I love to hide them, to be like, giving small pebbles [that lead] to the ‘big’ thing. So it was really tricky. It was really tricky to make the episode work.” Edited October 3 by tv echo Link to comment

And “what’s so great about sci-fi is that it’s so inclusive. It’s all about being a misfit and the misfit saving the day. And I think anyone can relate to that. I think at times in our lives, we all feel like the misfit. And that’s kind of my favorite thing about sci-fi.” * * * “When they told me they wanted me to be the captain of a spaceship, I was like, I’m sorry, have you met me? Like, what? It’s such a small group of women captains.” That is another super important thing for Burke, that the character of Sharon Garnet is written in a way that feels like she is going against stereotype. “When I first got the pilot and read it, I thought it was a man. I didn’t know that I was auditioning for Garnet. I think that’s a testament to the incredible writers that we have. But also, you know, I think it’s about time that we see a woman who’s multidimensional, who fails, who isn’t always the best version of herself, who doesn’t always get it right.” * * * “When I first signed on to this project, I was like, I don’t want Garnet to be a sex symbol. I want her to be a leader. So, we don’t wear a lot of makeup on the show. My hair is tied back. Dean and Jonathan jumped on board with that. Like, let’s show a real, honest, truthful version of someone trying to prove to everyone that she’s worthy of leading the ship.” Edited October 1 by tv echo 1 Link to comment

And that's kind of where we end up at the end of this, is actually ‘launching’ the series of The Ark as a search-and-rescue mission. And that suddenly opens the door for all kinds of adventures; all kinds of different ways of telling the story.” * * * “That's the fun of science fiction!” says Devlin — without spoiling any answers, of course. “It really is endless where you can go in science fiction. What process determined how the actors played their clones and how they distinguished them from the main characters? Glassner: It was Reece who had to do that. He plays Lane and Ian. He did it, and I got to give credit where it is due. All I said was to make sure they're completely different and I asked him to try to pick a different dialect of English to help differentiate them. He sent me a bunch of them he could do, and we picked the one he ended up with. That's where we ended up. * * * I wanted to expand upon episode ten because I felt it was one of the most powerful episodes of the season. It involved Garnet and Ian getting caught in their life simulation. With such a wide range of emotions from Christie and Reece playing that life together, I can only imagine the challenge both actors had to endure with the rapport Garnet and Lane had already built, and then Reese having to hit the reset button and almost having to play catch up as Ian on end. Can you tell me how that episode was planned out and if the actors had any difficulties? Glassner: They are both incredibly talented actors, and we knew they could do it from the start. The one thing I think helped them a little was they got to shoot it in order, which is what you usually don't do on television; we made an exception because of the makeup effects we had to do. It was a gradual progression, and they didn't have to go, "No way. Where am I now," which is commonly the problem in that when you're doing something like that. * * * Samantha Glasser has been quite an interesting wildcard for 'The Ark' as Kelly Fowler. As far as finding the balance between humanity and the automation side of what she was programmed from the experimentation of her character. Was there any inspiration in her redemption story and how it's played out with her? Devlin: I remember growing up, there was a Ralph Bakshi cartoon called 'Wizards' (1977). I don't know if you ever saw 'Wizards,' but it's fantastic. It features this killer robot who has a change of life and goes from being villainous to heroic. That's always been in my mind as this character developed, and she's a brutal murderer who was traumatized by her mother, had her body altered, and committed horrible crimes. You ask if a character like that can redeem herself. The writers found an amazing story for her to open this window of empathy for her. Sam's performance is spectacular, and we couldn't have given her a harder part to play. She found such nuance in the character and yet never betrayed the trauma this character went through. Even in her happiest moments, you can still feel how damaged she is. That storyline was so much fun to explore and to watch it evolve. Glassner: She's a humanized version of the question we're all living with right now, "If a self-driving car kills somebody, is the programmer at fault, or is the person who crossed in front of the car at fault?" If I kill somebody, is it the programmer's fault? It's that humanized. Edited October 5 by tv echo 1 Link to comment

What was on your minds for the Season 2 finale? Did you feel it had to be as big or bigger than what you'd done before? Jonathan Glassner: Not necessarily, but very different than last season. We felt we couldn't just arrive at another planet and blow it up. Or [the planet] was not really what it was supposed to be. It felt like that would be repeating ourselves. So it's very different than last season. * * * Speaking of murder, The Ark Season 2 added to the ranks of shocking TV character deaths -- most notably Lane, although actor Reece Ritchie got to stay around as his clone, Ian. As showrunners, how did you decide it was right to make that choice, and was there a limit where you felt you'd gone to that well enough? Glassner: That's the real balance. We don't want anyone to feel safe, because the tension is not real to the audience if they know nobody can die. Every once in a while, we have to show them something, show them that somebody can die. And we usually make that decision based on future stories and where we're going with that character, and what we've already accomplished for that character. Conversely, which characters on The Ark do you feel grew the most in Season 2? Is there anyone that you felt had a remarkable season? Devlin: For me, that would be Brice [played by Richard Fleeshman] . In Season 1, he was really just kind of this romantic cowboy. And I feel like we really flesh him out a lot more in Season 2. Glassner: I think our two young ones have evolved quite a bit. Alicia and Angus have grown up on the show, so I would say them together. Edited October 7 by tv echo 1 Link to comment

"What if all of Season 1 and Season 2 is a pilot and the beginning of Season 3 is when the series begins. The idea is that the Ark is not just a lifeboat, it's a search and rescue boat. So we've got this new home planet that we don't really know that much about, but we're going to have to travel to multiple galaxies to see who survived and can we bring them home. So that opens the door to every kind of adventure you can imagine.” Glassner certainly hopes the series is given a green light by SYFY for a third outing as he has a universe of additional tales to tell. "The fun is going to be in two places now instead of one," he adds. "We're going to be following the people on the ship and the people on the planet and their adventures. Of course a planet with that much vegetation has got to have maybe some other life that they're going to have to encounter so we'll see where it goes." 10 Predictions for THE ARK Season 3 Melody McCune October 8, 2024 https://www.geekgirlauthority.com/the-ark-season-3-predictions-theories-syfy-dean-devlin-christie-burke-reece-ritchie-richard-fleeshman/ Quote We’ll Find Out Who Maddox Was Supposed to Meet * * * The Garnet and Ian Ship Will Set Sail * * * The Juno Project Plot Will Return * * * We’ll Finally Meet Some Aliens * * * Ark 1 Will Find the Ross 128B Colony Completely Wiped Out * * * We’ll Meet More Clones * * * A Larger Threat Will Eclipse Maddox * * * Kelly Will Graduate From Her Cell and Find Her Place * * * We’ll Meet the Friends and Loved Ones of Our Crew * * * Relationship Drama With a Capital “D” Edited October 10 by tv echo 1 Link to comment

Its viewership is down year-over-year based on what ratings numbers are available, averaging less than 250K viewers per episode as opposed to over 400K per ep in its first year. That is a typical trend for second-year shows, though, especially for Syfy seeing as that network does very little to promote its originals. The showrunners do have plans for a third season, but I would put its chances as a toss-up at this point and I am moving this one to Bubble status. Fans should certainly make some noise on the social networks to bring this one more attention and improve its chances of getting renewed. 1 Link to comment

tv echo October 28 Share October 28 (edited) The Ark Showrunners Explain How Seasons 1 & 2 Were Just A Prologue To The Sci-Fi Series' Actual Beginning Rachel Foertsch Oct 27, 2024 https://screenrant.com/the-ark-season-2-finale-dean-devlin-jonathan-glassner-interview/ Quote Kelly ends up rescuing Catherine and killing Maddox, which is a very different choice than the one she made last finale. Was that arc always supposed to come full circle? Dean Devlin: Remember she's not just saving her. She's saving her from her mother doing what she did to her. It's almost like she's saving herself in that moment, which is, I think, what makes it so powerful. Are the people from Ark One going to accept her going forward? Jonathan Glassner: Maybe. At one point, we tried that and found that I don't think she's earned it yet. She killed a lot of people and did some pretty awful things, so she's still got a little work to do, I think. Dean Devlin: But she's getting there. * * * The crew has finally found a habitable planet, but Garnet and some other characters go back to the ship to look for the other Arks. Given the title, is space exploration always meant to be the through-line? Dean Devlin: To a very real degree, all of season 1 and all of season 2 is the pilot episode. That the actual series begins at the beginning of season 3, because the Arc is not just a lifeboat, it is a search and rescue vehicle, and now there's a new home to bring them to. But is the home everything they hope it is? Are there problems on this home that they don't know about? And where are they going, and where are they finding people, and are they finding who they're supposed to find? Or are they having other kinds of adventures? Who are they bringing back to the planet? So now we have a show where it's going to be a lot less predictable than what we've done before. It can't be "disaster of the week," and we don't want it to be. It's really going to be a show where any kind of science fiction concept that we want to explore, we'll have a way to do it. * * * Eva and Brice and Alicia and Angus have both become such strong, stable couples. Is that why you chose to separate them and put them on different paths at the end of season 2? Jonathan Glassner: Remember, they're not permanently separated. The idea is for Arc One to go rescue people and bring them back to home base. So, barring a disaster on either side, they'll see each other again. It's just a matter of time. So we separated them just because it gives us some good conflict to play next season and because you've got to throw things at your couples in a drama. [Laughs] So that's why, but they're not apart for good. It wasn't a permanent goodbye. The last few seconds tease the possibility of higher life. What does this mean for the people on Trappist and their storyline in a hopeful third season? Jonathan Glassner: I'll tell you, we felt like, frankly, because of production reasons, we can't afford to do a completely alien planet like we did in Episode 6 and spend any time there. 6 is the episode where we rescued the clones. So because of that, it's an earth-like planet. It's got water, it's got lots of vegetation. The odds of there not being some kind of life on there are very slim, so we're just going to lean into that. Whether that life is the creatures that made that plaque and are still alive, who knows? We'll find out. * * * I want to go back to Lane's death this season because it was rough. Was it always the plan for Garnet to fall for him, or did that come from the actors' natural chemistry? Jonathan Glassner: Both. We saw the chemistry last season, but they were so at odds that we couldn't really play it much. So this season, we did, knowing that it would make the death tragic when we got to it. So in that regard, yeah. Edited October 28 by tv echo 1 Link to comment
