  1. You don’t have to be a home owner but you do need to have the income to support the person immigrating. If you don’t, then you get a sponsor to meet the income requirements (there is a chart that tells you how much you need to make based on the size of your family). Leah will be on the hook for 10 years! No way I would sponsor some random guy!
  2. Everything you said about the fees is true. I think Pedro is not the sharpest tool in the shed so he would be lost reading the forms. The citizenship not is complicated and he could do it himself but the forms to petition his mother and sister, he wouldn’t be able to. I did all my paperwork myself for my own green card too and saved a lot of money ( it only cost my $550 back then) but I have friends quoted 5k by lawyers for their paperwork. One thing that the lawyer said that is not true is that Chantal needed be present for the interview. When I applied for mine which was also marriage based, my husband was not present. I drove by myself and had the interview alone. But I had all the required proof that I was married in good faith (still am!) Funny thing about my interview is I was 36weeks pregnant at the time and the officer was super worried that I could go into labor there. Apparently, he had that happened to him before. Thankfully, that was not the case and I made it home safely. Unless things have changed, I think that was sprinkled there to create more drama.
  3. US citizens can petition for parents, children under 21 & spouses and it doesn’t take as long as petitioning for a sister. That usually would take a good 10 years this applies to the DR and most countries.
  4. Long time reader, first time poster. I wanted to give an idea of the rent in the DR as I see it is a hot topic. I'm Dominican but have been living States for about 16yrs. My parents and siblings still live there so I have an idea of what rent can cost. Like in everywhere else, rent varies depending where you live. Base on the footage I've seen about Family Pedro apartment, I would guess that the rent for the apartment is anywhere between 10k-15k Dominican pesos. FYI, one Dollar is about $50 Dominican pesos so if the apartment is 10k a month that is only $200dls. The apartment itself is nothing fancy and appears to be in a low income area. The Dollar can go a long way in the DR, housing and food are definitely way cheaper than in the US.
  5. You have to be a lawyer to be a notary public in the DR. They are starting to move away from that but it is the way it is right now. I am not trying to defend Mother Pedro but just because you are a lawyer in the DR doesn't mean you are automatically going to make a lot of money. Sometimes you need to have the right connections or the right last name to get a decent paying job. I know lawyers who live very modestly ( in apts like the one Mother Pedro lives which is actually nothing fancy in the DR and seems to be in a low middle class area). If I had to guess by the way she speaks Spanish, I would say she has some education but most likely didn't finish law school. She speaks putting "s" where they don't belong. I can see she tries to speak correctly but still has some slip ups. On the other hand, sister Nicole has a better vocabulary and expresses herself correctly when speaking to the camera. I definitely think there is some manufactured drama.
