Did I miss the part where Clark was trying to keep Lois's pregnancy a secret?  I didn't see any reason why he wouldn't buy the test locally.

I know a lot of people who keep pregnancy a secret, lest anything happen.  Especially since Clark and Lois are in their early to mid 40s, that's why I thought he said "how is this even possible".  So it turns out that Lois is just sick or has some other condition, and now he has to explain to someone that she wasn't pregnant after all.  To me, it's kind of awkward.

I'm so confused. I thought last season with Jordan and Sarah being together. Whatever

I get this is a family drama show. We're going to get things outside of superhero action. I like that. However, you need to give me storylines that I should care about. Kyle and Christy? No, I don't care. Give them something to do. The show is really making me wonder why Kyle is still as a main character past season 1.

I'm confused too, as I thought Jordan and Sarah ended up being together last season.  However, these two blow like the wind, and I've decided I don't care.  I really still can't stand whiny Jordan.  Always whining.  Whining about being with Sarah, not being with Sarah, wanting to be with her but she doesn't want to be with him.  And if he's not whining about Sarah, he's whining about his powers and being told what to do and what not to do by Clark.  Enough already.  Also, I would love to make this kid buzz his hair.  The Frodo Baggins look is so 2003.

I can't stand Chrissy either.  Why is she still on the show?  Last season I remember wishing that Ally, Lucy and Chrissy all disappeared.  Well, two of them are at least gone for now.  Why is Chrissy still here?  She is completely extraneous and irritating.  Have her get a job in Gotham City and Lois and Clark can run the paper.  Putting Kyle with Chrissy is just lazy.  It's obvious that Lana and Kyle don't really want to divorce, and I am so not looking forward to this season long love triangle.

In a small town like Smallville, why would Clark be buying a pregnancy test from the local convenient store where anyone can see him and the clerk will gossip?  1) She was already at the doctor's office, the doctor's office could run a test and they wouldn't need a Clear Blue Easy.  2) Why not buy one in Kuala Lumpur or anywhere in the world where nobody knows Clark Kent?

I like the new Jonathan, he does seem to have some of the mannerisms and behaviour of the old Jonathan.  I'm a bit confused as to why only he is getting his driver's license and not Jordan too.  I get that Jordan can fly, but not in public.

Who TF is Henry Miller?  Is this a character from last season that we are supposed to remember?  If so, I honestly have zero recollection about who this is.

  3. I enjoyed the case about the stolen items.  And especially the scene of that elephant slime, that was cool.

Thoroughly did not enjoy the B plot with Kenny Sparks.  Poor Whistler.  I would have had zero tolerance for that guy.  I hope he doesn't become a recurring character, he is irritating beyond belief.

I liked Boom Boom and Bam Bam together and I liked how they acknowledged that they purposely mess with Kai.  Wondering if we will get a third member of their team with a huge posterior that they call Bum Bum.

Episode 05, Season 16 MURDOCH RIDES EASY October 10 2022

I enjoyed this episode. It's always nice when Murdoch's scientific side helps solve a case.  And Higgins was competent and even helpful.

It's just like Julia to want to get a motorcycle - I'll bet Murdoch gets one too and they have lots of adventures on the "hogs".

It struck me as strange that Murdoch would allow competitors of Drummond to have acccess to his drawings and data - even though it turned out Drummond was a fake and had stolen from Harley-Davidson, Murdoch didn't know that at the time.

Episode 05, Season 16 MURDOCH RIDES EASY

I too enjoyed the episode - good to see the family portions, including Baby's first dead body.

I agree with the oddness of Murdoch allowing Harley & Davidson access but too be fair when he did it, he was just trying to figure out what had gone wrong mechanically, knew he was in over his head and had two experts showing up unexpectedly.

Plus he didn't know about any of the investor/stolen ideas intrigue at that point.  In the past, I think he has gotten experts/historical figures involved when he probably shouldn't have.  This time it quickly became an issue because of the "investor" raising a ruckus.

Good to see Higgins being helpful and Mrs. Hart providing a major piece of information.  Julia and her interest in motorcycles was fun and it was interesting to watch William's reactions going back and forth while he was realizing he probably couldn't stop her even if he wanted to.

I thought this was a good episode overall, but I'm a bit unclear on the dead body being the partner instead of Drummond.  Were all of the friends in on it too?  Surely they knew that Drummond was alive and passing off the dead body as himself instead of the partner.  What did I miss?

I thought Harley and Davidson were from Wisconsin.  Was there explanation as to why they were in Toronto?  Was it just to check out Drummond's motorcycle?  Is there any historical basis for them being in Toronto, or was it just so we could get a bunch of call outs to terms like "easy rider" and "hells angel"?

This seems to be an issue whenever actual historical people are on the show, it's unlikely the show is going to make them the murderer, so the suspect pool is reduced.  I didn't like the actor who played Davidson, something about his acting seemed off.

Julia looked great (and very modern) in the leather getup at the end.

I feel totally the opposite.  Ashley Graham had no understanding of what he was saying and was pretty ignorant of these actors and the show.

Here are some exchanges I witnessed.

Hugh Grant:  It's a vanity fair.
Ashley:  Right, where you're really going to let loose after!

    (LOL.)

Pedro Pascal:  I'm really excited to see Rihanna perform.
    Ashley:  She's not performing.
    Pedro:  She's not?
Ashley:  I mean, it'd be a nice surprise!

(Surprise?  Has she ever watched the Oscars?)

I agree, she was awful.  She really has no business being at the Oscars, let alone being one of the hosts of the pre-show.  Why was she chosen?  The cynic in me says that she was picked because she is a plus-size model and "representation".  Or why couldn't someone have been feeding her questions in an earpiece?

There is a much larger "in memoriam" gallery available at Oscars.org. It's obviously impossible to capture everyone that passed away in a 3-ish minute segment but it felt like this year's focused REALLY heavily on behind the scenes talent.

    https://aframe.oscars.org/news/in-memoriam

I personally don't care who they showcase on the broadcast, I just want people to stop clapping. 😡

After looking at the complete list, I feel like they could have cut out the Disney and Warner Brothers commercials to include more people (only listing the ones that we haven't already talked about):

    • Pat Carroll (voice of Ursula, I mean, they had an actual Little Mermaid  remake commercial!)
    • Coolio ("Gangsters Paradise" is still a very popular song)
    • Clarence Gilyard Jr. ("Die Hard")
    • Gilbert Gottfried (Iago)
    • Philip Baker Hall (a "that guy")
    • Estelle Harris (Mrs. Potato Head)
    • Sacheen Littlefeather (Brando)
    • Tony Sirico (Sopranos but other stuff too)
    • Fred Ward (a "that guy")

Yeah, there's quite a number there. Paul Sorvino stands out the most. He was an integral part of the mob movie era of Hollywood. Anne Heche was not there as well.

There was also some discussion about how Charlbi Dean was left off as well. She's most likely not an Academy member, but she was the lead star of a BP nominee (Triangle of Sadness), so maybe there should be some consideration for that.

Also Tom Sizemore and Topol, both of whom recently died.  Tom Sizemore should have been included.  "Saving Private Ryan", "Blackhawk Down", "Pearl Harbor".  They can't use the excuse that "he died recently and it was too late to include him" because they've included recent deaths before.

The way the whole segment was done was terrible.  Why fuzz out one half of the screen and then have it come into focus and then fuzz out the previously in-focus half?  Terrible.  If the Academy didn't think they rated their own screen then just put both on at the same time.

The singer should never be the focus.  When Ray Liotta's picture came up (and he also rated actual screen clip on the right side of his screen), the camera was on Lenny Kravitz with the TV screen in the background, and I couldn't tell at first that it was him.   At other points, the camera went to Lenny Kravitz when there were no pictures being seen.  Why?  Why not have given us more people instead of wasting those seconds on him?

Also, I get why they had John Travolta introduce it, so he could cry over ONJ, but honestly, I feel like he is seemingly asked to present at the Oscars every single year.  I for one would like a break from him.  It's like those years when there was a Gwyneth Paltrow overload, she was seemingly asked to present almost every year.

  7. I didn't really care for the case of the week, it was very predictable.  It was predictable that the waitress' kid would be involved, it was predictable that Harry would hack and expose the hate group, it was predictable that Mel and Robyn would save the day.

Once one of the bad guys determined that all of the people were behind that door, I'm not sure why he just didn't open fire through the door.  Instead he conveniently waits for Mel to throw his friend from the balcony.

I did like Harry dooring the video guy that thought he got away.

I was more interested in the Delilah custody issue.  I loved that Aunt Vi openly threatened Miles that she would release the information that he saved a terrorist.  I liked what she said to Miles about how she is the backstop and is always watching and that Dee is just as much her child.

I'm glad they explained away the fact that a judge would listen to Dee's opinion by her saying her friend had to do it and it was awful, so she was refusing.

  8. I'm excited for this!  The description makes it sound like a traditional spy show, but the trailer with Kiefer saying "I can't tell what's real and what's not" and the weird music makes it sound like "Inception".  I hope he isn't going to hallucinate a lot of stuff.  I'd prefer a straight up spy story.  But honestly, what I really want is more "24"!

Agreed.  Every song of hers is this boring sappy ballad.  That song she had this year was truly boring.  I'm disappointed that one of the catchy boy band songs from "Turning Red" couldn't have been nominated instead.

Amazing moment in Michelle Yeoh's hometown. Mama Yeoh was there and jubilant!

Who knew there was a fight between Malaysia and Hong Kong in claiming MY as their own? It was nice of MY to acknowledge both in her speech last night.

She's ethnically Chinese, but born and raised in Malaysia.  She moved to Hong Kong and got her start in action films, which is where she learned Cantonese.  If I recall correctly, I believe that when she filmed "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", she didn't speak Mandarin.  She had to speak all her lines phonetically.

She was clutching hands with Jamie Lee Curtis when the winner for Best Picture was being announced.  I found out that the small old white man that they were clutching hands over appears to be her longtime partner, Jean Todt, some kind of French auto racing executive.  Did she acknowledge him in her acceptance speech?  I don't think she did, did she?

And the playing off of certain team award winners and not others. I wish each member of each team would at least get the opportunity to say SOMETHING, even if it is just "Thanks Mom!" But I also put some of the blame on the first member of the team who hogs the mic for 45+ seconds knowing their colleagues won't have the same opportunity. 😒

Really surprised that so many BP nominees went away completely empty-handed and was bummed for some of my personal faves (Cate, Colin) but I was still thrilled for Michelle and Brendan.

    Well done, Academy. 👍

I don't mind that at all.  I think each award should get the same 45 second limit.  If there are four winners, then they have to decide how to allot the time.  I can't remember the exact details, but I seem to recall in last year's ceremony, there was a guy in one of the lesser awards who just droned on and on and the other person didn't get to talk at all.  Too bad.

This year, the guy who won with two women, he hogged all the time, the first woman stepped up and started to speak and she got played off, she raised her hand to try and get them to let her speak.  Too bad.  She should blame her partner for hogging all the time.  I saw people in the chat last night saying it was rude to not allow the women to speak... my response would have been that if it was important for a woman winner to speak, then they should have let her go first.

I'm really disappointed that Banshees got nothing.  I liked it way better than EEAAO and I wish it would have at least won screenplay.  Especially since the Daniels were clearly winning Best Director.  I also think it should have won Best Score.  Was the score for "All Quiet on the Western Front" really that good?  Because the snippet they kept playing when it won, that droning sound, just didn't sound good.

The pacing was much better than previous years. Host bits were kept to a minimum, and didn't go on for too long. Also, pairing up the Actor and Actress wins together helped with the pacing as well, as they didn't have to cut to commercials, although it makes the first announced win less impactful, at least to the viewers, because the presenters have to jump right back in to announcing the next winner, without leaving time to the audience to digest the previous winner.

I think the pacing picked up in the second half, because the first hour was all filler and only 5 awards.  The Little Mermaid commercial and the Warner Brothers commercial were just useless.

They needed to pair up Jessica and Halle for Actress/Actor because of Slappy Smith, so it made sense to pair up Ariana DeBose and Troy Kotsur for the Supporting categories.  I did think maybe they could have found a Best Actor to pair with Jessica, but I liked the choice of Halle because of the wonderful hug with Michelle Yeoh.

It really depends on what narrative can sustain the entire season. There's always the overdue narrative, like Glenn Close, Amy Adams, etc. But there's also the first ever narrative - like Ariana Debose last year. It's all about what can sustain through the Oscars voting.

I mean Michelle Williams is now nominated for five Oscars and no one is thinking she's way overdue for one! Meanwhile, Michelle Yeoh has been in the industry for 40+ years, never been nominated before, and somehow she's overdue. Sometimes there's just no logic to these things.

I really think SAG tipped it to Jaimie. Had the timing of the precursors been different, I think Angela would have won it. They both have the overdue narrative, Jamie just had the momentum coming in to the voting.

I would say both Michelle Williams (5 nominations since 2006) and Amy Adams (6 nominations since 2006) are overdue.  However, age is obviously a factor.  They're still in their 40s.  They might be overdue, but they aren't as overdue as Glenn Close or Michelle Pfeiffer or Angela Bassett or Sigourney Weaver.  They have more nominations than Pfeiffer, Bassett, or Weaver, but I would still put the elder ladies on "more overdue" status than them.

I liked what Michelle Yeoh said about her winning the Oscar as an "older lady".  She is 60 years old.  In all the years of Oscar, only Katharine Hepburn, Geraldine Page, Jessica Tandy, Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep, Frances McDormand, and now Michelle Yeoh have won Best Actress at age 60 or older.  The average age of the Best Actor winner seems to be significantly older than the average age of the Best Actress winner.

The correlation was that the last time an actor won Best Actor without their film being nominated for Best Picture was 2009. So statistically, that seemed to work against Brendan's favor but obviously not as he still won.

A perfect example of this - Ma Rainey's Black Bottom was not nominated for Best Picture, which is what Chadwick Boseman was nominated for but The Father, which Anthony Hopkins was nominated for, was.

I definitely think SAG taking place as late as it did this year significantly swung the momentum in all the Acting categories, save for Supporting Actor, which was long sewn up. And I admit I was one of those that definitely underestimated that - underestimated that with SAG taking place literally two or three days before Oscar voting began, that it would significantly impact the votes.

I hated Angela Bassett's losing only because some of the smug pundits who kept going on about, "they're not giving an Oscar for a Marvel film" will feel like they were right. My friend though made an excellent point about that take. Admittedly she loves her Marvel universe but her thoughts were that it's funny how there's such a dismissive disdain by some about Marvel films and yet so many were falling backwards over themselves over a film that included fight/action sequences, multi-universes and basically people being a hero and love conquering all. Sounds awfully familiar.

As she put it, "but I guess that's suddenly considered high brow filmmaking as long as the Marvel tag is not attached." I of course said to her, "well to be fair, they had the dildos too and sausage fingers. So there is that."

Another good example is the 2018 ceremony.  Glenn Close was considered the leading contender for Best Actress for "The Wife".  She won the Golden Globe (Drama) and the SAG.  Olivia Colman ("The Favourite") won the Golden Globe (Comedy) and the BAFTA.  Many people said that the SAG is the best indicator and thus some were saying Close would win.  However, Close was the only nomination for "The Wife".  Meanwhile, "The Favourite" was the tied for the most nominations of the year, with 10, including Picture, Director, Actress, 2 Supporting Actress, and Original Screenplay.  Some were saying in advance that Close wouldn't win because her film was not popular and was not widely seen.  Colman won.

I still feel very disappointed for Angela Bassett.  Here's an article which shows her reaction and some reactions to her reaction:

    https://www.huffpost.com/entry/angela-bassett-oscar-loss_n_640e7b31e4b0bc5cb64b3acb

As I've said, I like Jamie Lee, but if there was going to be an award for Supporting Actress from EEAAO, it should have been Stephanie Hsu, who was amazing.  Jamie Lee's character was just sullen and dry.  At the start of award season, I don't think she was even mentioned much, her role didn't seem to be award worthy.  Angela Bassett's Queen Ramonda was the emotional heart and soul of "Wakanda Forever".  Her speeches were stirring, her defiance was strong, her

    Spoiler

    death was tragic.

I did like that Ariana seemed very excited and pleased for Jamie Lee.  Even if that meant we were cheated of a perfect opportunity for Ariana and Angela to do side by side "did the thing" dances.  I can see that Jamie Lee is saying "SHUT UP!" in surprise when she hears her name.  But can anyone make out what Kerry Condon is saying?  It looks like to me she says "wow" in resignation.  Is that what she is saying?  I love the reaction and glee of Stephanie for Jamie Lee.  Hong Chau looks gracious too, although she probably knew that of the five nominees, she was the one that had zero chance of winning.

I have to believe that Jamie Lee Curtis only won because of sentiment.  Her name and her famous parents and her Hollywood legacy.  Mira Sorvino, Gwyneth Paltrow, Laura Dern.  All must have benefitted from having beloved actor parents.

It's interesting to me, because sentiment and/or a feeling that he or she is "due" often doesn't seem to be enough.  Gloria Stuart, Lauren Bacall, Glenn Close.

While some would say that Jamie Lee Curtis was "due", on the whole, her career doesn't seem to include a lot of Oscar-worthy performances, unlike Angela Bassett.

I hope that Angela Bassett will get another chance soon to win and show that she "did the thing".  As well as others who are long overdue, like Glenn Close and most of all, national treasure Michelle Pfeiffer.

Yes.  Or sometimes maybe a performer does it on purpose to get attention, like Cher the year she got snubbed for Best Actress for “Mask”, was asked to present and had Bob Mackie design a “screw you” dress for her to wear to the ceremony.

  16. I’m so happy for Michelle Yeoh.  Amazing that she is only the second non-white Best Actress in Oscar history.   I do realise that there are quite a number of actresses who are claimed to be Asian (Vivian Leigh, supposedly part Indian) and those of descent from the continent of Asia (Cher, Armenian and Natalie Portman, Israel).  But Yeoh is the first winner who actually looks Asian.   I loved her speech.

No chemistry between them at all. The chemistry between Cruise and McGillis in the original was much hotter.

I’ve always kind of resented Jennifer Connelly for her Oscar win.  Both Dame Helen and Dame Maggie in “Gosford Park” were far superior to her that year. But she benefitted from them presumably splitting the vote.

And I agree about her Top Gun Maverick character.  Completely extraneous and boring.  I much would have rather seen Kelly McGillis brought back.  But I guess they thought she was too old and out of shape?  Shame.
