I’m sorry.  I didn’t mean to imply that you needed to read the books or that the show didn’t need to explain it. I thought I was responding to your comment, “I suppose the book explains things better?” I just meant that if you were curious, I would be happy to tell you.

    Hah! No offense!

I am glad this show is back but it frustrates me sometimes because it seems to "assume" all viewers are also book readers.

Season 3 was soooooooo loooooong ago I have obviously forgotten many details!! 😄

I figure the show probably won't "show' Roger and Bree reintegrating with the future --we will just have to assume everything went smoothly. They remembered every telephone number and the person they were calling answered on the first ring and accepted all long distance charges. They are able to board a train and go to a certain hospital and baby gets operation with no questions asked - no complications. Easy breezy!

I (and I'm sure many others) would LOVE to tell you how it plays out in the book, but you need to ask in the Book Thread.

I expect the show to show me or tell me.

As far as I have seen -- there has NEVER been mention of Claire or Frank setting up a trust or bank account for Bree. And when she decided to go back in time to find her mother and father -- she did it on the spur of the moment. She didn't even take the time to get proper clothing. That Joe guy was never mentioned. And since she left so suddenly it didn't seem as if she informed anyone (didn't they even show her roommate or wondering what happened to her?

The show made it seem as if they were just going to pop back to the future and voila! they are back in the modern world like they never left. The actual logistics are treated with a handwave.

You bring up good points, but I don't think they're planning to just go to the hospital like a normal patient.  I'm pretty sure they are going to call Joe specifically.  If he brings them into the hospital, paperwork and insurance become formalities.  And, realistic or not, the scenes we saw of Frank and Claire in Boston give the impression that the family was very well off.  I think we are to assume that Bree has more than enough money in the bank to cover Mandy's surgery.

I suppose the book explains things better? In the show - I feel we are supposed to take it on faith that they just go back to the future and will have no issues with finances or any little pesky details like getting to Boston from Wilmington in cloths from the 18th century.

If they get to Wilmington, Bree and Roger could get some money from Joe via Western Union and take a train to Boston. There's no TSA or anything. No one is really going to bother a white family on a vacation.

To bring a child to a hospital for a major operation - even in the 1970's one still needed some form of ID. and back then -- emergency rooms could out right refuse to help if you didn't have money/insurance.

and sure payphones on every corner. But they required a dime/quarter to make a call. and sure -- you could make a collect call - assuming Claire remembered Joe's telephone number and it hasn't changed in all the years they have been gone. but the person on the other end not only has to answer -- they have to accept the charges.

Perhaps they will address the details in the next ep?

As a non book reader the practical side of me wonders how Roger and Bri expect to jump through the stones and get medical care with no insurance, no address, no birth certificate or social security number for Amanda but with a lot of stuff on this show I have to suspend reality and just go with it :)

    Thank you!

I forgot to mention that in my post. They haven't been to their own time -- in what? years? They basically have no family so... how do they have money? Insurance? Credit cards? A home? Anything??? (and just a side note -- what year was it when Bree decided to go back in time to find her mother? because before 1972 -1974 a single woman couldn't get her own credit card.

I thought it was a great episode, although it seemed to cover a lot of time, very quickly. I always enjoy time travel talk and there was lots in this episode. Some of Sam's best acting on view as well.

That Wendigo, I didn't figure him for a straight-up idiot. I get being desperate to return to his own time, but threatening Claire and Jamie is not the way to go about it.

Looking forward to the next episode, too.

Ha! He doesn't realize he is a character on the Claire and Jaime show! So he doesn't know that he has no real agency and that threatening them is a bad idea!

The time travel thing just trips me out. Like -- HOW does it work????? So this time Roger and Bree and the kids went through the stones just fine but last time they went nowhere?

And when Claire was explaining things to that dude from the future -- she said something like -- just "think" of the place you want to go and the stones will take you.

    Say what????

I am glad they are moving the plot along quickly. Seems to me Jaime and Claire should look a LOT older than they do. But it was cool to see John Grey. And that young man is Jaime's son and Bree's brother. Right? Oh and fighting on the wrong side of history!

  7. Late to the game. I live in the Northwoods/Tundra -- summer is short and sweet and MUST be enjoyed because it is gone in the blink of an eye!

I knew that was some kind of dream sequence because NO WAY will this show kill off Claire. Ummm!!! Without her the show doesn't exist!

Anyway. No way I buy that Tom killed Malva. But god his story explains a lot. The child of his brother. He already saw his wife as some sort of witch and of course transposed those feelings onto baby/child Malva. Is it any wonder that poor girl was as messed up as she was! But Tom never came across as a murderer to me.

Ok. So how many time travelers are there anyway? And I'm going to need a better explanation how the stones work because why exactly can't Jaime go forward into the future? Why can only certain people go through the stones? Are they all somehow related to one another?

Why does Eliza wear her hair in such an elaborate style? She doesn't wear evening gowns when other women do, so why not a simpler hair style? At first I guessed that Ivy did Eliza's hair, but it looks the same when Ivy is away. Maybe Eliza learned how to do that style and finds it easier to do it that way.

I notice Eliza's perfectly coifed hair every ep! It's like watching old movies -- the women's hair never move-- even when the wind blows!

Well, yes, but that's the point.  Women often took jobs where they were the cook/nanny/housekeeper in a home for room, board, and a bit of money.  That's the way it often was arranged from what I've read.

I keep coming back to the same point.  William's angst over her cooking doesn't make sense.  A woman in her social position would never be expected to cook all her own meals, even with kids.  OTOH, his upset over her putting herself in constant danger would be understandable.  Especially if she was going to be the mother of his children, for instance.

Especially since it's not an issue with Arabella -- who clearly does NOT do her own cooking.

it's always been William's concern for Eliza and her safety that endeared me to the character in the first place.

I just figure the Eliza is a terrible cook is like the running joke within the show that Eliza is a female private detective and everyone acts surprised!!!

Just caught this show.  I've only seen the first season and all I can find other than that is mid-way through season 3, so I'm just waiting for season 2 to cycle back.  And to catch the first 20 minutes I missed.

Anyway, I really like it.  I don't usually read/watch period pieces, so unless one of them whips up a TV dinner in a microwave, I'm happily oblivious.

I thought the lead actor was Hugh Jackman at first.

Don't really have much to add, especially since I watched the first season before I found this thread and it's running together, but I'm looking forward to season 2 and beyond!

I hope you enjoy it! I have found all the characters to be charming. I am usually not into mysteries but this one seems different. By that I mean -- it's more about the relationships than the mystery of the week -- for me anyway.

Except that we know that Eliza is short on money at this point. Now if she and William get together that would be a different situation since he has a steady income.

And wasn't Arabella bankrupt or having issues with the restaurant costs?  Isn't that why she had to do the swap for fake jewels?  How much help could she afford to have?

It looks like she (Arabella) lives with her mother (that was the same room we saw when her mother was in the initial scene with Eliza) Her mother is the one with the money. Remember her mother would NOT lend her money for her restaurant. Her mother also bad-mouthed the deceased husband.

Conclusion -- the beautifully decorated drawing room and the Cook -- belong to Arabella's wealthy mother.

That makes sense. I should have said cook in my post. My point was just that there’s no reason that Eliza and William couldn’t also have a cook/maid (which Eliza already has) so that Eliza could continue working, instead of having to care for the household all by herself.

Right! That was the norm for many people. They had a cook. Maybe a housekeeper or maid. A nanny for sure if there were children. There is no reason why Eliza and William couldn't have help around the house so Eliza could continue her carrel. I know! In Victorian England (and elsewhere) that would be completely unconventional But haven't the characters been quoted as being unconventional?

Oh, that could be, but she probably also has a cook and at least one maid.

When she mentioned the chef at the restaurant she specifically said CHEF and when she mentioned the cook at home -- she specifically said COOK.

So I took that to mean they are two separate people.

True she didn't but she certainly didn't but I still felt that she "shoved" Eliza out the door.

I think that scene was meant to tug on the audience's heartstrings.

What I noticed - Arabella doesn't actually cook any of the meals and or cakes/deserts presented on the show. She has a chef at the restaurant (both times William was late it was mentioned they were planning to eat at a restaurant) When Arabella specifically mentioned the veal blah blah blah and William said he had never heard of it but it sounded delicious) -- she said her COOK had prepared it.

Eliza should just do the same thing!  Present Ivy's cooking as her own

Those were funny moments. I don't think he really took her seriously either. I saw the part with the bomb as a turning point. He saw just how determined and serious she is about what she does. He wanted her to get out of there because he is the "man" and it is his job to take the risk, but she didn't leave him AND she saved him.

I LOVED that scene of her sticking her head between William's arm and leg to get a better look at the wires in the bomb. I replayed it a couple times!  Also when he says - get out! and she says NO!

    haha!

That is why I said that for me, this was the first episode that he didn't seem exasperated with her and saw her with new eyes.

I must admit in the earlier seasons --  I kind of liked the dynamic between William and Eliza. Especially right after her fatter died and William would lock Eliza in jail for some small infraction. I mean -- some of that was cute and funny. IMO. he had all the hand at first but as time goes by ... Eliza is quickly becoming William's equal. She may even surpass him as time goes by. She is brilliant after all!

Enjoyable episode and like the rest of you, I loved how everybody worked together.   I also love the idea of Eliza working for Nash as the head of the main agency.  And good for Nash for offering her the job and realizing how good a detective she is.   Honestly, I'd rather see Eliza end up with Nash, because as swoony as William is,  she would not ultimately be happy with him if he insisted that she live her life as a conventional Victorian wife and mother.    My guess is that if the show continues, we will be seeing William changing how he looks at Eliza and grow to accept her for who she is and make his peace  to where if he wants HER, he is going to get the whole package and on her terms.

That is exactly how I see it and how I hope it all plays out.

Arabella said something like ---  for what William wants right now-- Eliza will not be able to give it to him because her ambitions will always come first.

I thought I saw the first inkling of William seeing the possibilities of a future with Eliza after working with her.

  18. That was a lovely season ending. Everyone working together was great! and I love the set-up for next season! Cuz you just know Eliza is going to take Nash up on his offer -- how can she refuse? She gets her own office and 20 men working for her!

Eliza and William were simply adorable the entire ep! It gave me a glimpse of how their future could be. They can be the unconventional Victorian couple! BOTH working at their own private detective agency!!! Win Win for all of us!

The fake proposal made me LOL. "Tell him how you proposed, Darling!" Haha! But that whole scene just turned so hot when William's "fake" proposal kind of became real.

At the beginning of the season William still had an idea in his mind of Eliza eventually settling down and wanting to become the conventual wife and mother. He gave up on the idea when she basically poo-pooed the whole notion. So William started dating (stepping out with) Arabella. But of course the entire time he is with Arabella he is talking about and thinking about Eliza - to the point that even Arabella could not ignore the fact that clearly William is in love with Eliza.

I think what Arabella said to William was a portent of how things will have to be -- What I mean is that William is going to have to adjust his mindset about what he wants from a relationship. This episode seemed to show (to me!) that he basically finds Eliza fascinating. I am hoping next season they grow even closer.

I am just going to say once again -- I love me some Moses Valentine!

As soon as we saw the scene of Eliza and Ivy with their new hats and clothes, it was obvious that she wasn't going to get to keep the money.  Which meant that Redhead was not forthcoming about something.

I have to confess I didn't really follow the rest of it.  Who killed the dead guy that William and Fitzroy were looking into?  Was that the Fake Heir Hunter?  Or was it Redhead?

Redhead killed his father seven years ago.  I think it was because he was upset at what happened to his mom.  Did he know about the 20,000 pounds?  Fake Heir Hunter said that Reginald owed him 20,000 pounds.  So what was his plan, he was going to have Redhead claim it and then turn it all over to him?  What was in it for Redhead?

As far as William and Eliza and Arabella... William isn't dumb, he should know he's being used in part by Arabella to dig at Eliza.  But then he seemed completely clueless about why Eliza was upset.  Next week is the season finale, I wonder if he is going to dump Arabella.  But it seems to me that William and Eliza are one of those "we are waiting with bated breath to see them get together"  couples which probably means they won't for now.  William doesn't treat her very well, I'm kind of hoping Nash shows up next week and she goes out with him.

The fake heir hunter killed the dude. They were both owed money by the dead Lord/Earl/Duke (whatever he was - red head's father) They agreed to both just get half of what they were owed but fake heir hunter killed the dude when he reneged on the deal. ("He came at  me with a knife-- I had to kill him in self-defense!")<<< fake heir hunter claimed to Eliza and William during interrogation

I have NO CLUE what is going to happen between William and Eliza and Arabella! But I want to find out!

I understand all of the interest in the Arabella/William/Eliza triangle.  I understand the interest in the human side of things.   But I expect PBS and their British imports to do relationships better than this.  For me, this is Hallmark Christmas movie channel territory.  See here, if you aren't familiar with Hallmark.

And couldn't they start with that, and build some sort of grown up relationship, whether it leads to romance or not?  I mean we are already in fantasy territory here, so can't we pretend that there are two Victorians out there that don't have Victorian sensibilities and morals?

Ha! That's funny! it would be a different show entirely!!!!!

But I was thinking along those lines when I read something the showrunner was quoted as saying about Eliza and William the the will they- won't they aspect of their relationship. it's basically the entire premise of the show. (according to Hannah New)

I admit -- it' makes me kind of impatient. Don't get me wrong. This is one of my favorite shows right now. I think all the actors and the characters they portray  are cute.  I like the banter between Eliza and William. I do wish they had done the - Victorian Couple Solves Crimes Together --- without the will-they/won't-they tedium..

Fitzroy is either going to be an Inspector Clouseau style detective with his complete obtuseness about William's questions re Eliza, or he's going to be a Victorian Columbo with his ability to completely rattle suspects into confession with that same obtuseness.

Fitzroy: Do you want to know what I know about this case -- or just what I know in general? <<< The look William gave him made me LOL!
