff about this episode didn't seem to make a lot of sense to me. Maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention but...

1. How did Susanah know that Barton was feeding Tom gay-conversion gummies? (I'm assuming that it is true, but maybe it's a fakeout, and he'll realize it later).

2. Why did/does Susanah want SwiftInsight or whatever it's called? How did she even know about it, let alone have it apparently be a cornerstone of her plan?

3. Why did she blow up two of her minions but leave the minion with lines alive (other than because of course she does for genre reasons). Minion with lines was just as big a failure as the other two. Either keep all the minions alive or kill them all.

4. I'm not sure if I can handwave Susanah's being willing to let Tom have access to the capsule pieces she has.

5. Tom letting Susanah go when they just caught her having killed the two people in the wine cellar, when they have unlocked her PDA which presumably has even more incriminating dirt, when she's exhausted from having undergone the memory deal and when they could probably prevent her from calling in more minions or take her to an undisclosed location doesn't make much sense.

6. Zenzi is awfully willing to take Eskol at his word that he was forced to be a murderer.

7. Does the love interest in this episode have any basis for believing that he and Tom were serious? It seemed like their one date that we saw was at the gala like back in episode 1 or something, and I could be remembering incorrectly but that very much seemed like first date stuff.

8. So is Would-be Boyfriend part of the Road Back or just a sucker who was used by Susanah?

I think Susannah played that guy for a sucker, and that she faked the text message asking for Swiftsight. I'm not sure what she wants with it.

I thought Tom and company let her go because he threatened to bring a whole lot of backup henchmen to storm the place. Plus they didn't want to deal with the dead bodies. It was interesting that Susannah chose to be direct instead of using more subterfuge. She had a lot of revelations about her family and the vitamins. Could her parents have told her about Barton modifying the vitamins?

It was good to finally see Barton again; his presence even in memory, has been on the backburner a long time. I liked seeing Tom display some genuine emotion other than smugness. I totally understand him wanting to abandon the rescue. Zenzi and Isaac can explain later that they continued the mission so that Tom can maybe confront his dad in person about the anti-gay vitamin. I think Barton did it sneakily without telling his wife about it, so she wouldn't know the truth.

I more mean, letting Susanah go because there may or may not be more Road Back people who show up before the cops and additional private security or before they can get out of Dodge doesn't quite add up IMO. Especially when as things stood, the Road Back had little reason to think anything was amiss.

I guess if you have the mindset of "We can't trust anyone because anyone could be a member of the Road Back," it might make sense to be defeatist. But the show hasn't really demonstrated that the Road Back is so powerful and influential that calling the cops to report multiple murders that there is pretty clear proof of isn't a good move.

Susannah really played Tom's not boyfriend like a fiddle, it makes me very much wonder if she was lying to Tom about his dad feeding him anti gay pills. How could she know that? It could be true, or it could be that there was something else going on, like maybe the drugs were supposed to suppress super powers like the ones his cousin has. It did lead to Tom showing about as many emotions as he has all season, its too bad for him that its massive feelings of betrayal.

Susannah seems like a good villain, like Tom she is also a brilliant heir to a billion dollar tech empire with issues regarding her parents, and is also probably too cocky for her own good. I also think that she is genuine about think that she's in the right, although it also seems like a lot of it is just because she has issues with her mom and dad for giving her smart people pills.

So many characters get set up and then disappear for awhile, it makes it a bit hard to keep track of everyone. It looks like they have a lot to wrap up before the finale, I am guessing that a lot of it will lead into the next season. I have enjoyed this show, really, but I was really hoping for more science and less conspiracy thriller.

Unfortunately, the CW cancelled the show and it seems doubtful that there will be any other networks willing to pick it up. They advertised next week as "the series finale."

I'm assuming she got access to the records about the "smart gummies", and maybe she found something that linked Barton to the modification?

I can't remember (and I don't feel like re-watching) if they said the gummies were directly developed by her parents/their company or someone else.
