  1. If Iman doesn’t win it’s because he’s too cool for this show. If Cody wins it proves no one who actually watches this show actually votes, and if you have a rabid fan base coming in you can stand around onstage and still win.

I’ve already mentioned what drives me nuts about Cody still being in but the overlying thing is — he’s supposed to have this big flamboyant personality, and I know he has SOME because I’ve taken his classes and found them fun — but we haven’t even seen ANY of it on the show. He’s been presented as this piece of cardboard that huffs and puffs while Cheryl half-assedly dances around him and where is the fun guy that’s supposed to be there?? Is he just super nervous? Do he and Cheryl hate each other?? Why does no one coach him on performance the way they did with Suni? I could forgive some of the weaker dancing if he was giving more dynamic performance energy but we’re getting neither from him. It’s going to be so unsatisfying if/when he wins.

It sucks to lose Suni the moment she seemed like she was finding her groove and actually having fun. (Also, I’m sad she said she didn’t have anyone to talk to about her sudden fame. I’m going to need the other former gymnast gold medalists to start a group chat with Suni asap.)

I won’t miss Melora. She was getting on my nerves, her personality getting a little to close to her Jan character.

  2. Oof Melora, bringing on an adoring fan to talk about how great you are and then preemptively declaring yourself an inspiration to all women by plugging your documentary about how you are the savior to this woman by just existing is giving me some egomaniac vibes.

Lol that they just cut her mic this time.

  3. I don’t know, I feel like Melora got the shorter end of the stick on song choice because I can’t think of that song without people referencing it to make fun of Dawsons Creek

(Maybe they can drag James back from Texas to get in a cameo)

Cody does not seem to gel with Cheryl but loves dance, still something is off there.

We got a lot of Britt featured in the pro dances this week and it made me think we may have really missed out on a Cody/Britt pairing that could have been great. I think she would have matched his energy a lot better and may have given him more interesting choreography. Worked on his weird faces, maybe? He was definitely better last night than he has been but still not great. I’m resigned to him ending up in the finals at this point. He frustrates me because I think there’s a world in which he could have earned his spot in there but that’s not the world of the dances we’ve actually gotten from him.

If I had to bet I’d guess we lose Amanda and Melora next week. I don’t think I’d miss either of them. Suni feels to me like she’s there because someone told her she had to be, which makes her dances less enjoyable to watch. I think a final without JoJo would be a less interesting final, she deserves to be in it. But I think I’m also on team Iman for the win.

Kaitlyn Bristowe still doesn't pop as a dancer and it showed in that tour-preview performance. You would have had time at the end of the show if you hadn't wasted time talking to her, Tyra.

I honestly couldn’t pick her out of a line-up, she’s so unmemorable to me. Granted I’m not a Bachelor/ette watcher but I did watch last season, and…nothing, you could pluck anyone off the streets of LA and tell me they were Kaitlyn.

  6. I feel like I’m supposed to like the dance offs but I find it so hard to pay attention to two different sets of choreography happening at the same time.

I thought Cody finally actually let loose a bit during his though. That’s the energy I was hoping to get from him from the start.

Did I hear correctly and my fave Mark Ballas is coming back to perform next week? Will be great to see him again. Hopefully it won't be cringy with BC Jean's MySpace schtick.

No, they’re performing tonight on the singalong Queen thing.

"Mike"?! I had to Google the cast! That's like saying "Eldrick" to "Who's the greatest golfer?"!

*shrugs, adjusts grandma shawl, pushes up reading glasses*

I know him best as Mike from Real World (Back to New York). Who always rode that line between endearing and annoying, was super sheltered and said ignorant things but seemed willing to learn in a sort of love/hate friendship with Coral, who occasionally ran around the loft doing a weird character he called "The Miz"

(I will miss him, he continues to be endearing/annoying, and I liked his commitment)

I think Dancing with the Stars should be about people like Miz and Cody who you didn't know could dance, but worked hard and put in the effort.

    For reference, Cody's background: https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/tv/story/2021-11-01/dancing-with-the-stars-cody-rigsby-peloton

    Quote

"...Not bad for a job Rigsby took to earn a few hundred bucks while trying to make it as a professional dancer."

"Rigsby says he was always a natural performer, teaching his sixth-grade classmates the choreography he picked up from Spears’ videos. Though there was rarely enough money for dance lessons, he became involved in show choir and musical theater."

"After college, this led him to New York to train as a dancer, juggling professional gigs (performing with Nicki Minaj at a Victoria’s Secret fashion show) with whatever side hustle would help pay his bills (cater-waiter jobs)."

"Lovewell, who first bonded with Rigsby when they were hired to dance at a lavish Venetian-themed wedding in Washington, D.C., was immediately struck by his sense of humor. “He says the things you’re thinking but would never say out loud, but it’s not mean,” she says. “It’s this delicate balance.”

Rigsby was working at the Box, a nightclub on the Lower East Side, when he heard about a new fitness company looking for performers interested in teaching. He sent in a headshot to Peloton, figuring it would be a good side hustle."

Honestly it's why I'm so annoyed by him, he has the background and he's still only as good as Mike. [Insert Tyra, "WE WERE ALL ROOTING FOR YOU" clip here] Like it doesn't seem like he's done super intricate choreography in his past, if you watch the Nikki Minaj clip, but I would have thought he'd have better stage presence, and more confidence?

The only ones left with no dance background that I can tell are Iman, Jimmy, and Olivia. Who honestly all have a shot at making the finals. You could argue gymnastics is not dance background and include Suni, maybe, but gymnasts on this show are also usually considered ringers.

But count me among those scratching their heads over why some couples got the real thing and some got cover versions of varying quality (mostly poor). Is it just cheaper to pay for the rights to fewer songs? Or are they just making sure the house band and singers earn their paychecks? I tend to suspect it's the latter, since they do the same thing on Disney night, and we know they already have the rights to all of those songs.

I have a few friends who work in music licensing and have picked up enough to know it’s definitely cheaper to license the rights to the cover than rights to the whole original track. If you’re going to cover it you just need to pay for the publishing, that is, the license for the intellectual property of the music and lyrics. If you’re playing the whole song you’re also paying out performance royalties to all the original singers, background singers, session musicians, etc.

Also, tangentially related, if you’re looking for old performances on YouTube and you notice the official DWTS account has pulled them down, 9 times out of 10 it’s because they probably had a contract for only a certain amount of time and the music licensing rights have probably expired.

I have no doubt that Cody is getting a ton of votes from people not watching the show at all. Voting instructions are posted on the various Peloton groups with reminders of when to vote. I would be surprised to find that the female audience for DWTS is voting for Cody. His performances on the show have not been anything that I expected. I expected more energy and joy and fun from him, like his rides. His dances have all seen kind of forced, uncomfortable, and painful. They don't look good.

This! I’m kind of shocked how painful his performances have been, given what I knew about him from before. Like obviously he didn’t have an elite dance career, but I expected him to have a little more body awareness and ability to pick up choreography - he always seems like he’s marking his steps and his arms just sort of fling about with no connection to the dance. And we haven’t seen his personality come through really at all - he seems so uncomfortable in front of the camera in a way I didn’t expect because obviously he’s used to being filmed for his rides. Part of it is that the partnership with Cheryl doesn’t seem to be working at all, and it really seems like some of his issues could be fixed if someone was working with him on them, and it really feels like she’s not doing it.

Re: his fans, I don’t think they think he’s their imaginary boyfriend - he’s their imaginary rom-com gay best friend. The one who doesn’t have a purpose in life besides to sit around and yas queen all their decisions. I think the thing that makes me the most uncomfortable about them is it’s very weird to me to see what seems to be largely suburban women in their 30s and 40s appropriating the language of gay men from Manhattan? It feels very cringe — you can support him without needing to adopt the “yaaas boo, you slay queen!” lauguage. I can’t speak for the gay community but as a fellow white lady it makes me uncomfortable - it feels tokenizing. It’s giving me the same energy as women who have their bachelorette parties at a gay bar.

All that said, I think it’s Amanda and Suni who are toast next week unless one of them pulls out some breakthrough dance, or unless someone else has a particularly bad week. They’ve both been sort of stuck at the same level, and they’re running out of time to show something else.

I don’t believe JoJo was actually in the bottom two, but hey, who knows? Maybe the general DWTS audience has a problem with two women dancing together.

I don’t think they fake the actual bottom two. I have no problem believing she was there - first, I think she’s been getting such consistent high scores I don’t think people believed they needed to vote for her, second, I really don’t think a lot of people are voting. If the total vote count is low, you can see wild swings week to week, which we’re seeing.

And also why I’m concerned about an extremely annoying Cody upset, because he does have passionate fans who are organized and way too into him.

  13. I’m very concerned no one’s voting this season except for Cody’s cult, and he’s going to Bobby Bones his way into a win.

I need Jojo, Iman, or Jimmie to pull through for me. Or, you know, even Olivia, she keeps growing on me and I feel like Val is more relaxed this season in a way I’m enjoying.

What a coincidence that Queen is every single person's favorite band of all-time!

It’s gonna be awkward next week when Janet Jackson is going to be their favorite artist of all time, when Britney Spears was already their favorite artist of all time.

I bet it is! And the Chosen one Jojo is Butchering We Will Rock you on it as well (per the commerical)

Jimmie is also performing on it. And Derek and Hayley, and Mark and BC (for the Mark fans.) It feels like some sort of corporate synergy thing.

Cody still dances like he’s counting the steps. I don’t think he’s any better than Mike, and I still want him to be better than he is.

  16. Did anyone else notice the bizarre faces Cody makes throughout his dances? I find it so distracting, he does it throughout the dance, like he’s holding his breath and then blowing it out from his bottom jaw?

Is he still out of breath from COVID? What is that? Definitely if Suni is getting comments about being expressive someone should address his weird breathing?
