Empire Spotlight: Joe Locke Is Ready To Enchant The MCU
By Olly Richards   September 5, 2024
https://www.empireonline.com/movies/features/spotlight-joe-locke-interview/

Quote

“I’ve always envisioned myself being in a Marvel, ever since I was a kid,” says Joe Locke. “Ever since” in this case is not reaching very far back into the past. Locke is still just 20 and he’s already achieved that childhood dream. In the upcoming Marvel TV series Agatha All Along, a WandaVision spin-off, Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha has been stripped of her witchy magic and is on a quest to restore it. Locke plays her fanboy assistant, simply known as ‘Teen’. “To be doing it, it’s very ‘pinch me’,” he tells Empire.
*  *  *
Locke speaks fondly of his Agatha co-stars, especially Patti LuPone, who sent him flowers on his first night of playing Sweeney Todd on Broadway in January. “She said, ‘Joe, be present, enjoy yourself, and just breathe. Fuck it. That’s it,’” he laughs. “If Patti LuPone says to do that, then okay.”

What to expect from Yellowstone, 9-1-1, The Penguin and 74 other fall shows

Agatha All Along (Sept. 18, Disney+)

It’s almost as if Agatha All Along, the sequel series to 2021’s WandaVision, was specifically structured to show off the many magical qualities of its central star, Kathryn Hahn. She's done comedies (Parks and Recreation), dramas (Tiny Beautiful Things), horror (The Visit), and even singing (Hahn's technically a chart-topping singer with the WandaVision song "Agatha All Along"). "I made a lot of jokes the last couple of weeks where I would be like, 'Well, this was my last acting job because I got to do everything in one part,'" the actress tells EW. It was indeed that charisma, uniqueness, and talent that Hahn possesses — and, yes, the immense fan response to the Agatha Harkness character — that made series creator Jac Shaeffer want to anchor a new show around the theatrical ages-old witch. "My focus in that early development was the WandaVision corner of the universe," Schaeffer says. "Every idea that I had was, X character does this and then Agatha shows up. Over time it became so abundantly clear that the show I was meant to do was Agatha, all along." —N.R.

WATCH: Agatha All Along (Disney+)
...
Equal parts Hocus Pocus, The Wizard of Oz, Blues Brothers, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Josie and the Pussycats, this WandaVision follow-up is very much its own, magically delicious thing, featuring divine performances by Kathryn Hahn, Patti LuPone and Joe Locke — and at least one musical performance that will haunt you. Anything for Agatha All Along? –Lena

Spoiler

When I asked each of the cast members to name their favorite episodes and offer two to three words about why, Ali Ahn (who plays Alice) singled out Episode 6, because… “bar mitzvah.”

I cannot speak to exactly when Teen’s identity will be revealed, but I do know that very soon, you will get a big clue about who he isn’t. (That is, if a certain someone is to be believed….)

This is not really about the show beyond Aubrey Plaza liking witches and telling a story about Patti LuPone, but it’s awesome.

Marvel’s Brad Winderbaum Talks Success of ‘Agatha All Along,’ Making Future Shows on ‘Reasonable Budget’
By Joe Otterson   Oct 3, 2024
https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/agatha-all-along-budget-marvel-brad-winderbaum-1236167398/

Quote

“I can tell you it’s our least expensive show, and I think that was by design,” Winderbaum said in an interview with Variety. “We are looking to make these shows for a responsible cost. Frankly, it gives us a little bit more freedom creatively when we can bring them in at a reasonable budget. Like [“Agatha All Along”], for example, the show has minimal CG, way less than we’ve ever done before. It’s mostly practical effects, and I think you can feel it in the show.”
*  *  *
Per Disney, the first episode of “Agatha” scored 9.3 million views in its first seven days of availability, with a view defined as total amount of time watched divided by runtime. Compare that to the “Star Wars” series “The Acolyte” on Disney+, which drew 11.1 million in its first five days but also had a reported budget of $180 million. And TV has always been a business where viewership is one factor for a show’s success, but always when weighed against cost. Winderbaum also claims the show has the best continuation rate of any Marvel show, but declined to provide further details.

Any new Agatha All Along teasers? –Jesse
Akin to how Ali Ahn (who plays Alice), in a previous Inside Line, singled out Episode 6 (and teased “bar mitzvah”), both Sasheer Zamata (Jen) and Joe Locke (Teen) said that Episode 7 is their favorite of the nine. Reasons why? “Patti Lupone,” raved Zamata, while Locke said, “playing with form.”

‘Agatha All Along’ Creator on Directing Patti LuPone’s Mind-Bending Episode, Revealing (Spoiler)’s True Identity and Who Is Really Dead

Quote

This episode, in other words, is A Lot. And yet Schaeffer orchestrates “Death’s Hand in Mind” to unfold with an emotional clarity that allows LuPone to shine in one of her best ever on-screen performances. Schaeffer talked with Variety about all of the mind-squeezing details that went into making the episode, as well as how they decided on everyone’s fairy tale looks, revealing Rio Vidal’s true identity, whether Lilia and the other witches are really dead, and what fans should know going into next week’s two-episode finale.

Quote

The other thing that was very complicated about this episode was the practical part. Those swords are real, and they’re on piano wire. We had to number them and know the order and decide where they went before any actors set foot on the set. So we had this sword map that was nuts, and Ishi was my sword angel, keeping all that in both our minds. And the actors — they were so lovely — they were willing to let me say, “We cannot explore dancing around the space. I need you here right now, otherwise a sword is going to hit you in the face.”
