  1. Anyone else think Mrs. G. might have been too soft on the Four? I mean, not only did she get talked into giving them 'internal punishments' in lieu of squealing to them to the principal for getting drunk and smuggling booze into the dorm but one needs to consider that they ALREADY were on probation for having snuck into a bar to attempt to guzzle booze and flirt with strange men (AND had already gotten the school's van TOTALED after they borrowed it without permission to get to said bar. .and Blair stupidly parked it on the wrong way of a one-way alley).  Yeah and both sets of transgressions were terminal offenses for their Eastland education but, in spite of saying they'd learned their lessons, they obviously hadn't and would keep getting into more and  trouble before Tootie FINALLY was able to graduate and move into wherever Mrs. G. decamped! Of course, had they been expelled, that would have meant having to revamp the show/find replacements but it seemed Mrs. G. wanted little as possible to do with the other Eastland student body- especially that invisible (and unmentioned)  Kimberly Drummond who was supposed to be still living there  as per the other show  for years after Mrs. G spun off!

Oh, my bad- they're several seasons apart.

  3. First World Peeve Alert: I hate when I lose clothing but especially when I lose something that's cool and a pragmatic item!  I'm so mad at myself for having lost my fave scarf that not only wrapped around the neck several times but was warm and thick so I could keep the whole neck and upper chest area toasty warm even in the most freezing temps!  All I know is that I brought it to work, then sometime between the time I changed from street clothes to work clothes then back, it was gone. I'm not even sure about that because the first time I noticed it was missing was when I was about to walk out the building and I didn't feel that usual toasty embrace- and all my efforts to retrace my steps back to my locker and change are to spot it were for naught! Yep, and right when my neck of the woods is having a long spell of subfreezing temps!ARRGHH!!

Yeah, I'm going to try to buy a replacement ASAP [and hope that the stores aren't sold out] but it makes me so mad at myself! PHOOOEY!!!!!

  4. It has been reported in legit media outlets that the coroner has ruled Sinead O'Connor's July, 2023 cause of death as 'natural causes'  but with no other information to be forthcoming.

I suppose that might be more comforting to her loved ones than accidental death, suicide or murder but it's odd that they refuse to say what the 'natural cause' WAS.

At least some questions have been cleared up even if others are left unanswered.

  5. IMO, no Northern Exposure discussion is complete without mentioning the straight-woman/stable one Ruth-Anne (Peg Phillips) who [usually] was the voice of reason though even she had her moments- and lets not forget that she was rather brave to make the decision to move to Cicely entirely on her own as a middle aged woman  after her husband's death just to run the general store (which rivaled Last of the Summer Wine's Auntie Wainwrights in terms of having quirky merchandise). Oh, and she virtually raised the parentless aspiring teen filmmaker Ed Chigliak (Darren E. Burrows)  who worked as her assistant- and, even more important, encouraged the pursuit of his ambition rather than dismissing them as mere pipe dreams [despite the many odds he'd have to deal with].  Even in its last legs, when the show totally flew off into the flake field and, otherwise, got dominated by annoying characters, Ruth-Anne remained a character one looked forward to visiting and wished one could visit more than once a week!

There are definitely some fun and interesting areas of Reddit. I mostly just read and upvote, though, and avoid arguments like the plague.

Yes, a relative. He doesn't have an ounce of interest in any other human being and just wants to talk about himself, his opinions, his observations. It's a mix of loneliness and mental illness and I feel for him, but don't have the coping skills to deal with him very often. Your mom is a saint!

Thanks! I may be a bit biased but I agree!

BTW, one of Mama's earliest memories was  when she was roughly two and  saw her paternal grandmother doing some sewing - every so often breaking off a small strand of thread from the spool then licking the tip to aid  threading the needle. Anyway, Mama decided she wanted to help make things easier for her relative  by making sure she'd never have to lick again- so Mama put the entire spool of thread in her mouth!  Yes, even back then Mama sought to help others as much as possible but her grandmother just thought she was being a destructive & naughty toddler and scolded Mama - and her daughter-in-law (Mama's mother) for what happened!

Thankfully, it wound up becoming a funny family story (though I'm not sure Mama's grandmother ever saw the humor in it) so I thought I'd bring it up here!

I always thought Carol deliberately got pregnant. She and Susan planned to use Ross as a sperm donor and quite stupidly and cruelly counted on him not wanting to be a father which of course backfired.

I think that if the show aired today, this is one of the storylines that would hit completely different. And would need to be treated very differently.

Possibly but I can't help but think that between Ross's seeming to forget about  Ben in just a few years, etc. it wound up backfiring on all four of them but the audience wasn't supposed to think of that!

I also think it's possible that Carol would have eventually seen Susan as somewhat toxic and controlling.

  8. Miss Johns had an interesting life (as per wiki)! She had been born in (of all places) Pretoria, South Africa while her British theatrical parents were touring there. Sadly, her only child, British actor Gareth Forwood  (by her 1st of 4 spouses) died of a heart attack in 2007 at age 62 but she has a surviving grandson and three great-grandchildren!

Yes, that's one sad part of getting way up in years when one outlives most if not all of one's loved ones.

Regardless, she left an unforgettable impression! RIP, Miss Johns!

Charles-Only Cash on a barrel , take in some orphans, flaunt manly chest some more

Laura-do things that Mary would get in trouble for but not Laura

    Harriet- Prove Charles is worthless

Nels- Not get busted speaking negative things about Harriet in front of her

It seemed Nels only rarely got busted in front of Harriet- which makes me think she opted to only hear what she wanted. . .

  10. Thanks for the suggestions about Mrs. D. FWIW, she did attempt to ZOOM for a time during their height of the affliction but it seems she's gotten more skittish re this new technology in the last few years. ..and none of the other participants (besides, perhaps Mama) truly want her back. .

  11. Happy New Year, Everybody!

Now that I think of it, this was one holiday ML made no attempt to acknowledge on the show! Could it have been that ML didn't want to pin the show down to any specific year/s or would he have been hardpressed to have had a 19th century New Year's celebration depicted if Charles stayed stone cold sober (despite ML's actual habits)?

Then again, I don't recall any Valentine's Day  episodes. ..

  12. Thankful, I was in the cozy home celebrating with Mama  (thankful that she's made it to 2024 !)instead of downtown with a packed crowd- and dreading making a beeline to a remote parking place before getting into a notorious traffic deadlock in the wee hours!

As long as I'm here there, I'll chew the fat about a situation Mama's gotten into with someone I'll term Mrs. D.

Long-short is that Mrs. D. used to live in the same neighborhood and was a bit of a busybody was also an overwhelming chatterbox re inane stuff. On the one hand, Mrs. D. has never been malicious or toxic by any stretch of the imagination but she's never been someone I've ever wanted to be more than civil when our paths happened to cross but otherwise I've been relieved when I could avoid her. Anyway, since she's roughly Mama's age, time's not spared her and she's moved into an assisted living facility and been widowed in recent years. All during her marriage, her husband had somewhat indulged her chatterbox deal but in her newer residence, the other residents thusfar have  evidently all individually decided that life's too short and they haven't wanted what little time remaining having to be taken up by her endless prattle. So, she recently sent a small Christmas present to Mama which prompted Mama to do the polite thing and call her to thank her. Guess what happened? Yep, Mrs. D. spent the next X number of hours [yes, HOURS] gabbing nonstop while Mama braced herself for it since Mama feels sorry for her even though Mama as well as Mrs. D's own family have pleaded with her to at least give the other residents the chance to get to converse two ways with her instead of having her steamroll them first thing which inevitably gets them to avoid her but Mrs. D. either won't/ can't change her ways!

I've tried to tell Mama to consider just claiming to need to attend to something then ending the convos after maybe five or ten minutes but Mama thinks it's better to let herself be pinned down by this gabber until Mrs. D. finally exhausts herself from blah-blah-blahing than to attempt to cut short these sessions.

No, I'm not truly seeking any solutions since Mama's far more patient and considerate than I am  but I'm wondering if anyone else has this issue with relatives and their acquaintances.

  13. Happy New Year 2024, Everyone! It's  a LEAP Year so we may see a few folks  on February 29th celebrating their birthdays who look about four times older than one would expect!

Well, let's make the year as good as we can and  each try to make our respective corners of the world a little better- regardless of things happening beyond our control!

It may have been an accident? Funbling around in purse for something to throw, picked the wrong thing.

Even if that HAD been the case, why would anyone throw ANYthing  at a concert other than perhaps confetti that a hypothetical performer would have previously expressly requested?!

And it doesn't sound as though the 'thrower' attempted to pretend that throwing her late mother's bagged ashes had been an accident when called on it!

I don't know who I more sorry for here: Pink, her daughter Willow Hart [who was also performing], the other concertgoers, her security team or. . .the thrower's deceased mother who I seriously doubt had expressed that as her last wish!

I hope Pink/ her security team, etc. saw to it that the 'thrower' got some therapy after that incident!

  15. As per news services Kathy Griffin has filed for divorce from Randy Biggs, days before   their 4th weddinganniversary.  As surprised as I was that the marriage had happened, I'm sorry that it didn't work out and hope each can find their respective individual peaces.

I wonder if Lily Tomlin who conducted their matrimonial service will have anything to say on the subject (and has she officiated any other couples' weddings?).

That was shit writing even for Lucas. They really did Padme dirty.

Oh, I totally agree - and he  gave Padme one of the most pathetic endings in the whole saga with her not even telling her newborns that she loved them or bidding them farewell [never mind that she didn't look even a trimester pregnant with a singleton before the birth].

Alas, though, any character's deeds or actions depicted are the character's themselves- regardless of how rottenly their authors had sabotaged them.

  17. In addition to making no attempt to free Shmi even after returning to Naboo with her huge incomes from queenship and the Senate [and never even claimed to have tried but failed to do so (e.g. precious riches sent from Naboo for that purpose had been robbed by Tatooine bandits)]and essentially concocting excuses for Anakin after he fessed to her butchering even the innocents among the Tuskens [not just the marauding adult murderous kidnappers of Shmi], IMO what really sealed Padme's idiocy and having the judgment of pea in a henhouse had to be Padme's reaction to Anakin's slaughtering the Jedi youths and babies who'd sought his protection [ as opposed to adult combatants]: she wanted him to run away with her back to Naboo to raise their child together.

So she thought that someone she knew had  committed mass murders of  children and even babies not only deserved zero punishments or consequences whatsoever for having done the above, but  it seemed she thought that they instantly could just plunge into parenthood and he'd be an ideal co-parent to their offspring on her planet (with zero chance of any of his victims' loved ones, etc. seeking him out). Yeah, it seemed she embodied the old 'I don't care how he atrocious  he has been  to other folks because he thinks I'm SPECIAL and would never even  think to so much as raise a hand to me or our own family' solipsistic  idiocy! REALLY?

Even his reaction to her plea seemed, at best, that he was annoyed by that suggested option like he'd just felt having stepped on a slug rather than wanting to lovingly embrace her and become the Galactic  Daddy Walton- all of this BEFORE he realized that Obi Wan was with her! NOT that she deserved any violence on his part whatsoever but  look how burying her head in the sand to be lovey dovey and wanting to  play house worked out for her!

All the above are among the reasons I could only see the first three eps once and couldn't bother attempting to watch the Abrams Add Ons -no matter how often all the above got replayed on TV.

Since the younger Mr. Allman doesn't appear to have any career or even to be earning his own living and appears to have had legit issues which would require fiscal if not physical supervision, at this point, I'm giving his mother Cher the benefit of the doubt re pursuing this legal conservatorship of him.  I can't imagine that the hearings will be pleasant for any of their family [regardless of what the judge rules] and I don't think this had been an easy decision for Cher.  No matter what happens, I hope he can somehow find his peace and make the most of his middle-aged life.

RIP Tommy Smothers, the Yo-Yo Man:

    I'm gutted.  😢

While I'd see their show rerun later on, the first place I recall Tommy Smothers was as the voice of the rebellious Ted E. Bear who wanted to see if winter might be worth skipping hibernation in The Bear Who Slept Through Christmas (1973)! I mean, it seemed there was an entire dimension of toy-sized bears who lived in a human-like world. Yes, it could have been totally sappy but somehow the way he voiced the character, it got me to think that he was curious about this parallel human world enough to rebel and leave everyone he knew to seek it out!

On a more sombre note, this had been  a rather sad year for him as not only did he find out he had stage 2 lung cancer but he  lost his younger sister Sherry as well as  his eldest son Thomas Bolyn Smothers IV by his first union (by who he has a grandson). It also needs to be noted that the siblings'  father  was Major Thomas Bolyn Smothers, Jr.- a West Point graduate who been a military man who died at age 36  being held in a Japanese POW ship in  the last days of WWII in 1945 after surviving the Bataan Death March- having sent the rest of his family (including his wife Ruth pregnant with their daughter)back to California shortly before the Japanese forces invaded.

I hope he soon gets to catch up  with his father, sister and his son and the four get to share some amazing stories from their lives. RIP, Mr. Smothers!

  20. Let's keep in mind, as best anyone knows, being left be by the press was JG's wishes at the time of JG's parting ways with the extended Gilbert but if anyone knows what his current wishes/MO are at age 56, no one is saying! However,  I agree that it's likely that it would be easier for the cast to not talk about or acknowledge the extended Gilberts' dealings with him during his youth/LHOTP production. Of course, I think that the late Mr. Bull and Miss MacGregor each had been starving performers long enough in their youths not to let anyone else bully them- including relating positive anecdotes re JG . Moreover, it's also possible that JG may have kept in touch with one or both of them until their own passings- more confident of their discretion than other cast members.

One odd omission that no one has seemed to address is how ML dealt with JG much less  whether he attempted to become a new father to him (as he did MG) after their adoptive but, at the time, non-custodial father's early death!

  21. I get that MG seemed rather jealous (and, as per her longstanding beefs with Melissa Sue Anderson and Shannen Doherty) VERY capable of holding grudges long after the initial schism's causes had been over.

However,  it's puzzling that every other surviving cast member seems to have adopted a code of silence- barely acknowledging JG having been present during the production- much less being candid re whether they have knowledge of his  fate after adulthood.

Hence, all I can think of is that since many of the cast members (especially those up in years) are depending more and more on nostalgic reunions, meet-and-greets,etc.  for the a good part of their current livelihood, it's possible that MG may have subtly if not overtly threatened the above over the issue of JG's fate.

Now, that you mention it, it's puzzling that none of the interviewers not only haven't thusfar interviewed him but don't even claim to have attempted to seek him out- much less asked others to level about him.

I'm wondering if he may have changed his entire name to his original birth name when he and the extended Gilbert family parted ways!

Again, I stress the above is speculation and NOT claiming any kind of 'inside scoop' on my part.

  22. Sitting on a tall sea cliff outside the northwestern Spanish port city of La Coruna/A Coruna is the Tower of Hercules (formerly known as Farum Brigantium], the world's oldest extant lighthouse at 130 feet tall which guides ships to this day!

As impressive as it is currently, what's even more amazing is that it's been in operation  starting since at least the 100's AD when the Roman Emperor Trajan (born near present-day Seville) commissioned an architect to either build or rebuild the edifice to be modeled on the Lighthouse of Alexandria (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World) . While the inner stairwell is definitely Roman in origin with later exterior walls and the upper part of the tower being built in more recent centuries, it's possible that this may be even older  than the Romans. La Coruna/A Coruna harbor happens to be the closest port geographically via point to point from the Iberian Pen insula and the lighthouse points in the direction of current Great Britain. Why this is vital is due to the fact that its southwestern pen insula Cornwall had been the main supplier of  tin since at least 1500 BC. Tin being the vital component of the metal  compound called bronze ! Yes, Emperor Trajan wanted to establish/re-establish a beacon to safeguard the port linking Iberian and the rest of the Roman Empire to its vital supply link!

Oh, and it's called the Tower of Hercules due to the its legendary foundation which, as per this legend, a local giant tyrant Geryon was finally defeated by none other than Herc himself after a three day battle. After which Hercules ordered the locals to bury the tyrants skull under the seaside cliff then build a lighthouse atop it. Regardless of the validity of this myth, the coat of arms for La Coruna/A Coruna consists of the lighthouse itself  atop a rock sealing a giant crowned skull with crossbones- all flanked with scallop shells!
