Sunday will be the first Mother's Day without my mom....we'll be going to the cemetery.

Soon it will be six months since she left us, yet it feels like yesterday.

It will be my first without my mother in law. I knew her 25 years since I was 14. She was always my “second mother”. My own mother is out of town. My mother in law passed away during a routine heart procedure 4 weeks ago. We knew she was in heart failure caused by diabetes but never expected her to pass away so quickly- she was 65. My kids and all of us have been a wreck.  My 11 year old son was diagnosed with a rare heart condition 2 years ago and has had multiple surgeries. She was always such a champion for him. We coincidentally had multiple cardiologists appointments this week and I’ve been a blubbering mess. My sons appointment today was nothing but great news but still…

My mother in law insisted on taking 15 of us to Disney last Christmas as her dying wish. We thought she was crazy. She was no where near the end. But alas. Her 7 grandchildren would spend the night with her weekly, talk to her on the phone, send her funny memes. She lived 2 miles from us. The 14 of us will get together Sunday and go to her favorite Mexican restaurant and then visit her grave :(

  2. Just to touch on the Disney stories- my grandparents took me when I was a kid in the 90’s. I went with my marching band in 2000. We took our two kids when they were out of stroller age in 2016 (my daughter had just been born and I didn’t want to deal with a stroller so she stayed home with Grandparents. I’m not generally a huge fan of lines or fast rides or heat or the amount of planning Disney takes. My mother in law was diagnosed two years ago with heart failure and it was her dying wish to take the family to Disney. We never thought she was dying. She was 65. So this past Christmas she paid for all 15 of us to go to Disney. It was my daughter’s first time as well as a few others. We had a lovely time and she passed away 3 weeks ago. Unexpectedly. Which leads me to… technology.

Two days after she passed away my 14 year old son was ambushed at school. I work at the school but was home on bereavement planning her funeral. Some kids lured him into the classroom and this other kid beat the snot out of him. I honestly can’t believe my son didn’t fight back but Grandma was his favorite person in the world (slept over there twice a week, talked every day) some kid set up their phone to record the whole thing before he even got in the classroom. Three weeks later and kids at school are still getting sent the video. I could press charges but I know the kid involved, he’s got a crappy home life and I just don’t know how much that would help him. He used to be friends with my son but things turned sour. He has spent the night at my house and we’ve had him over for parties, etc. my son was sent home on concussion protocol and the other kid was expelled. But it bothers me that this video is still being sent around. I hate raising kids in this age of technology.

  3. Great episode!

Echo everyone’s sentiments here but one line that also made me laugh was at the very beginning when the ghosts are sitting around the couch and Stephanie comes in they say something about leaving them alone because they were doing adult things like “planning a dinosaur wedding”.

  4. As a hockey mom I have no interest in basketball. As a mom whose state recently legalized sports betting I’m suddenly into a lot of sports I wasn’t into before. Also as a mom whose entire family went to NC State I was all in on last nights game and ended up winning $1,000! I am traveling to Texas this weekend for my Aunts funeral. My uncle is an NC State alumni and is planning a huge watch party. Go Pack!

  5. I’m just now discovering this show and this episode resonated with me in regards to Henry.
Glad I didn’t watch this when it first aired as we had just discovered my 10 year old had a congenital heart defect and were going through cardiology appointments and multiple surgeries at the time.
In season two or previously in this season (I’ve been bingeing) the officers were giving blood and Nathan’s character mentioned his son had TOF so I just knew it was going to come up again.
I thought most of the dr. Scenes were pretty good. Ok. But yes, Henry should have been seeing a cardiologist at least once a year. My son is almost 12 now and we are almost a year out from his most recent surgery. We see cardiology twice a year and I take his blood pressure several times a week.
Just please don’t tell me this story line ends up going south. My mama heart might not be able to watch.
TOF usually results in open heart surgery at birth if discovered at birth which is not what my son has. And we were only presented with the option of a temporary fix because his condition is so rare. They could never do open heart to fix his condition.
Sorry for the late response and mini diatribe but I do really like this show and am glad a friend introduced me to it.

  6. The K-12 Charter school I work at doesn’t even have a library. Only books in the classroom. I teach Kindergarten so my kids aren’t completely reading all the way yet. My 2nd grader is allowed to take books home from her classroom as are my middle school kids. I thought it was so weird when they built this new school in 2020 with no library or cafeteria. The kids eat lunch in the classroom or grades 5-12 eat lunch outside if the weather is nice.

  7. I haven’t worked a full week since November and I rarely get sick. If I do it’s mild and I can work through it. December we went to Disney and I came home with a sinus infection. January I tested positive for Covid. Today- stomach bug and Covid symptoms all over again. I have not been cough or tissue free since December. I work in an elementary school with my own kids being in 2,6 and 8 grade. Normally I don’t catch everything but it’s been awful!

Currently, I'm not sure whether to put the over/under for games coached by Carolina Head Coach Dave Canales at 13 or 21

All I know is it will be another season of cringeworthy games and I won’t have to waste my money on a ticket.

The Panthers fired the GM of a 2-15 team, and replaced him with the Assistant GM of the same 2-15 team.

As a Panthers fan who has been to several games, sports a vanity license plate, sticker on my car, yard flags, etc.. I’ve given up. We have slowly emerged as a hockey family now. My two boys play roller hockey and are obsessed.

The Hurricanes don’t let me down nearly as much as the Panthers. In fact the last game the Panthers lost I promptly went out and removed my vanity license plate and replaced it with a Hurricanes one.

Panthers stadium is a day trip for me but Hurricanes require an overnight stay. Haven’t bought a Panthers ticket in over two years. This will be our 2nd year seeing the Hurricanes.

    Tepper needs to go!

When I was in middle school me and a friend used to jokingly call LL Cool J LL Uncool L.  I think we used to just think he tried to hard back in the day.....

I was in middle school in the 90’s and as a white girl growing up in a predominantly African American neighborhood and school system rap was my music of choice. I had the biggest crush on LL Cool J. This was about the time Doin’ It came out and through MTV was able to catch some of his “older” hits. I still love LL. My husband thinks he looks like he should play a Ninja Turtle though.

  11. One of the fantasy leagues I’m in involves my cousins who live in Dallas. I lost this year but I’m secretly loving this since from September- December all I hear about is Dallas.

  12. Yea. Not liking this shill at all. I have three kids. My oldest is 14 and he’s the only one that “regularly” takes melatonin to go to bed. And that’s after I make him try for at least an hour with a book in bed and no screen time. My younger two (11, and 7) rarely ask for help getting to sleep but I’ll give them a small dose if they’ve tried for a few hours. We also keep on a regular schedule including bedtime at the same time every night. Dinner at the same time, wake up for school at the same time. Schedules people!!!!!!!!! They know nothing about that!
My 11 year old, as I’ve mentioned before has a rare Congenital Heart Defect that didn’t get diagnosed until he was 10. He has had 2 heart surgeries so I’m a little anal about what I give him to help sleep and his daily routine.

    edit to add:

with Layla saying she is tired after dance class… my heart kid was always complaining about his legs hurting or being tired after doing something and I never thought anything of it. I always brought him for his yearly checkups and it wasn’t until he turned 10 that we went in for a check up and he had sky high blood pressure. We went through kidney specialists, CT scans, echos, blood work, etc until we figured out it was his heart. There was never a murmur or anything.

  13. Unseasonably warm here as well but I personally hate snow on Christmas. Too many family members trying to drive and navigate roads in snowy weather. Give me snow anytime of year but Christmas Day. July is even ok.

Christmas 2020 we had a massive snowfall Christmas Eve. Sort of unexpected. We had our annual party with my mother in law and my family made it home ok but the rest ended up parking at their neighborhood entrances hoofing it home in pj’s with small kids.

Yea. Not looking forward to Sunday. I’m in one fantasy league with all my cousins who live in Dallas and bleed stars out of their asses so the group shit talk has already begun. I have no doubt BOA stadium will be full of Cowboys fans as most of us have given up on the Panthers. I also have no doubt the Cowboys will smother the Panthers.

My MIL of course wants us all over at 1 on Sunday to help her get Christmas decorations up and while part of me is irritated that she planned it for football Sunday the other part is fine I won’t have to watch the shit show )though I’m sure I will find a way to turn the game on at her house.

  15. I’ve always loved having a real tree so it stings a little to go artificial this year. I went with a flocked tree. My mom hates the idea of fake snow on a tree but I live in the mountains so I think it works. If I could afford an aluminum tree with a color wheel I’d be all about it!

  16. I have three kids. My youngest is seven so well past the age of throwing ornaments. I never had to do anything special with my tree when they were babies. I taught them to leave the tree alone and they did 🤷‍♀️.I even have a massive Christmas Village setup and maybe a piece got broken from a kid playing with it but it only happened one time.  I think the worst tree offender in my house was the dog or cat drinking the water out of the stand but a spray bottle came in handy when ever that happened.
This will be the first year in 10 years we have not gotten a real tree. Our local friend and tree farmer said he had a limited supply this year so I bought a fake one on clearance at the end of last year. I will so miss the tradition of hiking through the mountains and watching my boys saw the tree down :( We will actually be out of town for a week at the beginning of December so a fake tree works better rather than having someone come water it for us.
Anyhow, some Christmas decorations will be up before Thanksgiving (it takes a week to get it all up)but the tree and outside is always done the day after Thanksgiving and if it was up to me it would come down Christmas Day after the presents are opened but I digress. December 26th it is.
I’ve yet to see my tree assembled or out of the box so I’m anxious to get it up but it can still wait until after Thanksgiving. My daughter keeps wanting me to listen to Christmas music and I’m just not ready yet….

  17. I gave up on Hallmark Christmas movies a few years ago but will watch Biltmore Christmas. Got tons of media around here when it was being made and it has a time travel element which I’m always a sucker for.
For those old people like me if you remember the Richy Rich series of movies (McCaully Caulkin- Home Alone fame) those were filmed at the Biltmore as well.

  18. I own about 10 winter jackets but not the designer kind Hallmark movie people wear. It gets cold where I live and I am gifted a winter jacket almost every year and hang on to things so I digress.
A few years ago I had my first real Hallmark movie Christmas experience. I took my three kids to the local Christmas tree lighting complete with decorated gazebo, Mr. And Mrs. Clause strolling the sidewalk, roasted chestnuts, Christmas Carolers, Hot Chocolate etc. it was certainly magical but this was also located in Biltmore Village (in other words at the “free” part of the Biltmore experience in Asheville).

  19. The only soft spot I have for Austin is his sisters tragic death. I go to Chimney Rock once a year with my own kids and there is a fence around the area where I presume his sister fell. I live in the area and am very picky about where I take my kids hiking partly because of his story and witnessing a lot of unsafe situations on these mountains mostly due to little parent supervision. Just the other week a hiker fell to her death on the parkway.
The last time I actually hiked Chimney Rock my kids were little. The elevator was down and we climbed the 499 steps to get to the top. My daughter was an infant so I had her strapped to me. After we were done we climbed down and I put her in her stroller and a rock slide occurred. I went to take the older ones to the bathroom while a family member stayed with her. Heard a terrible rumbling sound and ran out to see a boulder headed her way. My family member abandoned her dog and saved my kiddo.
I love where I live but it’s not a place to be taken lightly either.

  20. I’m mooching off my brothers cable right now and have no way to fast forward or pause. I usually catch this on Hulu the next day but decided to watch live despite all of the above.

I thought the episode moved much better this week for the 90 minute format. Was sad to see J&V eliminated this week but was glad to see Yeremi and Liam go on. I have a soft spot for their brother story and find it amusing because my oldest son is named Jeremy Liam and his younger brother is close in age. I could see them doing the race together once they grow out of these pesky pre teen, teenage years.

My boys love to fish but they know I’m of no help to them when it comes to taking a fish off the line. My 11 year old handles them much better than the 14 year old though. I’d be squealing too if I had to touch those eels. .

    Hurrah Jordan Martinook 🏒

Funny you chat with your brother during the game. I do too except last night was much too late for us. I hope they do well ton.

That’s so cool you chat with your brother too! He got me really into watching hockey last year. My boys have played inline hockey with a local league for years though. Last Christmas my brother treated all of us and our parents (8 people) to third row seats to a game. It was awesome!

I love the #CauseChaos hashtag this season!!!!

My nephew texted me “Good. They’re undefeated.” 😂

I’m just glad to have a Carolina team worth pulling for. My Panthers are letting me down spectacularly and I’m not much into college football.

These west coast games are going to kill me though. I stayed up until almost 2 this morning watching last nights game texting with my brother. Can’t do that during the week. It was a great game ending in a shoot out and we are still undefeated!

  23. I don’t mean to derail the whole momentum of this conversation but I’m having a hard time focusing on the episodes this season. I’ve still only made it part way through last weeks episode several times before switching to something else. I do love the triplet baby song that Steve Martin does. I also found it funny that in the opener Mabel doesn’t think (Short) should be released from the hospital after five days and a stent placement. Girl, these hospitals get you in and out. My son has had two stent surgeries for his heart this past year at a top children’s hospital. Fall risk wrist bands included and we stay one night and I have to request a damn wheelchair and wheel him out myself. He’s 11 but still…. Alright off to finish this episode before tomorrow.
