  1. Production Weekly - whatever that is, exactly - is reporting that the 5th season is currently in Active Development.

And while that does not 1000% confirm the series has been saved/renewed, people are saying that this PW is rarely wrong nor falsifies the info they provide for shows.

  2. I found myself disappointed in Will in the first couple of episodes of S4, in that he just stood way back and let the 'cool kids' pick on & bully Jane/11.

I get he has a personal history with that exact type of thing from his middle school days back in Hawkins while just taking it from the bullies, as well as going through quite a bit in his own personal sphere - the most likely being gay SL - but even its just a weak wavering "please just leave her alone", just do something, man!

And I lump Mike in with that as well, when that whole incident - leading up to her smacking Angela in the face with a skate - both boys just stood there gawping and watched her get utterly humiliated.  Yes, Mike did get the DJ to finally turn off the music, but they should have been out there getting the group away from J/11 or her away from the crowd.  Watching the lack of action and protection was so frustrating.

Another thing;  I don't know if they will or not, but if they do plan on making it so that Will will end up having a strong connection to the Upside Down/Vecna thing back in Hawkins - after they all finally get back there - it will fall a bit flat to me.  Simply because that while I know that they are currently halfway across the country from Indiana and Hawkins, they've given no hint at all that Will's 'UD radar detector' ability/feelings has alerted him to what's going on back there.  Before Owens picked J./11 up and the soldiers attacked their house, its been played that he's had no idea in the slightest that Hawkins was still dealing with its supernatural curse crap.

  3. I guess the reason I am most intrigued by my theory of Will pining for Jane/11 instead of being gay is because I like the viewing experience a lot more when the shows throw curveballs after constant hints about one thing, instead turning out to be something else;  no matter the plot or storyline.  Them veering off the path of their hints is not something I'm willing to bet on, but I prefer non-linear paths in things I watch/read.   jmpov & ymmv

Also, going off just memory, but I am remembering Will always referring to her as either 'El' or Jane so far this season - through ep.3 - but much more often than not, Mike calls her 'Eleven'.  I feel like there's a big clue about things in the difference there, but I can't figure out exactly what.  (like whether Mike actually is [still?] in love with her, or not, for instance)

I’m starting to wonder if social media is right and Will does have deeper feelings for Mike.

Maybe. If Will was interested in girls, I think he would have shown some sign of it. In the first episode of the season, he didn't seem pleased a girl was flirting with him. I thought it just meant he wasn't interested in her specifically, but it's possible he's not interested in girls at all.

    {Disclaimer:  Have only watched the season (& series) to this episode [so far!], so I have plenty of time to be proven very wrong....}

I'm going mostly the other way with this, about the hints that Will is gay (for Mike, at the least).

My current working theory is that the complete and total obviousness of the 'clues' that paint Will as a batter for the same team are way too blatant and thus are red herrings, and are possibly actually clues about something else.

I think its possible that Will has fallen for Jane/Eleven but - in his mind - can't do anything about it because not only does the rest of his family consider her his sister now but she and his (former?) best friend are together (somewhat, from a long distance).  If one were to see it a certain way, there's a clue right in the first episode, during that monologue of Jane/11 'reading' the letter she's written to Mike.  She says something along the lines of "Will is acting weird, I think he likes a girl".

Its probably a stupid theory and me reading into things that aren't there, but I just feel like the heavy-handedness of the "Will is gay!" hints are too obvious for it to be either just that or that at all.  Seems way too easy, with hints that a blind & deaf person could read without any trouble.

As for all the awkwardness that Will is displaying around Mike, I believe is more about the remnants of the argument they had during the middle of S3 and as Will stated, Mike hadn't called or wrote but a couple times then turned down a friendly hug attempt when arrived in Cali as well as pretty much ignored Will totally in favor of Jane/11 the whole time he's been there.

Its only for about 20 hours, but I'm standing on this hill until I watch the rest of S4, V1.

‘Magnum P.I.’ May Be Rescued By NBC & USA Network Following CBS Cancellation

No one is commenting, but I hear talks are underway for NBC and/or USA Network to potentially carry the series starring Jay Hernandez.

An arrangement still is being figured out, but I hear one scenario is for new episodes to air on NBC while USA would run previous seasons of the action drama, a reboot of the 1980s series that starred Tom Selleck.

I still refuse to get any hopes up, but there does seem to be some tiny wafts of smoke to all this 'efforts to save the show' "fire" we've heard news about, starting since shortly after the cancellation was announced.

CBS (& NBCU) can go f*ck right off, and take their reality shit with them.

My problem is when a show legit shouldn't have been canceled based on the metrics, ya know? Like, I've obviously followed plenty of shows where every season was basically a blessing and I was thrilled for whatever we got. So when they get canceled, you get it. You might love the show, but you get that it is a super niche show and you can't expect it to be a hit. But then you have a show that IS popular and that normally WOULD be an easy renewal and when THOSE shows are canceled, it's a much bigger shock. Magnum PI would seriously be one of the most popular shows on a few different networks and it's canceled because CBS had a time slot crunch and therefore tried to cheap out on the licensing fee accordingly? That's so harsh.

Being co-owned, there were two places to shift it, in terms of streaming, be it Paramount+ or Peacock.  But instead, just outright cancelled it.

A procedural like Criminal Minds survived well past its shelf life, imo, (15 seasons!) and is now being brought back - via streaming - 1.5 to 2 years after cancellation.  But you're telling me that neither CBS or NBCU can't save a show - even if only via a streaming platform - that had the ratings and a fanbase worthy of saving??

The decisions made by these networks is nonsensically frustrating.

Yeah, my guess is that it was simply a matter of Universal having five shows and the worst performing of the five (Magnum) was the one where they couldn't come to an agreement on a deal.

It still sucks, since the other four shows actually worked out MULTI-SEASON renewals for all four, so to go from MULTIPLE SEASON renewals for four shows to not even be able to get a single season for the fifth was tough, when the fifth was still performing well, as well.

I think it's probably a case where CBS was renewing so many shows that it just flat out didn't have much room left on the schedule and it had a few new procedurals that it thought could do well and let's face it, procedurals like the FBI shows are what sells best nowadays, so while Magnum was doing well, it wasn't doing AS well as the procedurals like the FBIs and CBS wanted to add even more of those types of shows.

I understand what you're saying, and the numbers don't lie, re: the law enforcement and medical procedurals....

But they're just not my cup of tea.  They're just so bland and formulaic, episode after episode.  I might check out one here and there, just because of either things I've heard about it sound a bit intriguing, or because of actors I know & like being in them.  But even then, I usually lose interest quick.

Yeah, it makes so little sense, especially since CBS was able to work out a deal with Universal TV for FOUR OTHER SHOWS!

These kinds of situations always leave me wondering if there's something else BTS that we the general public don't know about.

Coughing up a licensing fee seems so easy to do for these big networks, but that's the reason for cancellation of a show that wasn't struggling??  I think that either the reason given isn't the real one, or somebody (on either side) wanted to cancel it no matter what and any reason - no matter how insignificant or silly - would work to do it.

It'd be one thing if it wasn't a popular show or if the cast wanted out, but nope, the show was popular, the cast wanted to keep going, the studio wanted to keep going, the NETWORK wanted to keep going and it still ended up getting canceled because they couldn't come to terms on the licensing fee. It's just so gross.

What's really gross about it is, it was co-owned, so they couldn't split the licensing fee bill??

This is part of the reason I wait and watch/binge shows 'after the fact'.  Might end in a spot I don't like, but at least I know it is the end before going in and not getting disappointed by cancellation news at the time.

Still saddened by the announcement but at least I can imagine happy endings from the cliffhangers-Rick has a family, TC and Cade are a family, Gordon will became a partner in Magnum and Higgins private investigators, etc.

Considering how just about everything wrapped up so 'neatly' in that finale, I think the PTB either knew or had a very good indication that this could be it.

I truly believe there would not have been a Miggy kiss at the end of the finale if they knew a S5 was on deck.

The writers & producers loved dragging that whole WT/WT scenario out ad nauseam.  I think there would have been dialogue that would have seen both providing hard-to-miss hints that they had feelings for the other, but not the outright sharing with each other about those feelings and the kiss we ended up with.

  12. Slightest of slight chance (theoretically) that the problem is solved & decision is reversed and they shift it to Paramount+, or other streaming service, but won't be holding my breath for that outcome.

Thing I liked most about Magnum - aside from the Hawaiian scenery - was despite it being a procedural show, it wasn't the least bit rigid about said procedure(s).  Instead of needing to wait for a warrant, Magnum just lock-picked his way into locations, or they did things as needed without following orders & waiting for backup, etc, among many instances.

About all there is for primetime programming on CBS or NBC now, procedurals with rigid procedures - be it cop shows, FBI shows, or medical shows - with an episodic overlay of "moral(s) of the day/week/month" messaging.  Seen one, seen 'em all.

TBH, I feel relief that this show is cancelled. Poor Miggy shippers, what they got was an awkward, emotionless kiss. 🤣🤣🤣

I have read some comments online - there were gossips among crews about the leads wanting to leave. Could this be the real reason behind the cancellation?

It could be the real reason, but I've also read that it had more to do with the series' ownership being split between CBS & NBC Universal, something along the lines of not agreeing about the payment(s) of licensing fees, etc.

  14. Not really surprised by the cancellation news, seeing as its night-sharing sibling Blue Bloods was renewed a couple weeks back and news about Magnum was mum until now.

Miggy shippers should feel a bit blessed, they got more than I wanted from the MacGyver reboot before its axe fell.  They got an actual on-screen kiss - as bad as it was - and the 'likely' beginning of a romantic relationship.  MacGyver was cancelled right before my OTP of that show (Mac/Riley) was going to happen in its would-have-been very next season.

  15. .... so that explains the deafening 'SQUEE!!' sound I heard at about the time the episode was ending last night.  It was all the shippers' dreams come true.

Was that not the most weird awkward kiss you've ever seen, or what?  It was like they - or at least one of them - was going for the whole 'tongue down throat' kinda liplock action, only no tongues actually involved at any time.  Cringey.

@Maverick, they better not do that - the immediate 'better off as friends' angst after getting together - or I might just quit watching, even with as much fun as it is to snark the hell out of this show.  Because we all know that if they pull what you outlined above, its just gonna restart the whole WT/WT (again) rollercoaster ride.  And once is enough, TYVM.

Gordy will already be back on the job to start S5, or will spend the first few episodes as the 'third wheel' in the PI biz before being reinstated at HPD.

There was no way they were gonna have Suzy either die or be in a coma, etc, with the big dual 'feelings reveal' to end the episode/season coming right afterwards, so that whole buildup was dumb and unnecessary.  All it accomplished was to make sure all the supporting cast - aside from Cade (who's in TN) - got a little screen time to end the season.  Lame-o.

JH told us he hoped that Miggy wouldn't happen - at least not this season - even slightly implying it wouldn't happen.  So much for that.  I bring it up because JH has said in very recent interviews that he's confident that the series will be renewed, despite it being all quiet so far on that front from CBS (so far).   Should one buy in to his confidence of a S5, or is he talking out his rear on that like he was about the Miggy stuff?

ETA:  The "Lia coming from the direction of the bedroom, but only because she was too drunk to drive home" stall to Higgy's confessing at the beginning of the episode.  POINTLESS.  We all knew the whole feelings confession wouldn't happen until right before 'fade to black' anyways, so why create fake drama just cuz??  Combine that with the start of the previous episode - "let's hang out (so I can tell you how I feel)" / "sorry, can't, gotta do a picnic date with what's-their-face"- and its crap like that, that sours me on the whole WT/WT merry-go-round we have to endure to reach a show's canon OTP.  Tedious and pointless, all of it.

    Season finale‼️

"Lots of emo and a couple of cliffhangers".

Welp, we know what one - or knowing these writers and showrunners, both - of those cliffhangers will be.  Anyone who expects to see the ultimate actualization of the most obvious aspect of the show currently, in this finale, is just trying to fool themselves.

And now that we know the canonization of Miggy will be officially put off until next season - maybe, who knows with these ptb, could be delayed for another season(s) - I will be fairly surprised if the series is renewed.  All this agonizingly blatant and boring setup for it, and the series will end up being cancelled before they actually start the relationship or even kiss.

In the promo for the finale, it looks like Magnum and Higgins are talking in front of a crappy green screen a CW soap opera would use if the characters were supposed to be in Hawaii.

That green screen shot is so crappy, I bet its a dream - or some other non-reality - sequence.  The backdrop is that appallingly apparent, and bad.

I'm watching DCI Banks just now and Annie drives me up the wall.

Maybe I absolutely need to read the books first, but after watching the first 90 minutes (Aftermath, pilot episodes), I feel like I have whiplash - at least on the Banks/Cabbot front.

I knew from a brief summary that Banks & Cabbot would be a thing, but not that fast!   Maybe I am just too used to American TV series, and their insistent need to drag the WT/WT on and on and on and on between the lead characters, but this was crazy quick.

All in the opening ~45 minutes, the two went from a seemingly difficult first meeting, unhappy working relationship at the beginning, then she almost runs him down in the parking garage, they go for drinks, end up at his house and would have banged if not for the phone & case news interrupting.

Felt like I was watching abbreviated opening episode, the 'relationship' moved that fast.

Seemed weird and disjointed, but maybe just me.    *shrugs*

  19. After watching 4.19, they better make Miggy canon at the end of the episode on Friday night.  Renewed or not, you can't come this far and keep delaying it.

I can just imagine the hardcore shippers' furious anguish if the finale ends on the cliffhanger such as one of the two admitting their feelings for the other and the recipient is in the process of answering as the screen goes black.

..... And then for what would be the ultimate kick in the nuts (for the shippers), a few days/weeks afterwards, we would learn of the news that the series got the axe from CBS.

  20. In agreement above about Higgins' awesomeness.

I am all about her being tough, skilled and resourceful.   Wouldn't be of much help to the PI partnership if she were in constant need of protecting and/or rescuing, but they could have handled it better.  You don't need to 'nerf' the main character to prop up the main supporting character, but that's what they did.

Wondering how Magnum finished any cases or got any 'street cred' built up on his own, prior to the start of the series.  Ever since it started, Higgins has done the vast majority of the heavy lifting when in it comes to getting anything done, especially technologically.

And considering all the "you owe us (monetarily)" griping that the Ohana does about him, Magnum is always portrayed as a lazy selfish mooch.  What a wonderful portrayal you provide of him, writers. [/sarcasm]
