  1. I'm enjoying this show - love all the actors in it and also enjoying the story.  But could somebody please tell me what is going on with Atticus Pund's face?  It's like he never blinks or something.   There is a weirdness to his eyes.  Is that what this actor normally looks like or did something happen to Pund in the concentration camp and that's why he looks like that?

  2. I'm confused where we are in posting about this show, but last night I watched a DVR'ed  episode which featured Scola, Tiffany, and a friend of hers who was an ex-cop, who she set up as an undercover to get info about a murderous drug lord who was his cousin.  And the only thing I can really say about this episode is with a friend like Tiffany, you don't need any enemies.

It seems that this season is really doing a number on the Team.  Tiffany has always been portrayed as an street smart agent who has a good head on her shoulders.  No more, I guess.

  3. I have to agree with Annber03 and TVbitch.   And yeah, what a weird story all ways around.

That poor woman got herself mixed up with a real "winner" in that Marcus.  150% agree that if a man's son is warning that his own father is mad, bad, and dangerous to know, I'd be running in the other direction.   And for all of the guy's so-called "charisma" and "charm" , it sure as hell didn't translate through the tv.   Ugh.   I'm glad that the judge had him locked up; just wish it could have been for longer.

  4. I like this show and liked how Haywood saved the day.  I didn't like how they are now dragging her family issues into the show (I want a cop show that is crime of the week without all the personal drama angst).  And I would've have never guessed that the Priest and Chief Suarez were brothers.  I mean really?   Ok, so there are families where siblings can look very different but you'd think they'd get an actor with a bit more of a resemblance to Jimmy Smits.   Seeing the ethnic makeup of so many New York priests,  I was thinking the Priest was maybe Pilipino.  Ah, the world of TV - "shrugs".

  5. I called it about Collins less than half way through the episode.   They were talking so much about the perps always having a jump ahead of the FBI, so I thought, "betcha it's Collins".

I wonder if they are going to wait for the season break to pick up this story line again.  Thank God there wasn't any of Deeks & Kensi acting like idiots about their teenage adopted daughter.   And I adore Sam's father - it really seems as if it's the older actors who really make this show watchable.

  6. This was an ok episode.   It is going to get old with the "will they/won't they" scenario.  It's been done a thousand times and eventually they almost always "will".

I do not like the quirky cousin.  I guess that they need somebody to replace Rupert, but why her?   Her clothing is SO out of date as to be laughable.   She looks as if she's dressed from 1850; and even if she's supposed to be a bumpkin from some rural village, she probably wouldn't be dressed quite like that.

And speaking of clothing, the store owner's wife looked so obviously fake pregnant.   It just seemed to me that the "bump" was so too down, or did it just look that way because of the dress?   When we first saw the lady, I thought, "is she having quads or what?".    Back at that time period, it probably would have been very unusual for a lady of means to be even seen in public that pregnant.   But I quibble....  overall a good show and I'm glad it's back.

  7. I'm liking the show though some parts of it were annoying (the Manhattan detectives for one).   I also like the actress paying Haywood as she seems to bring a realistic world weariness to the role.     At least this isn't another Dick Wolf production so I'll keep watching.

My husband is a heavy equipment mechanic.  The other day he was working on a machine and some antifreeze splashed up and landed on his lip.  He licked it as a reflex and said it tasted god-awful!  Very much a strong chemical, acidic, bitter flavor.  He said he had to use several glasses of water and some mouthwash and a few mints to get rid of the taste. Definitely not sweet like Dateline and ID Channel have described it.  I think the manufacturers have began to put in additives to make it smell/ taste bad because to many murderers and potential murderers have tried mixing antifreeze with soda, tea, alcohol.

Animals would also lap up antifreeze (and it would kill them).  I think that was also a reason that the stuff has been made to be unpalatable.

And no doubt in my mind that Brent killed his wife.  Unfortunately, I think that his daughters were brainwashed against their mother.  The older one is very much a Daddy's girl.  Maybe Brent hid the crazy better in front of the kids, and was all "Look at your Mother!  She's totally nuts!".  Let me say that I come from an ahem, "interesting" background where my parents waged a 40 year war against each other  (staying married) and my sister and I got put in the middle a lot.   I wish those kids luck - and the money to pay for a good therapist, because they're going to need it.

And sad to say, if it weren't for the victim's very deep pocketed and persistent parents, Brent would have gotten away with murder.  Seems as if there are a lot of lazy cops and half-assed autopsy folks out there.  Makes you wonder how many other people get away with murder.  You just have to hope that there will be justice done in one way or the other in the end.

  9. Stacy would have been better off using a sperm bank for sure - she would've also had one less mouth to feed (her husband).   And God only knows what abuse Bob heaped on her even before the murder.

Whenever I watch a Dateline or 48 Hours like this I really wish that schools would actually teach young people about domestic abuse and the signs of what to look for and that it can happen to people of all economic backgrounds.   There should also be more public resources made to people trying to get out of an abusive relationship.  Unfortunately, the victim is usually in the worst danger when they decide to leave.

  10. I personally don't think that Helen was in on the plot to kill their mother.  Remember that something was said about Meghan's 8 year old daughter living in the house and that Meghan told the cops that she and her daughter had left the house to go somewhere before her mother and sister were killed.   Maybe Meghan had told Helen that she would kill both her AND the daughter if Helen called the police.   And as far as the comments during the show as to why didn't Helen barricade herself or try and escape, maybe Helen had no escape route.    There didn't look to be a window in the bathroom and chances are that Meghan had her cornered with the rifle pointed at her.    Meghan shot Helen in the head - to me it looks almost like an execution.    I don't think that Helen stood a chance.   The jurors made the right decision in this case.  I'd just like some more background on that family's history because unless the murder is a total psychopath something like this doesn't happen out of nowhere.

  11. Yes, Mamie McCoy is beautiful; I had seen her being interviewed about her part on this show and she had her own hair and looked so much better.  The blond actress is very good-looking as well - even that ugly circa 1975 hairdo can't hide that.

Ah British cop shows - where they take beautiful actresses and fugly them down, unlike US shows which glam up everybody to the nth degree.

  12. Why is it that it seems every lead cop on these British PBS police show is "tortured"?  There always seems to be a tragic backstory of some kind.  I think that one of the things enjoyable about Midsommer Murders is that the top cops (the Barnebys) were happily married with no personal drama.

Also must say, that the hair on the women cops in this show is absolutely terrible.  The blond woman has a hair style that I haven't seen on anybody since 1982 and the dark haired cop's hair just plain looks bad (and doesn't really suit her).  I'm thinking that both actresses are wearing wigs but this looks like another production that spends $200 an episode on wardrobe and hair (for the entire cast).

  13. Hopefully I won't get mod slapped for saying this, but for the last 2 months I got to enjoy watching movies on TCM (and subjecting my SO to them)  and now because  turnabout is fair play, I'm back to watching shows like FBI because my SO enjoys watching them.   And after watching so many really good movies (and a few duds too), it's almost grating to see how a show like this has so much bad acting and cliched scripts.

So OA (who always looks as if he has the same acting coach as Mariska Hargitay - especially with his facial expressions), goes against orders yet again and does something really stupid and survives to tell the tale (love the jumping out of a car -  which was probably supposed to be doing 100 miles an hour - and barely getting a scratch on him).    And more Jubal drama with the kid (what happened to the other kid he was supposed to have?) and ex-wife (and what happened to her new-husband or boyfriend or whatever he was - the one she moved to Westchester to be with?).     Yeah, it's the kid's birthday and there is a mad bomber on the loose (and this guy is after the right-wingers, and where was he from - Portland?) and all of a sudden Jubal is told to go out and get boots on the ground and a 15 year old boy gets kidnapped.....   Boy, I wish that I could get paid for writing this stuff!

And what is the deal with how bad so much of the cast looked?  The lighting seemed off and even the makeup looked visible (maybe do to the bad lighting).  I also agree with those above who commented on OA's appearance.  He looks gaunt and older.  Again, may be the lighting/makeup (which when done well, hides A LOT).

I was thinking her defense would be self-defense (even though she went to start trouble) but it sounds like it’ll be Colin (or a dude he hired) did it.

I also want her sister prosecuted for either accessory after the fact or interfering with an investigation if she knew about the passport and/or gave it to her.

I'm sure that her family thinks that butter doesn't melt in her mouth and maybe she had already put it in their heads that "Colin did it".    But hey!  What says "I'm innocent!" like selling your car 12 hours after the police interviewed you, grabbing your yoga mat, and using your sister's passport to skip the country.  Not to mention the hair dye and assumed name.

I absolutely hated Kaitlyn's lawyer - just want to smush his face in my cats' litter box.  But yeah, he seems really sure of himself and Kaitlyn is a very attractive young woman and the lawyer is going to make the jury hate the cheatin' boyfriend's guts by the end of the trial.  My guess is that he's going to say that Kaitlyn was being framed and we'll just have to see what reason he's going to use to convince the jury that Colin (or his hitman) did it.

To me, I keep going back to Occum's Razor:  the guilty party seems pretty obvious to me but all you have to do is convince one person on that jury that Kaitlyn didn't do it and the lawyer earns his fee.

If Bonnie was a man wanting sex on the first date and then shouting at the women when he was turned down telling her how good in bed he was -- followed by staking behavior.  We'd be outraged.

I think they're too influenced by things like pretty locales (Hotel Portofino) and anything where the cast wears vintage costumes.

Jumping up and yelling YES!!! to the first paragraph.    And I totally hate how they have women from 1950s England and make them have attitudes and behavior of today.  They've also written Bonnie as immature and also (if you are going back to "past times") as a woman who illustrates why there was an "ooh-la-la" factor attached to divorcees and widowers - they were no longer virgins so they would be "easy".

As far as what PBS buys, they are looking for what they feel will attract the viewers who will make donations.  Program a lot of really high brow fare and the viewership will drop.   People have so much stress in their lives and they want escapism and something "pretty" to watch on the tube.   PBS viewers might not want to watch "Love Island" (too trashy), but "Hotel Portofino" can give them the pretty and yet not be too sordid.

If the ratings (and pledge donations) weren't there, the shows wouldn't be bought or dropped after one season.

  16. "Unfortunately, it sounds like Will’s happiness is short-lived. According to a description from PBS, the vicar’s “world will be rocked by a terrible accident” in season 8. Though Will has always believed in a compassionate God, his faith is tested as despair leads him on a dangerous downward spiral.

Meanwhile, Geordie and Cathy (Kacey Ainsworth) are moving forward as a couple after spending most of season 7 separated. But their happiness is threatened when both are confronted with shocking announcements at work. "

the above was copied and pasted from the first online teaser I saw for Season 8.  My guess is that the "terrible accident" will involve Geordie & Kathy's children as well as possibly Ernie and/or Bonnie

According to this research article, the five  year survival rate for cervix uteri cancer was 59% in 1959, for corpus uteri cancer it was 71% (we don't know which she has).

I understand that she's overwhelmed but saying that she doesn't want any treatment at all makes as little sense as blaming God for reneging on their deal.

Think about how rough cancer treatment is in 2022 and think about what it must have been like in 1959.   You go through hell, lose your hair, throw up constantly, and back then, your survival chances could be dicey.   Mrs. C is not a young woman and she has lost her faith.  I can easily see how she could decide to just throw in the towel rather than fight.

It has got to be the jazz.  Sydney started his slow descent into annoyingness and horndogness as he listened to more and more jazz and now Will is following Sydney into a sad descent into the same annoyingness and horndogness.  So that must be it (I kid, I kid...).

In movies from the 1930s (especially the early 30s "pre-code" movies) when they wanted to show someone (usually a woman) who is on the moral slide to Hell, they ALWAYS had the person listening to Jazz - either by playing records or dancing provocatively in a "Hot" Jazz club.   Nothing screamed "BAD GIRL" like a beautiful woman listening to Jazz.

I really liked Will at the beginning of his run too. Now I am debating whether to finish the series.

Aww, we've got 2 more episodes to go - you've come this far - don't jump ship yet.

As of what I could find online yesterday, Grantchester hasn't (yet) gotten a green light for another season.  This might be the end for Will and his horndog antics.   I'm still Team Leonard and Geordie! (and Dickens)

Tessa Peake-Jones did a very good job with the role but if I were Mrs. C's husband, I would be reluctant to trust her again. (I may be influenced by the fact that as a cancer survivor myself, I thought that she handled it all badly.)

I know that this show seems to love portraying the late 50s as if it's the 2000s, but I'm old enough to remember when cancer was not talked about, and even the word itself was almost like a curse word.  John Wayne would always call it "The Big C" when he discussed it and many times when people passed away from it, it was not mentioned in death notices.

My aunt passed away from throat cancer around 1965 and I remember the hesitation in mentioning "that" disease.  It seemed the feeling was saying the word brought it upon you.

  21. Had we been told before that Kathy was pregnant when she and Geordie married?  Is it going to be revealed that she and he felt pressured into getting married because of that?

I keep feeling like we have this theme here: Mrs. C got pregnant as a young teen and had an abortion.  Kathy got pregnant and Geordie married her.  Then we see the next week sneak peek and Maya is looking very agitated while speaking to Will.

And what is it with this show that every young woman (and not so young sometimes) woman that Will encounters wants to jump his bones?   Ok, Bonnie is a young widow who is probably missing physical affection but why such directness?  Again, this is supposed to be the 1950s - and some people worried about their "reputation".  I guess that Bonnie can take care of herself but yeah, if a man was pushy to a woman about wanting to go to bed with her, we'd all be going "yecch" and it doesn't seem nicer when the situation is flipped.

If you saw the original recipe Professor T, the Belgian version, you would not think as highly of Baker's UK version. It was crap compared to the Belgian original series. Just my two cents!

Not familiar with the Belgian Professor T but the British version was nothing to write home about, so I'll take your word.  If the same guy writes Hotel Portofino/Professor T/ and Before We Die,  he has mastered having a career as a real "hack" writer.  These shows  live or die on the ability of the actors to transcend the material as the writing is unoriginal and not really very interesting.   Somebody at PBS must feel that these shows are very popular with American viewers in that they keep showing them.   I guess if NCIS or The Blacklist had everybody speaking with British accents, the PBS execs would think of those shows on par with Shakespeare or something.

I think inserting Will into a mature, healthy, happy and functional relationship will be the death of the show.

Geordie & Kathy will get back together.  Sylvia & Jack will get through her medical crisis.  Leonard will continue to low-key hang with Daniel while finding his place in the community.  But Will can't go down that path.

I like Bonnie just fine, but I can't see Will "evolving" into a faithful partner anytime soon.  And shoehorning him in that spot would ring very false to me.

I don't think that we've ever seen Will cheating on anybody or being unfaithful - if anything his issue has been looking for love in all the wrong places.  He's not a bad person at his core - maybe emotionally damaged but I think that as viewers we are going to see that all he needs is the love of a good, AVAILABLE woman to put him on the right path.   And maybe the show's plan (if it continues to exist) is to pair Will with Bonnie and then put him more in the background and show us more Leonard and Geordie working together and make it more about crime solving and less about the local Pastor and his sordid love life.  Unless they marry off Will and send him and Bonnie packing off to somewhere else and bring in yet another damaged young hunky minister to go through the cycle all over again.

  24. The end of Season 1.  Lucian and Rose buckle to parental pressure and get engaged (and as the old saying goes, there is many a slip betwixt the cup and the lip).  I'd wish for something original here like maybe L & R finding that a few differences in life are ok (like she doesn't have to adore painting and be an extension of HIM), and actually coming to love each other, but this show seems to be aimed at either teenagers who are weird enough to like costume dramas or fans of daytime soap operas - in other words it's going to be formulaic.

Personally, I'd much rather see that handsome Count end up with Bella and not her daughter.  I hate the older man/beautiful young woman story (even though it's so common in real life) and the thing about giving her such an expensive gift without there even being a relationship first reeks to me of "buying" a woman or proffering such gifts to an "adventuress"  (a polite term for a woman who climbed the social ladder by becoming mistress to wealthy, well-connected men).  It just seemed so wrong and almost gauche in a way.  No proper young woman would have accepted a gift like that from a man she barely knew, no matter what the man's age was.

And of course, Connie is going to be the one who all the young men are going to have their eyes on.   Again, just the way this kind of thing is written: plucky young unwed mother working as a governess/maid catches the eye of all and sundry.  She will rise above her "past" and capture the heart of the young heir (won't be anything to inherit by the time dear old Dad is through) but there will be so many problems along the way.... For one, I don't  that Italian maid is going to go so quietly...  and of course there is the Lady Bitch Face (ok, so she may have a thing with Cecil but why be so gung-ho on marrying her daughter off to Lucian.  There would be plenty of suitors for Rose - many of them with lots of money of their own).

We have not seen the last of the American gangster (because I think thats what he really is). Cecil had better watch his ass once that guy is back in town.   And speaking of Cecil, he and the Mayor seem to now have an "understanding" - as Cecil said,  "From one dog to another".    To me, that was the highlight of this episode.
