I don't know about other cities, but Cleveland's show turned into a hot mess before it even opened. They started selling tickets for an unnamed venue a while back and then rented out part of an old industrial building in a less than appealing area, which they are calling an art house. Then once they finally found their venue, they started telling people oh sorry, those tickets you bought for this day and time, sorry, we are  going to give you tickets for a totally different day and time. At $40 -$50 ticket, that's not okay.

Yeah, they’ve been advertising aggressively in New York, and everything I’ve heard is that it’s at best a disappointing cash grab, if not an outright scam.

  2. They seem to be moving forward with having Cody compete in some capacity so I’m interested to see how that goes. Reports are he tested negative but it seems odd to not isolate him at all - I’m not sure if I were working on the show I’d be super comfortable declaring he’s in the clear to dance with a backup. And I believe there are standard union rules they have to comply with, they can’t just wing it.

They won’t have dress rehearsal footage, maybe they relax that for COVID and can use other rehearsal footage? Or he and the new female pro do their dance masked?

They're still doing the married-pros must live apart rule, and I don't understand that one (again) considering last year we saw some of the celebs off-show doing whatever they wanted.

Lindsay also said that Sam (her husband) was probably going to come to the show one week, so if they are allowing outside people to come doesn't that defeat the contestants-must-not-interact rule?

It’s not about reducing spread in general, necessarily, it’s about reducing spread among teams. So like, if Sam is visiting Lindsay, and he gets Covid, then Lindsay and her partner have to drop out as close contacts.

But if Sasha gets exposed to Covid, and he’s still living with Emma, then it takes out 2 teams, Sasha + partner AND Emma + partner, and production is going to be scrambling to make the elimination schedule work. That’s why they can live together again after one of them gets cut.

That said, if they’re all hanging out off camera and breaking the rules, then it all does feel a bit like theater. But I think production is just trying to prevent a scenario where half the cast is in quarantine from an exposure all at the same time, which would decimate the production schedule.

  4. I came across this recent podcast interview with Tom and Bob Saget. I didn’t listen to the whole thing but just scanned it for any DWTS gossip.
    https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/tom-bergeron-tells-us-of-his-legendary-broadcasting/id1504319251?i=1000535137376

I don’t know that any of these are new/surprising but:

    - Tom believes he was fired for publicly disagreeing with the casting of Sean Spicer. (Or any political figure.) Says he could tell that whole season the powers that be were unhappy with him, and he cleaned out his dressing room at the end of the season because he could tell it was coming

    - He wasn’t sad about it, as, “The show he left wasn’t the one he joined.” He and Erin were united in their disagreements and said “they had the most fun being fired.”

(Seems pretty clear there will be no return of Tom)

    - Don’t know that there’s a way to fact check this, but Bob tells a story of a sitcom he was trying to get picked up and a former network exec told him he needed to do the DWTS or they wouldn’t pick up his other show. I mean, I wouldn’t be surprised if true, and he never did the show and his other show didn’t go forward so 🤷🏼‍♀️ But definitely am not shocked if those sorts of deals go into the casting.

Whether Jojo dances the "lead" or the "follow," I hope she and Jenna decide their roles early on and commit to them. Personally, I would prefer they didn't switch back and forth and I would like to see Jenna dance the lead since she is the pro.

I couldn't fully enjoy Johnny and Britt last season because, a lot of the time, I felt they were dancing the same roles.

Height will matter here though, right? JoJo is tall, like 5’10, and I think Jenna is little, like 5’2. It’d be hard for them to get in a proper frame if JoJo’s not leading, I think?

I surprisingly don't hate this cast.  A few of them I don't know and I think Peleton instructors are popular but NOT stars.  But they have enough people where I'll watch the first few weeks for sure.

I’m laughing at the Peloton instructor because he’s literally a professional backup dancer. I don’t have a Peloton but used to go to his classes live in New York and he would always talk about his dance gigs. (His classes were the best because they always had great music and rhythm)

So contestants with professional dance/performance experience include:

    Amanda Kloots

Jan from the Office (was Roxy on Broadway, trained in ballet in her youth)

    JoJo

    Mel C

    Cody from Peloton

and dance-adjacent, if you consider gymnastics that way, Suni Lee

Did I miss anyone? I actually don’t mind dancers on this show so maybe by having so many people will complain less?

Not true, and here's why: As speculated, JoJo will probably take the lead role as well as the follow role. Now what if she's better at leading than following? And if that's the case, and I were her partner, I'd make sure she did all the leading in subsequent dancers in order to show her best dancing skills. So, in essence for some, that would equal "special treatment".

Not true and here’s why: As speculated, there’s a big strong WWE contestant in the cast. Now what if he’s better at lifting a small partner above his head than moving his feet? And if that’s the case, and I were his partner, I’d make sure he did a lot of lifting in all the dances that allow them to show off his best dancing skills. So in essence for some, that would equal “special treatment”.

(You’re reaching. Welcome to DWTS, this is how it works.)

Well, already this would mean that the show would be changing things to accommodate Jojo.  Is that really fair?  The male celebrities would be following a standard but Jojo would have special rules?  That's the problem that I see.  Understand I'm not saying she shouldn't be on the show.  She should be paired with a male pro and make things even across the board.  But, this is my take and like you said in your response, I respectfully disagree with you.

Ballroom dance rules are NOT written for male/female, they are written for lead/follow. One partner leads, the other follows, regardless of gender, no rule changes necessary. It’s incredibly common to see same sex pairs in youth competitions, just on the basis of them having more girls than boys to go around, and yes, having a problem with it is bigoted.

I haven’t followed any of the other DWTS shows that have done this yet, but I hope it’s not all “fun friends” choreography and that Jenna also choreographs a “romantic” dance for them at least once. Because if it’s normal for the opposite gender pairs it should be normal for this pair too.

(I should mention, though hopefully it’s obvious, given JoJo’s age I mean like, fairytale romantic, not Gleb-on-a-bed romantic.)

While I don't who this JoJo person is, I'm excited for them finally having a same sex pairing, and even more pleased that it's Jenna.

Jojo is...basically a children's entertainer. Picture a Lisa Frank Trapper Keeper covered in glitter, but come to life and kind of, dancing and shouting at you. She was on Dance Mom's as a kid and then parlayed that into YouTube stardom, (kids) pop music, and a vast merchandising deal (her stuff was everywhere in Target for a while.) Her target demographic is probably 5-9 year old girls.

That said, since turning 18, and also in the way she handled coming out, she's given glimpses of maturing better than I thought she would, like she's in on the “joke” of why people find her annoying. I've found myself liking her more than I thought was possible from her general persona as a kid? The thing that will be interesting with being paired with Jenna is that they both can be a lot of energy/intensity, so together it might be A LOT. I bet a bunch of people will stay on the “annoyed” train.

ETA: I forgot to mention she is known for driving a Tesla covered entirely with terrifying pictures of her own face. How you feel about that may inform how you feel about Jojo as a whole. https://www.buzzfeed.com/lyapalater/jojo-siwa-car-covered-pictures-of-her-face

As gymnasts and athletes go, Suni might be quite good. Or she could have a very reserved personality that doesn't quite translate to good DWTS content. Hopefully whoever her partner is is able to lift her out of a shell should that become necessary.

I’d like to see Suni with Pasha. He’s been really great with his past partners (even Baskins) especially in making them feel comfortable, and I’d like to see him with someone with potential. He’s also one of the shortie male pros (and I’m kind of bored with Sasha.)

And that link mentioned Kenya Moore too. Both Kenya and Amanda are supposedly 5'10", so we're looking to have several tall women on this season's cast! If Amanda is paired with Alan, then my guess is that Kenya will be paired with Keo.

KB actually had Keo out this season as a pro. Her pro list, from another post: https://www.dancedishwithkb.com/post/dancing-with-the-stars-season-30-updates

    Spoiler

Your pros this season: 7 men, 8 women

    Men:

    Val Chmerkovskiy

    Pasha Pashkov

    Sasha Farber

    Brandon Armstrong

    Artem Chigvintsev

    Gleb Savchenko

    Alan Bersten

    Women:

    Cheryl Burke

    Jenna Johnson

    Britt Stewart

    Daniella Karagach

    Sharna Burgess

    Emma Slater

    Lindsay Arnold

    Witney Carson

She’s also reporting Olivia Jade spotted  with Val now, in that original post 🙄 Hopefully she dances better than she rows.

  12. This is unconfirmed speculation, but Jojo might not be the only one with a dance background because Amanda Kloots posted to her Instagram that she’s “starting a new adventure” today that has her teary eyed with excitement because it’s “something she’s wanted to do forever.”

She’s talked about DWTS being a dream before, she certainly has connections with Carrie Ann (and maybe some producers?) from The Talk, and fits the heartwarming/tearjerker contestant slot, so I’ve had my eyes on her for a while. She’s also a former Rockette and Broadway dancer. I’d be very unsurprised to see her in the cast.

ETA: Apparently this is CONFIRMED after all - Kristyn Burtt has her in and paired with Alan

A year later James on his Instagram is still trying to process not making the finals or winning DWTS.  When his family moved to Texas recently he listed his loss on DWTS (according to him heavily favored to win) as a reason to leave L.A.

I think he could use some therapy. It’s just a game show. Was he banking on tour money? Was his pride heavily wounded? I get that it was upsetting the way he left and they literally lost a pregnancy at the same time (wasn’t his wife still in the hospital the night of the semis?) But if he’s still this hurt by it a year later, it’s probably time to talk to someone vs just moving to the country.  Surely he had lost out on other roles before?

I am not a therapist at all but it seems likely that the pregnancy loss feelings (and as I understand it, his wife was in pretty big danger as well) and the DWTS loss feelings got all tangled in each other, considering the way it went down. He could be transferring some emotions. Hopefully he has someone he can work through things with.

I do agree with him they didn’t handle it the best though, the making him do his first dance and then judging him without mentioning the loss, as if they didn’t know? I mean, you can only judge the dance you’re presented with, but a nod to how he was doing would have probably gone a long way there.

The thing that pisses me off is that Johnny gets worse scores than crappy dancers and Carrie Ann picks Vernon over him?

Maybe they think just because there's not a live audience there to see them, the TV audience can't see them as well? 😃

I have heard people say that the producers have been communicating with them on their phones, to keep distancing up? Maybe they could use that to give them heads up for when they’re about to be on camera.

I think that's because of the lack of other entertainment around.  The show has if not an actual monopoly an enormous advantage at the moment.

Of course that won't stop Tyra from securing the job next season because of the numbers.

I mean, that’s why I’m here. I got really bored with how formulaic this show is the last few seasons, but now I’m even more bored with nothing else to do!

The thing that Tyra doesn’t have, that I think would be the hardest about live TV that Tom was good and under appreciated at, is keeping things moving along without seeming like that’s what you’re doing. If producers are telling Tyra to rush she seems like she’s rushing, if they’re telling her to stall she seems like she’s stalling. It’s best not to yell at people, “HURRY HURRY HURRY, we’re running out of time!!” Even if that’s true.

    - Olympic figure skater and on-air commentator Johnny Weir and pro Britt Stewart dancing the Rumba to "Reflection" from "Mulan"

😴 A lot of repeats in here. They really don’t take enough advantage of Disney villain songs, which are more fun. Like, someone do a Be Prepared paso instead of the millionth pirate dance.

  18. I guess we shall see if the marrieds get to reunite if one of them is eliminated!

Just sort of random thoughts: Pasha seems like a really great teacher. So far he just seems to get his partners to relax and trust him. On Carol, I watched the first episode of Tiger King and stopped because I found it boring, so I don’t have strong feelings about her, but I do think she improved a tad more than the basketball player, just on the merits.

Also, what in the hell outfit did Val put Monica in? Val - no.
