anna0852 June 18, 2020 Share June 18, 2020 For those of you who read the books, how do you think the events of this year would impact the characters? Besides the pandemic there have also been major crackdowns in Hong Kong and China where a lot of the novels take place. Any thoughts? 1 Link to comment
Blergh June 20, 2020 Share June 20, 2020 Their home base of Singapore (thanks to their VERY strict enforcement of health rules), seems to have weathered the affliction better than most parts of Asia but since that city nation depends on trade from Asian markets to the outside world for its continuing survival, it's likely the Youngs would have taken a massive hit. Not to say that they'd be having to open a dumpling delivery service to survive but they wouldn't be able to travel so freely AND they would be somewhat hobbled in what was happening to their relatives spread out to other parts of Asia (e.g. the film producing nephew likely would have had virtually all his productions shut down). I imagine this would be quite the challenge for the author Mr. Kwan to address IF he felt up to the challenge! Link to comment

If you're Chinese in Singapore, you'd probably be okay (maybe not economically, but health-wise). If you're the help (usually people from abroad) who live in rooming houses? You're f-ing screwed. At least that's what media have been saying. Article on Kevin Kwan from the Atlantic (it isn't related to Covid, but rather, his new book). Link to comment
