I agreed with Joy today, the same sentiment behind the treatment of women in places like Iran is being aimed at women here, just in a different stage.

Yes, She wasn't saying they were the same thing but that we are quickly speeding toward the same here. I have seen stories lately of women being taken off planes because of modesty issues. It is coming if something doesn't change.

I think Ana was trying to get the table to focus more on the plight of the Iranian women rather than center the issues of American women.

  2. Ana and Sarah are MVPs today! I especially appreciate Ana pushing back on Joy equating the situations of Iranian and American women.

Though, I see the point that Joy was making. Women aren't being killed in the US for these kinds of reasons. Yet. Religion is already being used to curtail women's choices. Draconian anti-abortion laws are putting women's lives at stake.

Loved Sunny's Christine Amanpour story. She seemed less aggressive towards Alyssa today. I'm not bothered by Sunny's current curly golden wig look. She's in her Beyonce phase. 😉

Based on the comments against Sunny on here, Black women get no grace for any mistake real or perceived so Sunny better be careful she knows we are often judged harsher and we are not protected.  Sunny should dial back her attitude against Alyssa. I am not a fan of Alyssa but I know how society views Black women and Sunny should know this..

You are right, we are judged harsher and less protected. I see this across the forums where black women on shows of all kinds are concerned. I think maybe Sunny knows, but just has no more f*cks left to give.

So I haven't watched today's show yet but in the Nikki Haley name discussion, is it ever brought up that Nikki is her middle name?  Or are they just pretending that she pulled it out of thin air?  Also, it's a Punjabi name, so Sunny can suck it.

I'll be honest, I had to go look up Nikki's name, and I had no idea that Nikki was of Punjabi origin. I thought it was a common enough American name, a shortened version of Nicole, or the like, and I figured that she'd taken it in an attempt at assimilation and to avoid racism. Which, understandable. Just like Sunny, I assume. Though, I figured that Sunny was a nickname for Asunción, and I assumed that Nikki had taken on her name. I stand corrected.

To me, one main difference is that Sunny is obviously a Black woman, while Nikki might could pass as a white woman.

I have seen so many politicians with ethnic backgrounds, particularly on the conservative side, scrub all aspects of their culture and take on Americanized names - Ted Cruz, Bobby Jindal, et al, in a bid for acceptance and to advance politically.

I'm no Alyssa fan, but Sunny has been very ugly towards her. Alyssa's totally trying to rehab her image here...I'll be honest, I'm torn. I totally get that Sunny loathes her for who she is and what she was a part of...and I get wanting to rub it in her face...HOWEVER...it makes Sunny look so very petty. And I get it. I GET it. Progressives and liberals get tired of always having to take the high road, of having to rise above. Sometimes you just wanna sling mud. But, it looks bad every time. It only get's you filthy. And, for Sunny, as a Black woman, it looks like an angry Black woman picking on a delicate white woman who's just trying to be nice. I hate the optics. And I hate the position that Sunny is in. After years of dealing with Meghan, she's tired. And I kinda even feel a little bad for Alyssa, who's trying to walk that line of repping the conservative viewpoint and trying to fit in.

I'm appreciating how Sarah is stepping up. She's asserting herself more, asking more pointed questions, and getting in some clever quip. I like it.

Meghan Markle's division of the royal bros is a permanent one, IMHO. Her self-centeredness and selfishness caused this and besides, Kate can't stand her and her word stands for a lot more than Markle's so you two can just get yourselves back to America and don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Why would Kate's word stand for more than Meghan's?

  6. I think about Alyssa's weird argument that "We all started as equals here," referring to why Presidents don't boss servants around, like King Charles was doing in the video.

I mean...for one, we did not ALL start as equals here. And Presidents, I imagine, can be pretty imperious, just like any other powerful person.

I do not know if the newest cohost has her own topic listing yet so I will post here. My eyes are drawn to how short her skirts are when seated. If the skirt slides up much more, we will see everything. I remember EH wore short skirts too but were the skirts of EH as revealing as Alyssa's?  Just my 2 cents worth.

I had to laugh, cuz mr. rollacoaster noticed how short her dress was as well!

In my head I was absolutely certain there were ten episodes.  And now this season is over and I'm not ready for it!

I started watching this because it seemed like something that would work for my mom and I to watch together.  Sweet, charming, a few hokey nods to the fact that the world has changed in the decades since the movie, but... otherwise... unremarkable.  And for the first few episodes it was just that.  Fine.  Just fine.

And then around episode 6 they started letting all those ancillary characters really do their thing.  And they were so.  damn.  good.  And now I want to go back and watch it again because I very, very strongly suspect they were all being so damn good the whole time, just without any lines to chew on.  My mom and I had a big fight about Jess, who I had seen as being very quietly an intense team player the whole time but who she had seen as a grumpy storm cloud.  I want to go back and see what she was showing.  I want to get to appreciate what she was doing with basically no lines.  Ditto Maybelle.  Ditto Bev.  Ditto Max's dad, whose sense of humor makes me giggle.

I was trying to explain to my mom, who hasn't seen the movie, how beautifully some of the references work.  The closest I could get was the idea that armies marching over bridges have to break their march so they won't accidentally hit the resonance frequency of the bridge and have the whole thing ripple itself into... well, in that example into a busted bridge and a sorry army.  But the references back really felt like more than just the sum of their parts.  Maybelle's little speech - duh, yes she's a mom this is her one chance to get away - made me realize that oh right, she was the analog to the movie mom, and there it was, resonating in the key of "I'm not an easy blonde, I've got a lot of responsibilities but I found a way to live for myself for just once!" And the ending - they had to lose, that's the story - but, ahh... I don't have the words.  It resonated bigger than just a sense of "oh, that's a neat thing they did there."

And I'm still holding to my heart that beautiful little line from Bev to Jess.  The amount that communicated about generations of queer women finding a little sliver of the world here and a little sliver of the world there.  The homosocial world of the first world war, the homosocial world of the second world war.  Little spaces stolen away.

Lots of other folks have said many of my other thoughts - especially the relief that they didn't just rewrite history and have Max make it onto the Peaches.  Instead, they figured out where the empty spaces in history are - the stories that are so unusual that they only worked for a moment or only on the edges.  A coupla chicks on a Black barnstorming team that knows very well the importance of putting on a fun show to keep the bread coming in?  Yeah, that's absolutely possible and so, *so* much more interesting.  Fingers crossed for another season!

ALL OF THIS! So beautifully expressed! I might just go back and watch again myself.

Fairly sure that The Summer Isles aren't a part of Westeros. Not sure if they're closer to Essos or Southros. I could be wrong though, my Planetos geography is rusty.

I had to look it up, they are located southeast of Westeros.

My point is that the Summer Isles are a known part of that world. There ARE dark-skinned people in the Game of Thrones universe, just like there were non-white people in Medieval Europe.

It's a continent with basically only white people. That's the point. Not every place in history and fiction is modern day USA.

Like I said, if you must have diversity, there are ways you could get it into this show, that isn't completely lazy and nonsensical.

Medieval Europe was actually more diverse than people think. Look at a map. Parts were not that far from Northern Africa and the Middle East.

I think you mentioned that the people of Dorne were the brownest that people get in Westeros?

Don't forget the Summer Isles people, whose skin tones come in "shades of nut brown, teak, ebony and polished black. Their hair and eyes are black."

  11. Chloe and Halle Bailey are sisters who are singers and actresses. They are 24 and 22. Halle is going to be Ariel in the live action The Little Mermaid.

Between them and the young man that guest judged the group challenge, I think they have the most to offer in terms of how best to navigate social media. That Heidi was so shocked that they liked Yannick's video showed just how out of touch she is with technology, social media, and probably fashion as well.

I dont think the three main judges really understand what's catchy on social media. I think Chloe and Halle offered useful and down to earth feedback in that regard that the designers could use.

At the beginning of the episode, Yannick reminded me of this quote by Erykah Badu:

"I'm an artist, and I'm sensitive about my shit."

  12. I agree with the judges that the looks were pretty drab and uninspired. Depending on the festival, looks can be pretty wild. Having said that, how the judging was conducted was abusive and unnecessary.

During Jeremy's tantrum, Tim looked so disturbed, like he wanted to step in on behalf of the designers. I hated how beaten down and shamed they looked, especially Jeanette. They looked like chastened children.

And, like several have mentioned, they are EXHAUSTED from the last assignment!

The assignment was way too broad and lacked clarity. I think they should have had them design for a just a single festival. That would have helped the designers to better hone in on more perhaps more interesting and cohesive ideas.

Or, the designers should have chosen a specific festival and character to design for. I don't think the reference images they were shown were very inspiring. I mean, in the one for Coachella, one of the biggest pics was of a young woman in a beige shift and a sun hat? 🤔🙄

"We abuse you cuz we LOOOOOVE you! Can't you understand that?"

The whiplash from castigation to cooing encouragement was sickening. And, from the looks of the designers, triggering.

I don't recall any mention of midwives or other types of medical professionals other than Maesters in Westeros, which is unfortunate, as Maesters in general don't seem to be very competent. Do they do much more than apply leeches or dose patients with milk of the poppy? I feel like if you're grievously injured or fall ill in the GOT world, you're pretty much doomed.

Having a skilled midwife present could have saved the queen's life. That was true even in our world in the Ye Olden Times. You were much more likely to die under the "ministrations" of the learned doctors than under the care of of a knowledgeable midwife or village wisewoman.

  14. As soon as I realized what Greta and Carson were gonna do for Jo, I dissolved into tears. SO MUCH FUCKING CRYING IN BASEBALL. 😥😢😭😫

I know Max felt Toni was a bit of a villain, but she was truly afraid for her daughter and what she will face in the world. She truly did SEE Max, and it was a powerful gesture to ensure she would have status and security in the community by passing on the beauty parlor to her. I'm glad that Toni will be supporting and mothering Clance through her pregnancy.

I realized that, for all her brashness and bluster, Max really is very young and has lived a relatively sheltered life. I'm glad she has Uncle Bertie to encourage her to soar, and I hope she comes to appreciate the strong foundation her mother gave her.

The reveal that Beverly was part of the LGBTQ family and had been looking out for Jess (and truly, all the women) was beautiful.

I did like how anachronistic music was used for emphasis, though I never did quite get used to the contemporary dialog. It did tickle me when Max and Clance sauntered into the factory in shades, waving The Defender around and greeting everyone with a rousing "Grand rising!" That HAD to be ad-libbed!

I was shocked at just how young Esti was! She really was just a baby. I understand what Lupe's issue was, but I do wish she had been kinder to her. I'm glad that Esti had a friend in Jess, and that they learned a bit of each other'slanguage. Jess was a hoot, and being a super intense person, I think she appreciated Esti's passionate nature.

This is probably a minority opinion, but I enjoyed Carson's character arc. I feel that she had grown into a position of strength by the end, and she showed tremendous discernment by not running off to New York with Greta. I never did trust or warm up to Greta, she was just too mercurial.

Anyhow, this was fun and well done! And, as always, enjoyed reading everyone's snarky and insightful commentary!

I do give King Viserys respect for holding his wife’s hand and staying with her rather than leaving the room so he didn’t have to face it. Given the position of the fetus and how her labor is progressing she wasn’t going to make it no matter what, I understand why they wanted to try to save the fetus.

    1 hour ago, aghst said:

But Inside the Episode, the show runners said that Viserys is made to understand that the wife is dying either way, whether or not they do the C-section.  It's a question of whether the baby could be saved.

They also said they intercut it with the jousting battle, in which a lot of knights with pent-up aggression, because there haven't been any wars for them to fight in, because Emma said birthing heirs is her battlefield -- she also said it would be her last pregnancy, which proved unfortunately prophetic.

I understand that a choice had to be made, but any tenderness or regard from the attendants for her as a queen or even a human vanished once it was. I do appreciate that King Viserys held her hand to the end.

I also understand that kings be desperate for male heirs. I totally believe that King Henry VIII would have totally been fine with sacrificing any one of his wives for a healthy male heir, and definitely wouldn't have been in the room for it.

Part of me snarks: So, if he'd just made his daughter the heir earlier, could that have spared the queen this pregnancy and thus her life? That young lady has a lot of targets on her back. She has a steely quality that will no doubt benefit her going forward.

Lord, I am going on about Queen Aemma like she was my bestie, and not a show character I was just introduced to and who didn't even have that much screen time.

Princess Rhaenys Targaryen must be so sick of that fucking title.

  16. I feel that Catherine Zeta-Jones somehow misses the mark as Morticia. My daughter referred to her as a MILF doing a Morticia cosplay. She just doesn't feel right. It will always be Carolyn Jones and Angelica Huston for me. Angelica Huston especially favored regal angularity of the drawings, and Carolyn was so gorgeous and had such vibrant personality.

I do like the new Gomez. He matches the original drawings very well. I'm not feeling the wig on Luis, though I get what they are trying for.

I am much more interested in Max's story than Carson's.  I'm anxious for the plot to move more quickly to the inevitable scene when Max shows how good she is and is asked to join the team.

I'm very much looking forward to that intersection! Max has such a powerful presence, and the actress does an excellent job of balancing Max's intense charisma with having to play small in the presence of white people. I love that we get to see her interactions with her family and community.

  18. I'm really enjoying this show so far. I'm loving the women's athleticism and passion for the game. It's great seeing Carson gain confidence and start asserting herself. Greta is coming off very manipulative to me. I don't like how she plays with Carson.

When Max came in from working at the factory overnight and flopped down exhausted on the bed, it gave me Tiana vibes.

Poor Guy and that egg, lol! Max's dad was wrong for that. But also: 😆

Carson's roommate gives off such a new age vibe, with talk of energy and transmission and initiation.

Dove is kind of a dick.
